(ThyBlackMan.com) As I watched the Republican debate on October 10, I thought about Kanye West and the comments he made after Hurricane Katrina decimated New Orleans. He said, “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people”. Later he tiptoed away from the comment by saying he “regretted” it, but he never apologized.
Five years later, in 2010, Bush gave the Today Show’s Matt Lauer an interview. Bush stated that West’s remarks were an “all-time low” in his Presidency. He went on to say, “I didn’t appreciate it then, and I don’t appreciate it now…I resent it.” He then said that West’s comments were “one of the most disgusting moments” of his Presidency.
Let’s see. Former President Bush took us into Iran, and we’re still there. His actions were partly the cause of the Great Recession. He was widely described as less than intelligent and, in fact, a doofus. But remarks from Kanye West were “one of the most disgusting moments” of his presidency? These remarks suggest that George W. Bush has as little judgment as he was often accused of. Consider Iraq— New Orleans— and a tax code that favored the wealthy. Yet Kanye West’s remarks were an “all-time low?”
Why does this Kanye West kerfuffle remind me of the last Republican debate? Ben Carson is the only person on stage that used the work “Black,” and he said it in connection to increasing the minimum wage, which he opposes. None of the others uttered a peep about African American people, not in terms of entrepreneurship, the wealth gap, nor discrimination in the workplace. It’s fair to say that none of the moderators asked about race and the economy. But just as the candidates jumped into the conversation when they wanted to, none jumped in after Carson’s remark (a perfect opening).
Kanye West said, “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people.” One might say the same thing for the eight major Republican candidates who stood on stage and ignored Black people. Republicans keep saying they want to reach out to people of color, but ignoring Black people suggests that they are thinking about us as much as George Bush did in 2005.
They did talk about immigration, or the Latino population (Trump isn’t trying to build a wall between the United Stated and Canada, but between the United States and Mexico). That part of the conversation was, in my opinion, impractical and disparaging. How is the United States going to expel millions of people and then allow them to come back? Each of the candidates talked about shrinking the size of government, but building a wall and deporting people would increase the federal payroll.
I’ve had about enough of Marco Rubio’s immigrant parents story. He could score a couple of points by adding comments about involuntary immigrants. Such a comment might suggest to African-Americans that they at least slightly get some of the race issues that plague our country, but those candidates ignore African Americans on one hand, and offer rhetoric about including African Americans on the other.
The moderators of this debate—Fox Business staff Neil Cavuto and Maria Bartiromo, along with the Wall Street Journal’s Gerard Baker did a great job in keeping things moving forward and imposing time limits (although many ignored the bell that Cavuto said would ring when time was up.) And then there’s the to-be-expected interrupting and crosstalk. There were far fewer personal attacks. The debate showed that none of the candidates had developed comprehensive policy positions. All that was missing for me was a question about race and the economy.
Race is a low priority for all of the candidates, Democratic and Republican, in the 2016 election. The Democrats will say some of the appropriate things because they have no choice but to recognize that African Americans are part of their base. The Republicans talk diversity, but they don’t practice it, and haven’t figured out how to weave a narrative about race into their conversations.
Kanye West said that George W. Bush “doesn’t care about Black people.” This group of candidates ignores Black people and behaves as if there are no consequences when they turn their backs on the ones they might woo later.

Hello, i’m not surprised that Black People are still behind in this nation. We live in a nation of Takers and they could careless about anyone else especially people of oposite race. They see us as cheap labor and now the Syrian Refugees suffer the same conditions. Well as soon as the Iranian Rial is reinstated and back in the banks, which should be shortly; i’ll be starting a privatly funded organization for African Americans in the US. Young Black Entrepreneurs of America (YBEA). If you are tired of the status-qou and are ready for a change for all american black people, send me an email and your ideas to become a Entreprineur. This organizations focus is to create many Black Entrepreneurs in America and to answer the call for assistance to the Syrian Refugees by providing 3D printed housing and Aquaponics systems to produce jobs and food. We will also take advantage of Irans invitation for African Americans to interrate into their financial oppurtunities. The Iranians haven’t forgotten us they understand and are fully aware of our struggle here in America. Let’s see how they can help us become successful as our nation HAS forgotten us. Really they’ve never acknowleged us as anything more that slaves, amimals, criminals, or just lazy and government feed. We must stop and destroy this madness. Success is the best revenge and I want nothing less than success for our people. Let’s change this broken nation and reach out to the world. We Will Not Be Forgotten!
The GOP does not ignore African Americans, the GOP says stop expecting handouts or someone to take care of you. They say get off your lazy butt and take care of business. And I agree. We should only give out food stamps for 1 year, gradually decreasing the amounts each quarter until people can take care of themselves. Nobody owes you anything.
As for “black” people,
What’s sad is that we African Americans are still calling ourselves BLACK because Caucasian oppressors called us that to contrast their color and to assign to us all the negative things BLACK is equated with in the dictionary. The fact is, like it or not and believe it or not, YOU ARE BROWN and your car tires are black. You can say black is a culture but when they deal with you, they deal with you based on it’s definition – dismal, gloomy, dark, diabolical, treacherous, devoid of light.
WAKE UP AFRICAN AMERICANS. We do not call the Asian yellow man because he would not stand for it. We do not call the Native American a red man because he would not stand for it. We do not call the Hispanic man a brown man because he would not stand for it. And many Africans, Haitians and Jamaicans do not accept being called a color they know they are NOT.
Ironically, African Americans are the only ethnic group/race on the planet which allows ourselves to be called a color we are not, allowing ourselves to be defined by color, by someone else and to allow ourselves to be attached to a color we are not – a color they filled with negative denotations. Then we fight to help keep the lie in place.
Is it any wonder that cops treat us as BLACK people by the definition of dismal, gloomy, treacherous, evil etc? We will never rise and overcome as a people if we allow other groups to define us, to define us with a lie and we are sadly willing to help them. AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVES MATTER PEOPLE. Black is the color of my car tires, not my skin. I am a family and relationship counselor who specializes in deprogramming African Americans from slavery mindsets.
I agree the GOP has no ideas for healthcare. But they do have ideas for immigration reform. I am no longer a Democrat because I do not need the white man to take care of me in disguise with government programs, big government and intrusions into our lives.
The democratic party supports every kind of deviant and immoral behavior I can name from the killing of unborn babies just because a “mother” wants to and homosexuality to transgender freaks. The democratic party has no value system, no morals and a whole bunch of hand outs to make you forget they have no spirituality.
