(ThyBlackMan.com) When the Fox Network released the new show, “Empire,” I was concerned about what I might see on screen. Fox is not known for producing the most favorable images of black people, so I figured this show wouldn’t be any different. For some reason, black dysfunctionality makes for great television, and there is a long line of white guys getting rich off of our willingness to celebrate all that makes us miserable.
If you do some research, you might notice some of the same things I’ve seen in this ghetto-fied hood drama: Pimps, hoes, thugs, gangsters, emasculated black men, and all kinds of other kinds of stereotypical coonery that many of us have grown tired of seeing portrayed on the TV screen. Lee Daniels is apparently the man responsible for this televised monstrosity, and I wonder if a day will ever come that the majority of us will refuse to support directors who pimp their people to help bigots like Rupert Murdoch get rich from modern day minstrel shows.
Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson are two of my favorite actors. They are incredibly talented and deserve every opportunity to make their money. But this is a show that I cannot support, because I have a secret dream of seeing the black community prosper, educate itself, build strong families, and become something more fitting of Dr. King’s grand vision. I can’t always describe what Dr. King and our ancestors wanted for our people, but I can certainly say that it wasn’t this.
I also have a few things to say about Lee Daniels and his admitting that he’d like to use the show to “blow the lid off of homophobia in the black community.” I’m not sure why black people are always the target of this kind of propaganda, especially when there are millions of white conservatives who have their own issues with homosexuality as well. Not to say that any of us should be forced into a position on gay rights or that we can even agree on what it means to be homophobic, but black people do not have a monopoly on homophobia, however it is defined.
Daniels’ efforts to use media as a tool to pathologize his own people might be an even greater reflection of the mental illness he is confronting as he works to cradle a deeply abused inner child. The same way that abuse victims often become abusers themselves, Daniels has decided to abuse all of us with media messages that are stomach-churning for any black person to absorb. The same way Michael Jordan spent 20 years pissing on the world because he was the dark-skinned kid who was cut from his 8th grade basketball team, Lee Daniels is using his newfound power to destroy black people rather than build them up.
The video below goes deeper into what I think about this show. I also reiterate that I won’t be watching. Actually, I don’t even watch network TV anymore, I’m a Netflix/Youtube/Amazon kind of guy.

I’m a pro-black revolutionary and the author is tripping. Stories like Lucious’ do exist in Hip-Hop. Sean Combs and Shawn Carter immediately pop into mind. Everything can’t be a history lesson or some Horatio Alger story. Get over it. I haven’t seen a stitch of cooning yet. Just powerful black people taking no crap from no one. This is America. No one gets rich without killing or stealing. No one.
Hollywood is doing what it always does, cashing in on what their target audience wants. In this case the hip hop/rap industry which has made millions on “gangsta” stereotypes. The season finale of Empire drew some 16.5 million viewers and according to Variety two thirds of that audience is African-American.
Whether anyone wants to recognize it or not, a lot of characters on television really do exist in real life. Yes, within the black community, there are actual murderers, con artists, and every other type of criminal. No one really watches a tv show and become what they see because it will mean that they are nuts anyway. Black have to realize that sometimes television is what it is: ENTERTAINMENT. Truth be told, if it wasn’t for so many blacks being hired to play these characters, the unemployment rate would be very much higher. Yet, I don’t see groups of black men giving jobs to the jobless.
Empire is the latest show in a long line of black coonery, minstrel show, glorification of thug life and homosexual culture garbage week minded Negroes love to see on TV. Blacks have Maury Povich, Bill Cunningham show, Hip-hop wives, Sorority Sistas, Scandal, but still we can’t get enough. So now it’s Empire, I don’t blame Fox for showing this mess, cause they know Negros will coming running to watch it.
Racist not resist…. darn autocorrect.
It’s easy to blame FOX for the train wreck that is Empire, yet we overlook the fact that Hollywood is run by white liberals. The Sony execs who made resist comments where longtime Democratic donors.
Brothers and sisters it’s time to stop giving white Democrats a pass, and start holding their asses accountable too. They are wolves in sheep’s clothing to the black community.

I work with deprogramming African-Americans from the slavery mindset. I appreciate all of the information you provide. Email me to get the very important article. It will amaze you, inform you, shock you and prepare you.
Your analysis of Empire is right on. Denzel never received his highest honor until he played a rogue cop which is ironic in light of Ferguson etc. Halle Berry never received her highest honor until she played a woman who lowered herself to sleep with the character played by Billy Bob Thornton. And now a 2015 version of New Jack City called Empire is getting a lot of attention. It seems the powers that be are dead set on emasculating African-American men by placing them in a dress (Tyler Perry, Martin, Jamie Foxx)or casting us as killers, hustlers and thugs. Our people really need to wake up before this next election. If not, we may wake up to slavery all over again.
@ Adam
The reason is because Black people didn’t create our problems. What you see are symptoms of the original problems. All that Tyler Perry is doing isn’t bad. He’s creating jobs and opportunities for a lot of people who wouldn’t normally get them.
Black Unity is the solution, 3ufirst.com is the plan.
Lee Daniels……..is PROBLEMATIC……I DID NOT like ‘Monster’s Ball’… I DID NOT like ‘Precious’……………I attempted to watch the 1st showing of ’empire’…….and I don’t like it either. It is obvious to me that media/movies/television have ulterior motives and intrinsic purposes in projecting very NEGATIVE images of my people….the progenitors of the real Afrakan Egyptians ( nubians, kemetians, bantu….people). This is disgusting and I will NOT cosign for this in ANY WAY………………
This is fantasy T.V show, I don’t get how this qualifies as “coonery”. Our race is basically being imaged onto a screen. We might see some ways in which the “gangsta rapper” son redeems himself. The show isn’t all that bad, its wierdos like you that want every show to be “The Cosby Show”, how ironic the star of the show is a rapist who settles payments OUTSIDE of court and says nothing of his innocence.
Although I’m far from the “Like gangsta rap because it expresses yourself” crowd to ignore anything except the “See blacks in an angel-like prehistoric imgage” is profoundly absurd
Futhermore you expose yourself as being a self hater by criticizing so many black character-led shows
Terrance Amen: What are your feelings on Tyler Perry, then? He portrays blacks in a horrible light with all of his movies and plays, yet he himself is a black man. Even so, black people support everything he does, most likely because he’s black. Why is it okay for another black person to portray us in a negative light, but wrong when a white person does it?
I’m with you on this Dr. Watkins. But until we create our own tv networks and movie studios, these negative shows will continue. We can create our own positive movies and shows, using the money we’re already spending.
Black Unity is the solution, 3ufirst.com is the plan.
Fox network in general has always been an enemy to black America. They will showcase and parade all kinds of self hating black monkeys like Jesse Lee Peterson, Larry Elder and any other sambo they can buy with a slice of watermelon.
