(ThyBlackMan.com) Once again Dr. Cornel West has gone out of his way to inflame headlines and relegate a complex issue to the waste bin of simplistic zealotry by calling President Obama a war criminal.
.
In his typical pseudo intellectual fashion, Cornel West continues to shout the obvious – that innocent people are being killed in war – in the most inflammatory tones as though he’s relating something new.
.
While most Americans are against the killing of innocent noncombatants, we also recognize that it invariably happens in every war. That’s one of many things that makes engaging in war such a horrible thing. But Cornel West is shouting from the rafters and going into public convulsions as though the first time it’s ever happened is under Barack Obama. Thus, I’d like to challenge Dr. West to name one war in the history of mankind where innocent noncombatants weren’t killed.
.
The problem with people like Tavis and West is they invariably shoot from the hip with inflammatory comments, and disseminate disinformation in order to garner headlines to promote their own selfish agendas. As a result, instead of enhancing public education and engagement, they distract from any serious discussion of the issues. .
Cornel West is not privy to even one sentence of the intelligence that President Obama has at his disposal. Yet, he’s shooting off his mouth as though the CIA is putting a condition report on his desk every morning for his review. We must never forget that Pakistan, right next door to Afghanistan – and where Osama Bin Laden was found and killed – is armed with nuclear weapons, and the president has a responsibility to see to it that those weapons never fall into the hands of Al Qaeda. If they do, America, and YOUR family, will fall under the dire threat of nuclear annihilation.
.
So while people like Tavis Smiley and Cornel West are jumping up and down in ignorance, and engaging in a recklessly selfish attempt to gain headlines and get the president’s acknowledgment, the President is engaged in serious business – America’s business. So they have to understand, just like irate children seeking attention, that the president doesn’t have time to come out and play, and regardless to how many tantrums they engage in, or how inflammatory they become, the president simply doesn’t have time to come sit in the sandbox with them.
.
Thus, adults understand that the issues aren’t as cut-n-dried as people like Tavis and West would have us believe. Yes, on the surface it seems like simple common sense that it’s wrong to kill an American citizen without due process – even if that citizen is collaborating with the enemy. But place yourself in the position of the president for a moment. Let’s say you have credible information that Al Qaeda is going to launch an attack on an American position on Tuesday morning, but you can prevent the attack by launching a preemptive drone attack on Al Qaeda’s position on Monday night. You have one problem, however. You also have intelligence that indicates there’s a collaborator on the enemy site who is an American citizen. Are you going to hold off your preemptive attack because the collaborator hasn’t been afforded due process? I don’t think so, any more than a police officer is going to wait on a court order to defend himself on the street.
.
And let us not forget that once a precedent has been set of holding off attacks in order to protect the lives of American collaborators, from that point on Al Qaeda can use that against us. All they have to do is surround themselves with American sympathizers as human shields to insure themselves against attack. So these issues aren’t as simple as they might seem at first blush. While, of course, we must be careful to protect the rights and security of innocent American citizens, jumping up and down screaming and pointing fingers is not the kind of approach that is appropriate for considering such weighty concerns.
.
But a Cornel West supporter recently called me to task for constantly challenging Dr. West’s intelligence. He asked, “Eric, who made you judge and jury to attribute intelligence or lack thereof, to any individual?”
.
That’s a reasonable question, so I’ll try to give a reasonable response. My assessment of a person’s intelligence is not based on their credentials, but on their behavior. And who am I to make such a judgment? I’m human, and human beings are called upon to make such judgments hundreds of times a day just to survive. It’s called assessing your environment. In this case, it’s extremely important for the Black community to assess Cornel West’s competence, because, considering his flagging, but still substantial influence, failing to understand his character, motivations, and shortcomings could have a devastating impact on our community.
.
The results of the 2000 election stands as a perfect example of my contention. George W. Bush won the 2000 election by winning Florida by 537 votes. In that same state, the Nader/West coalition peeled away 97,488 votes. So one could argue that West is more than a little responsible for the suffering that’s currently going on among Black people today. And you know what? West didn’t learn a thing. He tried to team up with Nader again in the last election. So either he lacks intelligence, or he’s engaged in collusion with the Republican Party. It’s very important, therefore, that the Black community make a valid assessment of who this man is.
.
As Min. Louis Farrakhan so adroitly pointed out to Tavis Smiley, President Obama is not turning grey-headed for nothing. He’s dealing with serious issues, and he’s privy to information in which we can only speculate. So it’s one thing to question policy, but when Cornel West goes around making incendiary comments, and calling the President of the United States a war criminal, it’s not only childish, irresponsible, unprofessional, and ignorant, but it lends support to the enemies of both the Black community, and the American people as a whole.

I just read a book by former SEAL Chuck Pharrer titled SEAL TARGET GERONIMIO that validates a comment Eric made about terroist groups having weapons of mass destruction. According to Mr. Pharrer, Al Queda has a large store of sarin gas that they USED in Afganistan against American troops. However, Al Queda didnt get their bang for the buck, so the media turned away from this story and it became more of an non issue. I think often of one of Dr. King’s favorite sermons, A Knock at Midnight. In it, Dr. King speaks of those who “clothe their hatred with love and call it love while all of the time hating.” Minister Farakkhan, in a round table discussion, warned Tavis Smiley and Cornell West of allowing their hatred of the POTUS to rise to homicidial proportions: How black people can have their hatred of other blacks manipulated by others that have ill will towards all of us. It’s time that we move on from worrying about what the POTUS will do for us and use the James Brown view of life: I dont want nobody to give me nuthin, open up the door, I can get it muself.”
Marcus,
The only way to avoid being a war criminal in this world is not to ever hold office. EVERY head of state who engages in ANY war is a war criminal, because EVERY war is a crime against humanity. Tell me one war in the history of mankind where innocent noncombatants were not killed. In WWII we blew up two ENTIRE Japanese cities, including men, women, children, newborn babies, pet kittens, and cuddly little puppies. That’s what makes war a bad thing – ALL WARS!
So the point is, why are you singling out THIS president? And why are you jumping up and down and having public convulsions without having any facts regarding why he’s doing what he’s doing? President Obama has the sole responsibility for protecting YOUR family against Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal that’s just a block away from where Al Qaeda is camped out. What would you do, try to convince them not to be naughty?
There’s simply no way of pleasing people like you and Cornel West, because you’re non-thinkers. If Al Qaeda got access to a nuclear and blew up the city of New York or Los Angeles you’d be asking, “What the hell was Obama doing?”
Thanks for those post @ mv and dg!
Just think about it. If it was Bush still in office and he had these foreign drone strikes that killed innocent brown folks, would you Black folks not be up in arms?
That is why my people are rife with hypocrisy when it comes to the president. If it is an injustice when a white person does it to our brown brothers overseas is it any less an injustice when it is a Black president that does it also?
Defend him if you want, but don’t excuse him when he is wrong. That is simply called accountability.
Good Lord. This isn’t a “war”. Obama (thankfully) abandoned Bush’s “war on terror” rhetoric so this isn’t even a war on terror. This is us bombing sometimes specific targets (whoever they happen to be surrounded by) but sometimes people in countries we aren’t at war with whose movements (ie congregating outdoors, sometimes for a party or a funeral) fit a “profile”. Obama is KILLING CHILDREN on the regular and we don’t really care about it because they are brown kids in foreign lands.
No doubt Obama is dealing with serious issues, heavy is the head that wears the crown I would hope. I’m actually gonna put his hair growing grey to the same reason that Bush’s and Clinton’s did; they were men going from the early to later middle-aged period of life with stressful jobs. But here’s the thing: if Obama (and Bush before him) were privy to some secret database that made them kill the people they did (never mind the fact that it’s fairly well established that Obama gave the go ahead to kill large clumps of people in strike zones without really establishing what they were up to) then you know what? Let’s still take their actions at face value. If someone commits what appear to be murders for some noble reason they can’t tell anyone about for God-knows-why, then kudos to them for making a noble sacrifice but they still gotta do the time or go public. And all of that is highly doubtful, considering that the administration is very keen on “leeking” things that make Obama seem good.
Hopefully the GOP has managed to relegate itself to the dustbin of history and we can find someone to challenge the Democrats without being beholden to the good old boys network that both parties have always been a part of.
Nothing but a bunch of toms sitting at the table defending the empty suit.
War is the nature of mankind. Cornel West got it made from his exalted perch as a Harvard tenured professor. This is an example of why it’ll be a very long time before black folks get out of its economic and social misery.
Cornell West and Tavis Smiley should be ashamed of themselves. I don’t understand why they are going above and beyond to disgrace President Obama. Soldiers have been in war since I’ve been alive and some have lived, some have died… are we happy about the great soldiers we have lost… absolutely not! My grandmother wasn’t happy when my uncle died in the war. So what is he talking about. I doon’t remember hearing from him when Bush was in office about the war or any other President for that matter. The truth be told America has been messed up since George Washington, Obama is not the root of the American problem…This man is the President of the United States which means he is not just for blacks but for everyone. Cornell what you are doing is teaching our people to continue to believe they are the victim. The government has never taken responiblity for anyone or anything and I must say President Obama, has some how made the people feel that he cares. Does he have all the answers… No! Has any of the Presidents had all the answers??? Again, there is a root to every problem, and it doesn’t start with President Obama. Peace and Love to all
My Brothers and Sisters… The Minister Is Correct!!
While the criticism of Mr. Obama and his Administration is warranted, this is all Mr. Obama’s critics appear to have done, is criticize. They have not suggested meaningful solutions to the high rate of black unemployment and nationwide poverty which stand a chance of being approved by the President and both houses of Congress. While criticism is fine, acceptable solutions are even better. Minister Farrakhan is right people; you have to organize around a plan. We need to see the world as it really is. The NAACP and Urban League are organizations that get face time with the President, along with people like Al Sharpton. They represent an era of the past, which they want to bring back, and that is big government grant programs with them sitting at the top in executive positions overseeing the dispensation of millions of dollars of grant monies. It will not happen with the House of Representatives in the Republican Party’s hands. If you seriously want to change things, let’s get these guys out of the middle man role and back a program that will put money directly in our hands and create jobs at the same time. What you desire and every black person if they could get it is to have risk capital put in our hands in a large enough amount to make a difference. Go to http://www.sslumpsum.com and look at what is possible if we start thinking like Willie Sutton. When asked why he robbed banks, Sutton said, “Because that’s where the money is.” Well, 2.7 trillion dollars (the size of the IOU owed by the federal government to the Social Security Trust Fund) which is the last great pool of money left in Washington D.C., does not sound like chump change to me and it is money over which we have some say so, without getting permission from anybody! The Trust Fund at the end of the day is our money too! If not the plan am proposing, than I suggest we have Mr. Obama or any of you put one on the table that stands a chance of Congressional approval. Power yields only to a superior or equal power. Who among you have ever witnessed power overcome a without a plan?
you did not provide any rebuttle to my stated facts, instead a few cheapshots and how i repeated some republican talking points. you are not interested in dealing in facts, or truth for that matter, like i said, i know you love obama, and he is the best president this country has ever had, i got it. but the fact remains you cant debate me on anything i had mentioned, because for you its an inconvenient truth.
that fact is, you are consumed with skin color and partisan b.s. because obama is pres, war is cool, so is wiretapping, and torture. admit it, you are a race pimping black supremacist.
“95%” is indicative of the lack of political sophistication in our community!
Hassan,
You seem to have all the Republican talking points down. But you haven’t said anything that I couldn’t get from Fox News, or any member of the Tea Party. But you’re transparent. All you’ve managed to do is demonstrate that you’re one of those brothers who would ben much more comfortable if President Obama was the White House butler instead of the president. There are a few of you still hanging over from the 18th Century. But the results of the last election clearly shows that over 95% of the Black community have got your number. But just chill, in a few more years you’re going to have another White man in office again. Then you’ll be able to relax, and you’ll “have your country back.”
I got news for you, he is a war criminal, has broken and continues to break every promise he ran on. You fail to bring up; NDAA, Fast and Furious, and NO NEW TAXES OF ANY SORT FOR ANYONE MAKING LESS THAN 250K. Oh, wait he still is not done, how about that transparency, yeah, he is so transparent he used executive privilege to cover up the Fast and Furious fiasco. Getting rid of the small business council, and giving healthcare waivers to those corporations that supported him in his campaign. The head of the National Black Business Association stated publicly that “the man (Obama) is dangerous for black business in this country”. Ford from the Black Agenda Report stated that he is not the lesser of two evils but the most effective one. In case you are not aware of it, we support Al Qaeda openly. Just like we did with the overthrow of Kaddafi, and openly supported Al Qaeda rebels that were slaughtering black Libyans by the thousands, but again its ok because Mr. President is tending to serious “American Business”
You are enamored with his skin pigmentation, nothing more. You have the depth and political sophistication of a mud puddle. If this was any conservative white president you would be screaming MURDER! Of the innocent victims from the drone strikes, but it’s all good because YOUR BOY is the one doing it. I would bet you anything you have the president’s picture up all over your home, probably with candles and rosary beads.
Personally, I think you, and those like you are a danger to the black community. Because anytime a brother or sister decides to leave the plantation for a while and speak their mind you are quick to criticize, and put down for not following the “agenda”, next Cornel West will be accused of not being black enough. What you probably fail to understand now government and officials from both republican and democratic parties have supported illegal wars, wiretapping, and in the past have shown to be involved in false flag attacks against their own people. Personally, I don’t see this president stepping down anytime soon; he has shown to be a great globalist player and has far exceeded my expectations. I foresee the nukes you mentioned being here already and some useful idiots with mental problems being handled by one of our alphabet agencies on how to build the device and detonate it, so martial law can be declared and what was ever left of the constitution will be shredded as you cheer for it and your own demise.
