(ThyBlackMan.com) The problem with having a deadline at the end of the week, is that you miss the opportunity to weigh in on things, such as an election, that happens on a Tuesday. It is almost torture when you consider the possibilities face us on November 7 and beyond. I am hoping that President Obama can pull it off, but I am cognizant of the numbers that suggest that Willard is nipping at his heels. No matter what happens, there are real issues that must be faced not only in the next few weeks, but also in the next few years.
The unemployment rate report that was released last Friday was good news for President Obama. The unemployment rate ticked up just a tiny bit, from 7.8 to 7.9 percent. It stayed below the magic number of 8 percent, which is a boost for the president. Behind the good news, though, there are issues of concern. For example the African American unemployment rate rose significantly from 13.4 to 14.3 percent. Black women took most of the hit, with unemployment rates rising from 10.9 to 12.4 percent. Meanwhile, Black male unemployment dropped from 14.2 to 14.1 percent.
There’s more. More than 5 million people have been officially unemployed for more than half a year. They have been looking for work for an average of 41 weeks. I cannot imagine the pain and misery that is reflected in such a long job search. One wonders how many of these folks have left the labor market because they have become discouraged. At the same time, the data shows that more than 600,000 people returned to the labor force as a result of recent trends.
The most discouraging data comes from hidden unemployment and other measures of unemployment. The 7.8 percent overall rate of unemployment is reported as 14.6 percent. Thus, the Black unemployment rate of 14.3 percent translates to an overall Black unemployment rate of 26.4 percent. That means more than one in four African Americans is unemployed. In some urban areas, as many as half of the African American male population does not work.
When President Obama wins this election, African American activists, especially those who have access, must remind our president of this data. They must suggest that there is a coordinated and comprehensive response to the disproportionate exclusion of African Americans in our economy. In the unlikely scenario that Romney is elected, it will be a signal for African American people to figure out how to develop an economic model that does not depend on government (not a bad idea in any case). Then make the new administration understand that they are not only the leaders of conservatives, but also leaders of our entire nation.
When African Americans are marginalized in the labor market, the whole of our nation suffers. Any unused human capital is a drain on our economy and society. Whether Gov. Romney or President Obama is the victor on November 6, the brain drain that is a result of high unemployment rates will not be staunched until there is focused attention on Romney’s 47 percent. Investments in education are threatened by the Ryan budget, but following the Ryan budget is much like eating our seed corn instead of plating it for the next generation. The focus on education improvements in China and India are really a focus on the failure of our nation to fully invest in higher education, especially for those who are underrepresented.
Our nation’s situation is not simply about an election, but about a matter of direction. Too many of us think that voting is the most we can do, not the least we can do. Too many of us have eschewed the role of community agitator and activist. Way too many of us feel that professional success and community involvement are mutually exclusive. Too many of us fail to understand that our personal success germinates from community activity.
The unemployment rate data is a monthly reminder of the State of Black America. If we are unsatisfied with the facts, what will we do to change them?

There is now a link to what the President’s efforts have been concerning the African American community. It’s a PDF file so I’m not sure if they include dates as to when it was actually placed on the net. But this is before Obama’s re-election. I don’t know why it’s available at this point in time to see – it’s dated for November 2011. But I promise you this is the first time I’ve seen it and I searched under every topic about the President and African American community that I could possibly think of. I didn’t find it until I searched under Obama and African Americans poverty – I typed it all lower case…Not sure if it makes a difference. However, I took a look at everything that he outlined. I think we all should take a look and see if there is anything that we can do to continue to somehow be involved. I too was angry at the inaction that I felt the black community or African American community was experiencing….But just read the outline and tell me what you think.

The Obama administration lacks diversity. You guys are mere cry babies. Just go to the inauguration and continue to spread hate instead of love in the community.

Thank you so very much for posting that video. This was an eye opener for me, in terms of government jobs, of which we thought were good and unbiased jobs. Maybe I was naïve in thinking that having a government job was a place that lacked discrimination. Based on this video, boy was I wrong. Also the fact that even with a degree, it still doesn’t mean you will get the job you are qualified for. If this video isn’t an example of why we should start our own businesses and reprogram our people to start supporting them, I don’t know what is. Let’s make 2013 the year of solutions rather then problems for our people. For more information on the solution, click on my name.
Black Unity means financial independence and happiness
The Coalition For Change, Inc. (C4C) recently introduced a video entitled: DISCRIMINATION IN EMPLOYMENT: STILL A REALITY DESPITE EDUCATIONAL GAINS. The video highlights the disparity in employment between black and white individuals. It documents that despite educational attainment at varying levels during the “Obama era of government,”,African-Americans have the highest unemployment rate of any ethnic group. It further depicts that our largest employer, the Federal Government, is one of the biggest discriminating entities failing to enforce equity and fairness in the workplace. The video details such points as follows:
• Black unemployment has been twice rate of whites for past 60 Years.
• Over 150 “RACE” (Black)-based employment class actions were filed against federal agencies (e.g. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Social Security Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Marshal Service) over the last ten years.
• In the past decade, the number of black workers with a college degree has increased by over a quarter, compared to a fifth among White workers.
• In the Federal sector minorities have lower pay grade even after controlling for education, experience and other advancement related factors.
The video also provides two examples which provide insight into the challenges African-Americans must face when seeking employment in a discriminatory climate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36rk4rCPK9A&sns=tw
When I see this statistic: 60% drop out rate for blacks, it is unacceptable and every individual has a personal responsibility!!! Nobody put a gun on the head of these young people to drop out!!! A lot of people have low expectations for themselves! I observed a lot of things. Most people unless they are retarded know about the importance of education but many are lazy and won’t make the effort. They prefer to make fast money regardless of the consequences! Well, there are no short cuts in life! I hear stupid statements such as reading is a feminine activity. I know a man who is doing his PhD. He thinks that perfection is a feminine thing, lol! He is in his forties and still refuses to admit that when you don’t make your 150% especially when you are Black which is his case, it won’t work. He wanted two years ago to surrender his PhD. As a friend, I gave him a tough love lecture and he decided to pursue his studies. But honestly, I don’t understand this lack of maturity. I am almost ten years younger than him! Yes, it is maybe not fair that we must work harder than others but it is the reality. Asians understand that and we don’t hear them complain. The Jews were not highly educated before the Holocaust but after that they said to themselves this can never happen to us again and they made sure as a group to get higher education. When are we going to learn??? Too many of our people think they can be mediocre like the mainstream. They are very naive and refuse to admit or realise that the system favors WASPs and not us. So, we don’t have the choice to make personal sacrifices. When I will see many Black people in book stores and libraries like they attend church, I will start to take my group much more seriously! Our people should read these books: Life is so good by George Dawson, Think Big by Dr. Ben Carson, the books of the three doctors (The Pact, The Bond, etc.), We’ve Come This Far By Faith by Dr. Darrell Pone and so on. Maybe it will give them the kick in the butt that they need! People who refuse to educate themselves are saying yes to poverty! Frederick Douglass understood this centuries ago. Because of his determination he was among the most prominent men in America during slavery time!!! I know people who missed at least one year of school (when they were kids) because of sickle cell anemia disease and managed to become engineers later in life. I could go on and on. We have nooooo excuse!
MeSo Tired:
Can you elaborate more about your statement regarding the wrong doings of Al Sharpton & NAACP?
Terrance,
I love the question that you are raising: My question is why do we keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result?
Einstein used to say that craziness was about doing the same thing over and over again even if it doesn’t work.
“We must learn to do for ourselves” – Well you can’t have it both ways! Either do for “ourselves” or keep looking for “entitlements”! Which is it going to be? If we don’t get handouts from the government, we complain. If we are treated like children waiting to be fed, we complain. President Obama is not interested in anything except for your vote! Why can’t black people see that? There was a time when we demanded to be treated like everyone else; now we want special treatment! Black folks, we are our own worst enemy! Wake the hell up!
Black Americans are not some monolithic population. 40% of African Americans can move through society with no problems, but the bottom 40% are a type of special needs student. Until programs recognize this and allow it to be talked about these poor kids are condemned to being a poor fit in an economy that does not need or want them.
Black people, wake up. The American dream has become an American nightmare for a lot people in our community. My question is why do we keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result? When are we going to look in the mirror and see that we are the problem now and we are also the solution. No one can do more for us than we can do for ourselves. From Marcus Garvey to the Nation of Islam, to the Reverend Leon Sullivan, they give us the real solution to our economic and the many other problems in our community. The solution is simple, not easy, but simple. It’s time to start doing for self. We can’t continue to rely on the same people who enslaved us for our livelihood.
If 1 million people invested $10.00 a month, thats $120 million dollars a year. Remember I said an investment. How many businesses can be created from this amount, which would continue to create all the jobs we need in our community. Even if you lost your 10.00 a month, at least it would have been for a good cause. We waste $10.00 a month on garbage that has no long term value. We continue to spend a trillion dollars in every community, but our own. When we stop doing this, we’ll solve the jobless problem in our community. If our so called leaders aren’t talking about this, then yes I do agree, we are being pimped.
Black Unity means financial independence and happpiness
I’ve decided to no longer fight for all Black people, especially those who feel no need to fight for themselves. I’m tired of exhausting my fingers by typing my disdain for both republican and democratic politicians (including Obama) who finds it the norm to ask for Black votes and ignore all things “black” once he or she gets the majority of the “black” vote.
I’ve come to realize that maybe it’s time for Blacks to separate into different subgroups: independent-thinking Blacks, who are willing to challenge any politician or social ill that plagues or ignores our particular groups’ interests; the other subgroup would consist of Blacks that don’t seem to care about themselves, their economic futures or their own children (i.e., people who actually like welfare over jobs; people who actually like to do drive-by shootings and sell drugs in our communities, and people who have given up all desires to think and fight for themselves, i.e., people who blindly follows Obama or any politician listed as a “democrat.”)
We are NOT all the same, and I will no longer waste my breathe or my time fighting for Black people who like to be ignored, humiliated, abused, taken advantage of and ignored by their beloved Democratic politicians and so-called Black symbols–Obama, Sharpton and NAACP.
My support and enduring love will continue to be for Black people like Tavis Smiley, Carnell West, Yvette Carnell, Boyce Watkins & Harry Belafonte.
I have no more respect for people who have gotten famous from being poverty pimps (Al Sharpton & NAACP) and turns around and accuses people like Smiley and West of the very same things that have kept them relevant to this day. I can’t stand hypocrisy!
All I’ll say to this article is good luck on getting the majority of Blacks who voted to re-elect Obama to care about Black unemployment. Having a Black President in the White House seems to keep their bellies from growling and it seems to keep their bills paid, although I don’t know how. Let these people fend for themselves going forward. Personally, I no longer care about any of Obama’s supporters. I only care about people that have continued to criticize and hold Obama, Democrats and Republicans, from the very start, accountable for ignoring Black issues.
You can’t vote to re-elect a president that has totally ignored and humiliated Blacks and expect for him to reward you with his respect and attention. Everyone knows that abuse victims get so used to being abused that they continue to seek out their abusers to allow it to continue, until their abusers finally puts a permanent end to them. In my opinion, Obama has successfully shown White America that Blacks are now relevant in politics. My of us (Blacks) have been successfully indoctrinated into the Democratic party, and they’ll tolerate any degradation or abuse that Democrats throw their way, while smiling the entire time.
Also, I’ve noticed that this article has continued to be re-posted again and again, because it hasn’t been attracting readers or supporters. I believe that many Blacks have spoken. It’s time to let those Blacks go. They are a waste of our valuable time and energy.
Blacks are still less in every regard.
We need jobs (19% unemployment rate fro blacks – 54% for young blacks men)
We need edcucation (60% drop out rate for blacks)
we need families (75% single mother rate for black kids)
We need all of these things much more then a black president to feel good about.
Ms. Malveaux:
There is something we all can do and that is relentlessly push for a job creation plan with our every utterance, at every opportunity. You, know, at the end of the day, this President is a politician. Once we all come to that realization, that he is not the 2nd coming of Christ or something to be ogled, but a politician ( a good one )maybe just maybe we will then start treating him like a politician – that includes but does not limit us to holding protest signs stating, “Mr. President – What about high black unemployment?,,, Or perhaps starting a e-mail campaign where we send a 1,000,000 e-mails to him and people in his immediate circle asking is he going to come up with a job creation plan? Once you remove the aura of fascination with a man of color occupying the office of President, you readily see a man whose Presidency’s when you crunch the numbers have in no way benefited the long term advancement of blacks. Let the truth be stated! Crunch housing foreclosure numbers… crunch the numbers regarding wealth and finally crunch the numbers regarding income. They are all downward for blacks. We need this President to step and present the nation with a Job Creation Plan and he should have done it yesterday! http://www.sslumpsum.com
