(ThyBlackMan.com) Depending upon your source for news, you may or may not have heard the story about Rachelle Grimmer, the 38-yr-old mother of two who shot her children and committed suicide after a seven-hour standoff with authorities in a Laredo, Texas welfare office. Both children have died because of the gun shot wounds they suffered. As tragic as the story is, it is curious that right wing commentators who often rail against “entitlement programs” are conspicuously silent. It is also tragic that Governor Rick Perry seems to be ignoring the story, which happened in his home state and has not as much as offered his condolences to the family of the victims.
After unsuccessfully applying for food stamps for her two children, Rachelle Grimmer decided that she would make a statement by killing herself and her two children. Details are murky about why she was not able to get the benefits for her children that she sought other than she did not provide proof of a Texas residence. Reportedly, Grimmer and the children were living in a camper in Laredo and denied food stamps for months. This sad case follows the sad story of a Mississippi mother sentenced to three years in prison for failing to reveal prior drug convictions on her food stamp application for her children while people involved in white-collar crimes of fraud involving millions of dollars are given a relative insignificant punishment.
It is no secret that most right wing pundits like to rail against public assistance going all the way back to the Reagan era when his campaign exaggerated reports of a Chicago woman, Linda Taylor, caught abusing the system in the seventies, thus creating the myth of thousands of Cadillac driving welfare queens that persist to this day. Usually when these pundits criticize public assistance, there is usually an ethnic component usually suggesting that the welfare abusers are found mostly in the black community. Even though the welfare system underwent a huge overall with time limits on assistance orchestrated by President Bill Clinton and current GOP nominee frontrunner and serial racialist Newt Gingrich who recently said poor black kids have no work ethic unless it involves illegal activities, conservatives still use the same arguments against the current system.
The fact that right-wingers are silent on a story, which would fit their narrative of people who feel a sense of entitlement to public funds, is conspicuous to say the least. Many of them seized upon the story of an attention seeking black rapper whose Youtube video “It’s Free Swipe Yo EBT” as proof that welfare fraud queens are rampant in the black community. However, when a white mother kills her children and herself because she was denied EBT benefits and wanted to make a statement, it seems they have nothing to say. We can only speculate as to why they are taking a pass on the story. Is it because Rachelle Grimmer is white and they do not want to alienate poor white potential voters who tend to buy into the harsh right-wing rhetoric targeting minority groups in America or is it because they do not want to acknowledge that the American people are suffering more than ever in a society where the wealth gap is the largest it has ever been? Whatever the reason, right-wing pundits and politicians are simply not talking about Rachelle Grimmer.

Eleanie says: “I think that goes beyond this right wing conversation that is going back and forth.”
Sure it goes beyond the left/right paradigm but at the end of the day, it is still a political issue since it involves government programs. I think it is legitimate to ask the question about why people who always have something negative to say about people needing assistance often injecting ethnic stereotypes, are not saying anything about this case. Is it because it does not fit the stereotypes they promote? I can only speculate as why their websites and blogs are devoid of this story when just a few weeks ago they were all talking the black rapper whose video was filled with negative stereotypes about black women. Since I am very interested in media propaganda, this is the angle I choose.
In my opinion,if there were no “welfare” programs in our country this mother & her children would still be alive today. She went to the wrong place for help, government does not care about citizens. The citizen is only here for the government to leech off of the productivty of the citizens. She should have turned to local churches & food banks for help.

“Of course there was also poverty but people were less likely to have children, that cost money and need food, as a result.”
Uh, no. Birth rates in the US are at an all time low since they have been recorded.

The difference between pre-“entitlement state” and after is that before you were not “entitled” to survive in health and human dignity if you or the adults on whom you financially depended made mistakes, budgeted poorly, were defrauded or otherwise stolen from, unexpectedly lost their job or income source, got injured or sick, one among the family unit got injured or sick, or any number of other accidental and random misfortunes.
No “entitlements” means that those kids were as good as dead before. The didn’t deserve food because their mother couldn’t provide for them. They aren’t entitled to anything.
Some other ‘entitlements’ to come out of the same time period as the others you oppose: Weekends, Overtime pay, Vacation- paid or otherwise, Workplace safety standards aka OSHA, Publicly-maintained roads and Child-labor laws. (This list is far from comprehensive.)
In addition, if I pay Social Security taxes my entire life, how is it an ‘entitlement’? You don’t need to explain the system to me, explain to me the hole in your logic large enough to drive a truck through. We pay for these programs. They are not entitlements, they are investments. Paying for them is part of being a productive member of society.
We don’t know why she killed herself and her children. I think that goes beyond this right wing conversation that is going back and forth. I think it goes beyond black and white. Obviously there were some serious mental issues here. I wonder how long she reached out for help and to whom. All I know is that three lives were taken and two of them were young, innocent children.
Also the system is very messed up. Yes there are hundreds of people black, white, naturally born citizens and immigrants that have a strong sense of entitlement. You also have people on the welfare rolls and food stamps that have worked the majority of their lives who are now in a bad place because of the econonmy. I know this from working in social services and the non-profit sector for the past 15 years.
It’s sad.
I think it is because she is white and because it involves guns. Children getting shot can lead to people wanting tougher gun control laws. I think race is as much a factor as that is.
Thank you for this piece!
There are reports coming out that the family is saying she was mentally ill. My question then is why did the family not do more to help her and those children? They were sleeping in a camper. Too late for the family to come forward now.
“maam your benefits are denied”
ok, ill just kill my kids?
You have got to be kidding me!
The crazy beotch should have sold the gun for food, brother.
natalie says: “Not sure what this has to do with the right wing…”
It has to do with the right wing media’s portrayal of blacks and welfare. – Scotty
natalie says: “Addtionally, I take issue with the assertiin that she killed her children “because” she was denied benefits.”
You can take issue all you like but that is the fact of the matter. Tell us then why you think she killed her children and herself in a welfare office that denied her foodstamps. – Scotty
People used to come to the US for opportunity BEFORE there was a welfare state. They didn’t come because of the welfare and it needed not to exist for there to be prosperity. Of course there was also poverty but people were less likely to have children, that cost money and need food, as a result.
Instead today there are people all over the US accustomed to handouts, waiting for someone to take care of them.
Maybe they aren’t all driving around in Cadillacs but they certainly aren’t being cautious about their lifestyle while the system supports them.
Here is one example of a woman in FL with 15 kids. YES 15 KIDS!

There are many bigoted rednecks that visit black news sites all the time.
Not sure what this has to do with the right wing…
Addtionally, I take issue with the assertiin that she killed her children “because” she was denied benefits.
@Cholly Obviously the article touched a nerve and the article is not so much about the issue of welfare and entitlement programs, it has to do with how right wingers like yourself are always trying to put a black face on welfare recipients when the total number of white folks far out number blacks on welfare. Here was a story that your people could have really put a spin on about people dependent on welfare or having such a strong sense of entitlement that to make a statement, this idiot shoots her children and herself. Try checking all the usual right wing website like HotAir, Bill O’Reilly’s website, etc and you will find no mention of Rachel Grimmer. I stand by words and your “baby mommna” comments on a black news site just serves to illustrate my point. Thank you for the assist.
Idiot writer, this has nothing to do with “right wing”, it is all about inefficient government. The more you widen the entitlement rolls, the more time is spent on bureaucracy and government workers who are clueless to discern who should and shouldn’t get help. It is a tragedy but the issue has nothing to do with expanding entitlement programs, it is to fix them so that folks with real problems get help and not your casual “baby mommna” folks with the shrill voices.
