(ThyBlackMan.com) As Professor Cornel West has gone around the nation critiquing the policies of President Obama, he has met with a firestorm like no other: Melissa Harris-Perry at Tulane University has gone after Professor West as if he were the man who who stole her first born child. Others around the nation have joined in,including Tom Joyner, who wrote off every Obama critic as a “hater” who needs to simply remain silent.
One of the interesting things about all the criticism being thrust at Professor West is that much of it presumes that Cornel is attacking President Obama for personal reasons. There are rumors that he is angry that he was never invited to the inauguration, or that he felt dismissed because the administration won’t return his phone calls. There is no end to the reasons that people are coming up with to explain why Professor West has done what he’s always done, which is to advocate for black, brown, poor and working class people. Cornel West, who does not hold a masters of education bur rather a doctorate in philosophy from Princeton, has not let his ivy league background detract from a mission for the the people and not the executive MBA on Wall Street.
These criticisms of West are peculiar and ironic for a couple of reasons. First, it dismisses the responsibility of those who are critical of the professor to come up with clear evidence to prove that West is wrong. After all, it’s hard to check the Whitehouse.gov website to find much evidence that the Obama Administration has done very much to end racial inequality or fight mass incarceration. Sure, there are other presidential priorities, but if the black vote matters for reelection, then black voters should not have to be enthusiastic about perpetuating the very systems that lead to their own suffering. Additionally, the administration’s decision to allow for large gaps of time between meetings with the Congressional Black Caucus also undermines their ability to prove that West is wrong.
Secondly, the criticism is interesting because one might be able to readily and easily argue that the accuser is as guilty as the accused for allowing personal biases to taint his/her perceptions of West and his remarks. While Professor Harris-Perry can readily cite the close interactions between Professor West and President Obama, she doesn’t mention that she herself worked down the hall from Professor West at Princeton University. When a person goes out of their way to strategically, systemically and obsessively target a colleague that they worked with every day for a number of years, one has to wonder what sour intentions lie behind the motivations of the attacker.
I would love to have been a fly on the wall to determine how Professor West might have intervened in the career path of Dr. Harris-Perry or earned the ire that she displays when she works night and day to invalidate him in every way that she can. In many ways, one has to wonder if her attacks on West are just as personal as she believe’s West’s attacks to be on President Obama. In fact, Harris-Perry’s relationship with West was much deeper, meaningful and complex than the relationship between Professor West and President Obama, and we all know that familiarity can certainly breed contempt.
What must be realized is that much of what happens in American politics is personal. I wouldn’t argue that Harris-Perry’s points are invalid solely because she might have a personal vendetta against West. I would rather see the African American community consider the evidence as it stands and make their own decision about whether or not the Obama Administration has enhanced their lives. If one can easily and logically argue that black folks are better off since 2008, then there is nothing to criticize. But if people of color are worse off than before, with no signs of improving, then there is little reason for working class black people to be excited about any president of any color.
Ultimately, the proof must be in the pudding, and the pundits shouldn’t be allowed to tell us how it tastes. Anyone who works to distract observers from the facts and consistently deviates from the issues is most likely working to deceive others into believing something that simply is not true. Also, as much as some would accuse Cornel West of attacking President Obama for personal reasons, we must remember that the critics, themselves are not immune from the sweet temptation of revenge.

West-Obama Narrative: Shows all Wrong with Black Academy and African Studies
http://rawdawgb.blogspot.com/2011/05/west-obama-narrative-shows-all-wrong.html
Wow! I’m really impressed with many of the comments here. There really is not much I can add in defense of the POTUS’ accomplishments. I do think, however, that the critiques of Dr. Harris-Perry are unfounded and that she should not be lumped in with the other PhDs currently in opposition to the President Obama.
Harris-Perry is married to James Perry. Mr. Perry is a foot soldier in the fight for Af-Ams, particularly here in New Orleans. She is his mate and advisor therefore her efforts to aid the Af-Am community are measurable. She is not just a talking head intellectual.
Regarding Dr. West, he may want to refrain from the name calling of President Obama (puppet, mascot, etc.). Although I respect his vast intellectual accomplishments, he comes off like a minstrel. He bows and grins like he’s about to do a cake walk in circa 1860. Stand up straight, for God’s sake. I know that was ugly. I’ll just have to ask my higher power to forgive me.
Thanks for the opportunity to share.
I haven’t read all the info related to this current black intellectual donnybrook. I did catch some of the discussion on Rev. Sharpton’s radio show today. I’ve also read the comments posted above.
That said, I don’t agree with everything the President’s done and hasn’t done, nor have I been happy with the final policies and pace of change that he’s delivered. But the record is clear that he’s been able to achieve a number of accomplishments! He’s made a positive difference in this country and in the way this country is viewed and treated globally. The list is long, and many have been mentioned above.
For any that are unhappy with the President’s lack of accomplishments, especially in the AA community, or his “backbone,” then support and vote for someone else. Either run yourself, or find and support another candidate. But don’t whine and complain because you need to feed your ego and sell your books on the back of the first Black President!
Bottom lime, Smiley and West both have books to sell. I could care less that they “held other President’s accountable” in the past – that’s BS! Of course they did! That’s how they sell their books and get and stay rich! To be fair, there is no doubt in my mind that these two men and others like them love Black people and would love to see us all do well, be treated fairly in and out of the courts, have a level playing field to achieve. They make a living focusing on this and TALKING about these issues. They love to TALK. They get paid to TALK. They could care less about the actual state of Black America or the President’s performance – but they do care about the dialogue. You want to TALK about it? Then they’re your go-to Black resources/”intellectuals!” I’m not mad at them for this. They’re “in” where they want to be and making a very good living.
But don’t pretend that your REAL concern goes beyond that! Again, you can sign all the “contracts with America” that you want and have all the CSPAN specials that you can schedule – but in the end, this is about selling books and TV appearances for Tavis and West for sure!
Finally, personal attacks on the POTUS – not policy directed assessments and comments are straight weak! And these are our so called “intellectuals?!!” C’mon Black People – we’re better than this, aren’t we!?
Going forward lets do better,
The West Critique: The Folly of Puffed-Up Self-Importance
Apparently, Professor Cornel West has a love-hate relationship with President Obama. Scalding criticism of the President coming from the mouth of Dr. West stands in stark contrast to the visual imagery of a fawning Dr. West that immerges whenever he is in the actual presence of Mr. Obama. The incongruity of these two versions of Dr. West merits a close reading of the article “The Obama Deception: Why Cornel West Went Ballistic” by Chris Hedges of Truthdig.com.
According to that article, the major premise of Dr. West’s argument is that Mr. Obama has made a Faustian bargain with the Wall Street oligarchs and the corporate plutocrats for the sole purpose of holding on to the reigns of presidential power, and Mr. Obama lacks the requisite vertebrae to stand up to these powerful predatory economic forces that are inflicting pain on the vulnerable masses. While Dr. West’s scathing critique of Mr. Obama bears some verisimilitude, the timing and the tone of his critique is indiscreet, and judging from the internecine nature of his critique, it causes one to question whether Dr. West is motivated by his professed concern for the dismal plight of the suffering masses or by hubris and a desire to get even for what he perceives as a personal presidential slight.
The inherent weakness in Dr. West’s critique of Mr. Obama rests not in any defect in his argument; its weakness lies in the presentation of that argument; its validity has been challenged primarily because it is an argument couched in vitriolic personal rhetoric. As a case in point, Dr. West’s references to Mr. Obama as a “puppet” and a “black mascot” are not criticisms of Mr. Obama’s policies; they are criticisms of Mr. Obama’s character. This approach is no way to gain Mr. Obama’s trust and confidence in the wisdom of Dr. West’s counsel. Although, it is certainly true Mr. Obama has veered away from many of the popular stances that propelled then candidate Obama into the White House, and furthermore, he has also resorted to consolidating his grip on the presidency by courting the very same Wall Street oligarchy he once vilified.
Who can blame him? In the true spirit of American democracy, it is campaign time and there are alliances to be formed and contributions to be had from the corporate plutocracy. During the 2008 presidential campaign, many of us waxed teary-eyed as we fell asleep and dreamed that we were witnessing the second coming of the Messiah, only to emerge from our celestial bliss awakened to the earthly reality that we were once again in the presence of yet another Caesar. The image of the messianic figure, the heroic charismatic champion of the poor and downtrodden has undergone an alchemic transmutation into a kind of clay-footed figurine idol, a consummate political pragmatist. Such is the landscape of American politics, a landscape seeded with unrealistic delusions that inevitably mature into crops of realistic disillusionment. No one should be surprised, least of all such career public intellectuals as Dr. West.
Part of the angst Dr. West must feel certainly derives from his own disillusionment with Mr. Obama; the other part of that angst arises from the sobering realization that his wounds are self-inflicted. After all, it was he who allowed his judgment to become impaired by the seductive allure and the intoxicating prospect of gaining proximity to the power that resides in a newly minted African American president. He saw himself assuming the exalted role of De Facto Counselor to the President, a role which has been usurped by the Reverend Al Sharpton. He saw himself as a twenty-first century version of Frederick Douglass to Mr. Obama—the presumed twenty-first century version of Abraham Lincoln. In spite of all the personal campaigning he did on behalf of Mr. Obama, he couldn’t even score a ticket to the inaugural dance or even a presidential courtesy call. No wonder he is frustrated.
His instinctive reaction was to misinterpret Mr. Obama’s stiff-arming as a personal insult, rather than as part of a broader calculus of political expediency similar to the stratagem employed during the stiff-arming of Reverend Wright. And like a jilted lover who has been inexplicably kicked to the curb, Dr. West, through his questioning of Mr. Obama’s “blackness”, has sought retribution on a very petty level by targeting personal attacks on what may be the soft underbelly of Mr. Obama’s psyche, his sense of racial identity. Such pettiness on the part of Dr. West is not only unbecoming of someone of his stature, it undermines the strength of his argument; while at the same time, it threatens to fracture the political solidarity of the African American community and the prospect of a second term Obama Presidency.
And let’s be clear, the prospect of a second term Obama Presidency, a prospect which admittedly lacks the “audacity of hope” luster of the first, is still a far more attractive alternative to any version that the neo-fascist Tea Party Republicans would offer. Dr. West should hold his fire until the advent of a more appropriate time.
Brother X
West is speaking to what many black folk around Chicago have known for some time. The community had strong reservations about the potus. Behind the rhetoric was a hydepark chicago slite with personal ambitions that were more important than his altruistic desire for change that we could believe in. Jeremiah wright gave him credibility in the community when many had concerns of the kind West is currently speaking to. Wright.. under the bus. Van jones under the bus..sherrod …under the bus poor and working class folk as we predicted…under the bus. Amazed at the blind support of a politician that has shown time and again he lacks the “backbone” the intestinal fortitude to stand firmly on most issues.
This man received a nobel peace prize but his current foreign affairs and war policies and recently celebrated killing of bin laden would suggest the contrary. I cannot believe that black folk are so willing to dismiss those with substantiated analysis and critique of our president reducing them to hatred?
Eric holder has not prosecuted one single player in the banking scandals that led to our current financial crisis? Why? Because in private practice he represents these types..and trust me we all including the likes of west and dyson were equally as critical of the bush doctrine and policies during that administration so to assert that these brothers motivations are” petty” is just not true.
Most of the blind supporters just became involved in the political process during obamas ascension to the presidency while these brothers have been protesting and speaking truth about our governments policies for years. Unbelievable!
“There are rumors that he is angry that he was never invited to the inauguration, or that he felt dismissed because the administration won’t return his phone calls.”
West as much as said so in his interview with Truthdig. But maybe West’s motives are something else altogether, like getting attention for his the New Progressive Alliance, an organization that he steers, which has started a campaign to primary President Obama with the stated goal of throwing the next Presidential election to the republicans. http://blog.reidreport.com/2011/05/firebaggers-genius-plan-to-primary-obama/#more-24310
West seems to have positioned himself to serve as “black mascot/puppet” for the still bitter PUMAs at FireDogLake.
I think Dr. West’s assessment that the President has been a lackey for Wall Street is correct. This is confirmed merely by whom he has appointed to key positions in his administration. Tim Geithner, former head of the privately-owned NY Federal Reserve, to Treasury Secretary. Gary Genselar, former Goldman Sachs executive, to Chairman of the Commodities Trade and Futures Commission. The functions of the Treasury, the Commodities Commission, and the privately-owned Federal Reserve affects the economic wealth of our community each and everyday ranging from the abysmal interest rates on saving accounts, high gas and food prices.
Nicholas & Jardea, I appreciate your comments. Nicholas, I especially appreciate your reminder about the next two Supreme Court appointees. We definitely do not want ANY Republican to make any more appointments. I must also thank mysistagirl for her comments as she started me thinking about other things that have been accomplished during President Obama’s two years and four months in office. If we can help each other think and then organize around what has been accomplished, maybe we can have a better dialogue about what else we need. I am disappointed that our PhD’s are not more focussed on organizing and are not trying to organize with the rest of us to fight the BS in the political discourse and highlight what has happened since we elected President Obama.
What we need to understand is that the President is a politician and that politicians respond to organized efforts. If we need more, we need to organize and position ourselves to influence votes in the Congress and support the President when he proposes solutions to issues that can benefit us. One of the most important issue we need to all organize on is defeating racism which as we’ve seen, the President has to battle every day. Are Dr. West, Tavis Smiley and Dr. Watkins as vocal about the racism the President faces every day from the Republicans and their leadership in Congress who have failed to denounce the Tea Party, the birthers, Rush Limbaugh, the Neo-nazis and other hate groups who are organizing to take their country back? Or do they blame the President for all the racism coming from the right-wing community? It seems that President Obama is not the only African American who needs to be held accountable. West, Smiley and Watkins need to refocus and find some balance in their arguments. If not, we can just ignore them.
SCREW CORNBALL WEST!!!Mr. Obamas presidency has had its failures,BUT MYRIAD SUCESSES AS WELL.By the way,Prof. Watkins, why don’t black mis-leaders such as yourself EVER mention the growing suburbanization of affluent African Americans who are leaving often black-run,corrpt cities for the places the white middle and upper-middle-classes first entered in the 60’s,70’s and 80’s?What?Don’t xare to adress the burgeoning black well-off classes? Why?Afraid they see you amongst the rest of the failed, popinjay black “mis-leadership’ which preaches victimization to the black under-class,whose lot has worsened since the 70’s,and especially since the super-recession,for a number of reasons, while they prosper from these unfortunates’ misery.
Right on and to the real point Rhonda. Rhonda’s questions illustrate that the things done to improve the lives of ordinary people improve,s the lives of Black Americans. Does Dr. West expect the president to write a check that can only be cashed by a black people. What’s important for me is who will appoint the next two Supreme Court justices. If Milissa, Cornel, Tavis and Boyce could direct their intellect to that task, that would make me happy. P.S Rhonda think you Rhonda, hope to hear more from you.
Rhonda, OUTSTANDING questions! Thanks for sharing.
Personal issues aside, whether they be between Dr. West & President Obama or between Dr. Perry & Dr. West, I would like Dr. Watkins to answer these questions.
ONE, did killing Osama bin Laden help the African American community? TWO, what high-level government official pushed to get the Black farmers settlement thru Congress? THREE, does the provision in the new health care bill that allows parents to insure their children until the age of 26 equal change we can believe in? FOUR, do the credit card changes in the Credit Protection Act passed last year help the African American community?
FIVE, does the increase in Pell grants and funds available for federal financial aid help the African American community? SIX, does the increase in military pay over the last two years help African Americans in the military and their families? SEVEN, does passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Equal Pay Act help African American women? I found all of this on the White House website.
EIGHT, how much of this work has Dr. West organized to make happen? NINE, what are Dr. West , Dr. Watkins, Dr. Perry or any of our other esteemed intellectuals doing to help us deal with all the new voter ID laws passed at the state level that are designed to be the new poll taxes and literacy tests to create barriers to a strong African American turnout next year?
And finally, TEN how much organizing is Dr. West doing in the communities he says the President is ignoring? Maybe once Dr. Watkins stops dealing with BS, he can address these more serious questions.
Dr. Watkins,
Has it ever occurred to you that, maybe, Dr. Harris-Perry may have more insight into Dr. West’s thinking, and, this is not some hidden agenda?
Well, I think the biggest problem with West’s (&Smiley’s) critique of the President is that it completely lacks anything close to balance. They never credit him for what he has done, choosing instead to rant loudly about what has not been done. And in pointing out what has not been done, they are totally silent about any obstacles that he faces in trying to do those things, so they just make the President out to be negligent with no desire to do those things.
The reason why the majority of the African American community does not receive the excessively negative message of the West & Smiley ilk is because, despite his shortcomings, most don’t see the President as the cold, black-hearted scoundrel that they make him out to be. West & Smiley claim to be christians so I would encourage them to take heed to Proverbs 11:1 “A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight.” Without appropriate balance, they just sound like raving attention seekers.
Like him or not, Al Sharpton has the inside track on this administration, and that is probably why he (surprisingly) seems so much more balanced about things. I like his response to this fiasco:
“[I]f you’re trying to achieve something you’re strategic,” he said. “If you’re just trying to play to get some cheap applause then you just vent, holler, scream and go back home.”
Sharpton urged African Americans to hold Obama accountable but not in a way that undermines him. “I’ve seen this movie before,” he said. “We had the first black mayor of New York, David Dinkins. And we got mad every time he went to a non-black event and we pouted until some of us didn’t vote, he lost and we got eight years of Giuliani.” He went on to say, “We fought to have a real president,” Sharpton told me. “We want him accountable, but we don’t want him to be accountable to us any differently than anyone else so that it’d be used against him and us.”
“There are those that are not capable of getting their head around the fact that [Obama is] the president of the United States and that he has to deal with that and deal with every constituency group that way,” Sharpton continued. “Many of them are so caught in their own insecurities and egos, there’s no strategy. You’re dealing with a climate that [Obama’s critics] would even question his birth certificate, what would make you think that if he wrote out a ‘Black Agenda’ from him that they would accept that from him? That’s absurd.”
And what about the charge that Obama isn’t black enough? “First of all, who’s saying that? And who defines what is black enough?” Sharpton asked before rattling off a list of things Obama has done or is attempting to do in the areas of education, poverty and unemployment that have helped Americans, blacks in particular.
“So, from black farmers to black colleges, a lot is being done,” he said. “More needs to be done. But, again, I think that there are those that have gone in the industry of being the blacks against Obama rather than trying to help the black community.”
