(ThyBlackMan.com) I just returned from the Measuring the Movement forum hosted by Rev. Al Sharpton in New York City. The forum was insightful and empowering as it pertains to getting members of African American leadership to see the value of accountability. NAACP President Ben Jealous gave time to the forum, and even President Barack Obama came through to give a speech.
In many ways, the convention was arguably the most successful gathering of its kind. I find Sharpton’s approach to action-oriented solutions to be refreshing, and as a person who sat on a panel with both Jealous and Sharpton, it’s a relief to be involved with a forum where the goal is not to simply provide the best sound bite. “Sound bite leadership” in the black community needs to die and be replaced with strong, direct action that recognizes the urgency of our deadly situation.
The day after the forum, I got off an airplane to hear that Rev. Sharpton got into a heated debate over the black agenda with Cornel West. I knew the conversation would be volatile, and I was concerned about the imagery of two black men going to war on MSNBC. Ed Schultz was the host of “A Stronger America: The Black Agenda,” a show that allowed a few voices to air their perspective on what a black agenda should look like in the age of Obama. Personally, I wonder why such a show was not positioned on a black network, or at least with an African American host.
As I expected, the argument came to a predictable boiling point. Consistent with the views of his close colleague, Tavis Smiley, Cornel West fought hard to short-circuit the partnership between President Obama and Rev. Al Sharpton. Sharpton, a man not known to back down from anyone, defended his positions well and also challenged those who “sit in the ivory tower” and talk without much action (I do not consider Cornel West to be one of those people; he believes what he says and acts on it).
I watched the entire exchange shaking my head, primarily because I knew that such a fight was simply inevitable. As I wrote on the Huffington Post a couple of weeks ago, the Obama Presidency has created a divide among black public figures that I pray does not cripple our community. I love both Rev. Sharpton and Cornel West, and it was sad to watch them get into such a personal and nasty fight on national television.
My perception is that Cornel is coming from a genuine place. I cannot say the same about Tavis Smiley, who seemed to have a problem with Barack Obama’s disrespect toward him during the 2008 presidential election. West’s statements about the elitism of the Obama Administration (he mentions that Obama would be glad to speak out if a wealthy banker were stopped by police, but not if it were a poor black man) are on point. He is also correct to note that the administration has been slow to readily acknowledge African American suffering.
In Sharpton’s defense, the truth is that having an African American figure on the inside of the Obama Administration gives our community a better chance to grab the ear of the president. What’s yet to be determined, however, is whether or not the president is listening to Sharpton’s concerns or giving priority to the issues being faced by other constituencies. Women’s groups, the gay community and the Latino community have gotten high priority from the Obama Administration, but African Americans remain at the back of the bus when it comes to our primary concerns, including mass incarceration and growing unemployment rates of over 15 percent. My belief is that Cornel West and Al Sharpton are both witnessing the community’s struggle up close, and Sharpton hopefully serves as a true and passionate surrogate for those who are frozen out of Obama’s big white house.
President Obama has reason to be concerned about losing much of his steadfast African American support. According to a recent survey conducted at YourBlackWorld.com, 34.4% of black respondents said that President Obama failed to meet their expectations after being elected. This disappointment may not translate to votes for the Republicans, but it can manifest itself in reduced voter turnout in the African American community.
Another survey at YourBlackWorld.com reveals that nearly two-thirds (62.3%) of black respondents do not see President Obama as a civil rights leader. Given that Obama is not a civil rights leader, we must be careful not to feel that his presence reduces the significance of true civil rights leaders like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and others. This means that we need genuine and empowered advocates within black America who can mobilize the people to put pressure on any administration that is in power so that our rights as Americans can be secured.
In other words, sitting around and hoping that President Obama will look out for our interests is not nearly as effective as pursuing our interests ourselves. Work must be done on the ground to lay out a black agenda, putting pressure on both Congress and the Obama Administration to see to it that our community is not left behind. Both West and Sharpton would likely agree with this assertion, and this can begin the quest for common ground.

This is how White Bigots took over the EEOC from Black Bigots. Bigots v. Bogots at the EEOC.
Joseph Ray Terry had all the right credentials: as a lawyer, he had spent many years fighting discrimination against minorities. His employer, the EEOC, had consistently given Mr. Terry “superior” and “excellent” performance reviews. But Mr. Terry was white, and he was forced to repeatedly sue the EEOC in order to win a promotion for which he had been applying for over 10 years!
Mr. Terry is a white, Louisiana-trained lawyer. In 1984 he submitted his first application within EEOC to become a district director for EEOC. Over the next 10 years EEOC repeatedly turned Terry down because he is white, and EEOC promoted many “disadvantaged minorites” ahead of Mr. Terry, one of whom did not even have a high school diploma. District Director Opus Perry a Black attorney never found any Race (Black) discrimination in New Orleans LA and he was promoted to District Dirctor of a larger Black community of Los Angelas CA.

When I clicked on that ABC story that referenced Sharpton, near the bottom of the article it infers something else too that I really HOPE is not true of Sharpton.
BACK TO OBAMA….
To be clear, Obama has been a disaster for Civil Rights, Civil Liberties and in part the Economy. He not only retained most of Bush’s REPUBLICAN policies but actually expanded and/or extended them hence the Patriot Act, warrantless wiretapping, Drones, unauthorized Wars (Libya), NDAA….who knew he loved militancy so much?! As a Democrat, I certainly did not which is why I voted for him back in 2008 bc I thought he was a DEMOCRAT with democratic values and hence a democratic agenda to include democratic policies for ALL and yes that includes minorities and specifically BLACK communities & THEIR concerns too. Nonetheless, it appears I and so many other millions of democratic constituents were simply WRONG or shall I say “mislead” to believe that Obama would represent the Left view once in the WH, whereas he instead, shifted from Left to CENTRIST to now appearing to lean Right…certainly not what Democratic voters voted for in 2008….he should NOW be running on the Republican ticket along with the rest because truth be told Obama scares me just as much as those Republicans do!
So to ALL who say FOUR MORE YEARS, my response is “ok but this time tell me EXACTLY how will such a vote benefit ME and MY COMMUNITY and OUR concerns?”
Ikalean,
Please forgive me for getting into this discussion so late, but I only recently received membership and I couldn’t keep quiet as I consider the situation in our country to be quite serious. I hear you and I understand your concerns about what Tavis and Doctor West are doing, especially as they are considered to be his traditional “base” of supporters. But I think a larger issue is getting lost here.
While there can be short-term damage to President Obama to have criticism thrown at him from his own presumed constituency, it is also important to recognize that as our President, he is an elected official, and has accountability. The process of election comes from making promises, taking positions, and expressing an agenda, so that voters know what to expect from him if he wins. I’m stating this obvious fact because often in our enthusiasm and passion for having a black family in the White House we forget that Democracy remains healthy and intact only when we question and challenge our elected officials. To defend or support our leaders unconditionally leads to a recipe for unchecked power, which will corrupt anyone.
The other problem we face is that Obama is surrounded by and hit with criticism from the Right constantly and it makes us defensive of him, rightly so. But it also means he is forced to compromise and cater to interests who have not elected him. Defending him does not ensure he will defend our rights or the programs that bring minorities and poor people to a level playing field with the privileged classes in this country. Washington is an ugly place. Just ask Jack Abramoff. I am assuming you voted for Obama not because of his color, but because his stated agenda was sympathetic to your concerns.
In reality, the agenda that he laid out hasn’t been enacted, and in some ways we have lost more civil rights and economic power under Obama than under Bush. No one should expect 100% return on campaign promises, even amorphous ones like hope and change. But look at the NDAA, the continuance of the Patriot Act, the pardoning of AT&T for illegal wire-tapping, the assasination and detention of U.S Citizens, the refusal to prosecute Wall Street criminals or any Bush administation official for their war crimes and you will see how the state of our democracy is under attack. You could view this as the nature of politics. But even Obama stated on election day that change could be made only by all of us pulling together and creating the change we want to see. You bring about change in your life in your way, and Tavis and Doctor West take another strategy by raising issues in the public sphere that would otherwise go ignored in this contentious political climate.
What they are doing, IMHO, is changing the tone of the conversation by pointing to issues that American citizens, regardless of color, deal with, i.e. speaking truth to power.
Right now the mainstream media has its lens continually focused on the agenda of right wing adherents who claim entitlement programs, terrorist threats, debt, and immigrants are ruining this country. Nothing could be further from the truth, I think you could agree with that. However, the establishment and its media would choose to focus strictly on these issues because it makes the Obama Administration look weak and “wrong”.
If he caves in to the calls for cutting the social safety net, ramping up the war machine for more attacks in the Middle East, giving corporations, religious institutions and the rich even more rights and powers than they already have, how will that help you? Will he even be your President anymore?
There is already ample evidence that his is not “our” president, but the official who serves the banks and financial services industry, who want as little change as possible. Only when he serves OUR interests can we truly say he is our president. Money is a powerful motivator, but speech can be just a powerful. Numbers count. If you rally people for your cause and call attention to the numerous crises this country actually faces, that is not “bothering” or attacking the President, it is our responsibility and duty as citizens in a democracy. This fight is bigger than black on black issues. The Health Care Program was a massive cave-in to the Pharmaceutical and Health Insurance industries and they will profit immensely from it, while the Public Option will remain anemic and largely underfunded if it even gets implemented. The tax incentive is a short term solution that will damage us long-term since the payroll tax is how we fund Social Security.
The real battle we face, as you have discussed is for the future of our children. If you love them, please understand that unflinching support of someone who is betraying your interests will NOT bode well for that future. If Tavis and Dr. West didn’t bring the issues of poverty and income inequality to the national discussion, who would have done it? If we still supported the President, and under pressure from the Right and its faithful media (i.e. Fox News), he dismantled our much needed social programs, defunded education, ratched up the War Machine to an even higher level, and violated our Civil Liberties in the name of “National Security” who benefits? Only the Right, and only the richest among them.
Please ask yourself, “When I or my loved ones become homeless and lose access to healthcare, when education becomes so dismal that my children can barely read or write, when our comunities become so impoverished that criminal activity is the number one economic market that rules my streets, can I still in good faith support my President since he is black?” Community work is vital, but we have enough sense to understand we should be doing that regardless. This shouldn’t let the President off the hook for his responsibilities.
Obama can handle the criticism. He’s an adult and understands the problems of being the highest profiled and most powerful official in the world. But the office he holds must be examined for its use and abuse of power. Other officials are there because they also represent powerful interests who want things to continue to go their way – or else. Without the voice of the vulnerable and weaker members of society being represented in Washington and on the National scene, who do you think he will be forced to listen to?
This is a war for the future of our country, and we won’t win by leaving Obama alone. He challenged us to bother him on election day, he asked that we hold him accountable, because the other side will certainly do worse. Public discourse is a largely misunderstood and underused tool that the mainstream media uses to great affect, partially because they downplay its significance. But we are all affected by it. It must be challenged and changed, because winning hearts and minds is what politics and power is all about. Too often we forget that and that is exactly what those in power want us to do.
Please step back for a moment and remember that this game is a winner-take-all situation. We can’t let up on Obama any more than the thousands of corporate and big money lobbyists in Washington are letting up on him – and they never will.

This information is more powerful than “Watergate of the 1970’s”. Thats why many are trying to make this about Ricardo Jones. The public has been lied to by obama and his handlers. The right to work in a hostile free work environment is a fundamental right and the bedrock of this country. Once the president engages in this corruption and fraud against the public this raises to level of high crimes and misdemeanors? Which means what? The president did appoint his wife’s friend (Ms. Berrien) from Harvard law school to head the corrupt and/or rogue EEOC correct? The president when he was the only Black/White looking senator was on the Subcommittee on Employment an Workplace Safety correct? The president is a Harvard Law Professor correct? The EEOC is a Rogues agency correct? Whom benefits from this corruption? Attorneys and Bad employers correct?
How many executives orders have the president signed reference to the Rogue EEOC. The key to EPA is the hiden salaries which the government has Federal and/or State taxes and (W-2 forms) correct? Did the president’s executive order for Ms. ledetter state the aforementioned NO!
Has Tavis Smiley or Ph’d (Dr) Cornel West ever pointed out the above? NO. This is too important to all Americans to make fun of it correct?

The price of moral courage among Black people. There are many of US Blacks who are as guilty as the whites who oppressed US. The truth let it be known to all that color discrimination among the different shades of Black skin is still a problem. The America that I fought for and defended for over twenty year in many foreign countries at risk of my life can accept all people as equals. Today we blame the Mexicans for our lack of Jobs and poor economy. I’ve heard many Black’s talk about the Mexicans like the whites did US before the civil rights act of 1964. I will stand by the Mexicans because they are good hard working people who just want to feed the families and send money back to Mexico where it is needed the most. Many among US Blacks want to step on the necks of the Mexicans because they do day labor from the corners of this so called great country. My Mother came to this so called great country illegally to start a new life and family as the Mexicans did. My Mother’s first language was Spanish also. My Mother and Father were born in Panama and my Great Parents born in Jamaica West Indies. My Great Grand Mother was a White Irish woman who had courage to married a Black Man as many White women did at the time. I have Syrians on my Fathers side of the family. On both sides of my family originally came from Black Africa the source of my families beginnings. I was born in Brooklyn NYC a Black Male and will remain that till the day I die. Many in my family use the status of Black Latinos to their benefit. I have never used same and never will. I could call myself a Black Latino because of my Mother and Father and my name (Ricardo Enrique Jones Sr.). I grew-up in the Hood’s of NYC and SE/NE Washington DC and proud of that. Went to public schools in the aforementioned and Maryland (PG county). The phony president never had and/or learned any of what the Hood taught me about life. I’m a Proud Black Man from SE Washington DC and will remain same till the day I die. Im darker than a paper bag also. Truth to Word if you can take it.

The Black elite are still supporters of the president no matter what he doesn’t do for Black people. We’re still in denial about the gaming of our own people by our own people. How much money is enough to sellout ourselves? How many pieces of silver does it take to sellout our own RACE? This is just what happened in Nazi germany to the Jews. Half Jew’s were giving some privilages also and then that was changed in the end. Corruption rules the day in the Obama adminstration no different then the Bush adminstration. We made the worse mistake possible in not thinking about the CON’s of a Black looking president who has low or no Moral courage. We must make the president to his job on civil rights reform today. Our grand children and great grand children will paid the bill for the presidents lack of Moral courage and corruption. Dear Friend:
Thank you for writing to share your thoughts. I appreciate hearing from you.
My Administration is committed to reform that ensures Government serves the public interest rather than special interests. The day after my inauguration, I signed my first Presidential Memorandum,”Transparency and Open Government,” calling for a more transparent, participatory, and collaborative Government that engages with the American people. That same day, I signed an Executive Order that imposes tougher ethics standards on this Administration than any in history. For too long, lobbyists have wielded undue influence, and this Executive Order helps close the “revolving door” between lobbying firms and Government.
Our efforts have continued since those initial steps. My Administration issued an Open Government Directive instructing every Federal agency to take immediate steps to open their operations to the public. This Directive adds to current resources we have created to increase transparency, including Data.gov, a warehouse of Government information. We are also using easy-to-understand websites like Recovery.gov and it.usaspending.gov to cut down on fraud, waste, and abuse by tracking Government spending. And, for the first time ever, Americans can view White House visitor records online, where tens of thousands of these records are made available every month.
While we have made historic progress, much work remains. The American people deserve to know who is spending money to influence their votes, so special interests do not drown out the voices of ordinary Americans, and I remain committed to stemming the flood of foreign funding into our elections. With the participation of more Americans, I am confident our Government can uphold our Nation’s founding principles while meeting the demands of the 21st century.
To learn more about how we are bringing change to Washington, visit: http://www.WhiteHouse.gov. Thank you again for writing.
Sincerely,
Barack Obama

None of the current Black leaders are concerned about civil rights corruption at the feral level because they’re all taking some form of kickbacks. Maxine Water Representative from Compton Ca, was interviewed by Donald Winkfield of Black Star News this month (December) and she said the EEOC is not investigating Black complaints because of the lack of Budget. This is a lie to cover-up for the corruption at the EEOC. Mr. Winkfield told Maxine Waters that the EEOC is dismissing all Black complaints and he has a Senior Federal Investigator who has evidence and witnessed same. Maxine Waters didn’t ask to speak to Ricardo Jones. All of the Black politicians are in on the gaming of Black people. Many of the Black elite accept the corruption against their own people and benefit from same. See Fear does different things to different people. Elite Blacks earn a well paid living from white bigots. Elite Blacks will never bite the hand that feeds them. When the elite Blacks are finally forced to confront racism and lose they cave-in totally and just accept the condition that has feed them all the time. Our real enemy are the elite Blacks. Don’t take me wrong we as Black people need to unite under Pan-Africanism which means: African Americans, Blacks from Caribian and South America, All Blacks from Africa must vote as a block just like other ethnic groups ie: Jews, Irish, Italians, Asians, latins and others. We must force obama to include a PLANK in his re-election platform which addresses our concerns “JOBS and a RIGHT TO WORK IN A HOSTILE FREE WORK ENVIRONMENT and enforce all current laws reference same and update/reform same.
If obama doesn’t then we will vote against him (obama) and any politician who supports him (obama). None of this the devil I know verse the Devil I don’t know BS. We don’t have much time to do this or it will be four more years of YES WE CAN which lead to what???
The Black community will not survive as little corrupt white people . This is the position of the Black elite. Once again if you replace a Bad white COP with a Bad Black COP we accomplish nothing. Because they both beat heads for the same reasons??? Steve Biecko a GREAT Black Leader of South Africians said this and was killed for it and for standing up of his peoples (Blacks) rights. For the those who don’t know who Steve Beicko is Danzel Washington played Steve Beicko in the GREAT GREAT movie “CRY FREEDOM” which was made to show the conversion of a White liberal editor from South Africa Donald Woods. Look it up.

STUFFED MONKEY ON A NOOSE FOUND IN NEW ROCHELLE, NEW YORK SCHOOL OFFICE
(This is the case which caused Ricardo Jones’ discharge from the rogue EEOC).
NEW ROCHELLE – A middle school custodian filed a discrimination complaint against the school district after his supervisor hung nooses in management offices, including one wrapped around the neck of a stuffed monkey.
Robert Johnson, a night custodial aide at Isaac E. Young Middle School, said plant supervisor Phil Carino had hung three nooses in shared office space, according to a complaint filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Johnson said he removed the first, but that Carino defiantly put up two more, the complaint continued.
Johnson, who is black, said that despite his complaints about the incidents, which occurred between September 2006 and July 2007, school officials failed to seriously reprimand Carino, who is white. Johnson said the district also postponed districtwide racial-sensitivity training, planned for last month.
“This man can hang up nooses with monkeys, I take it down and he can hang up more and nothing gets done,” Johnson said. “He should be demoted or fired.”
School board President Cindy Babcock Deutsch said yesterday that the board had filed a “comprehensive” response to the EEOC complaint, but that she could not comment on pending administrative legal actions or personnel matters.
However, in a statement, she acknowledged that the incidents occurred and said “there were serious consequences for the responsible party … including remedial education and a penalty.”
Deutsch said sensitivity training for all employees would be held in April and noted that a letter outlining the district’s policy of racial, ethnic, gender and religious tolerance had been sent to employees in October.
Carino, who Johnson said was suspended for three weeks without pay as a result of the incidents, did not return calls seeking comment.
The EEOC does not comment on charges when they are in the administrative process, said Nancy Boyd, deputy director of the EEOC’s New York district office.
Richard Adamson, pastor of Gospel Tabernacle Church of Christ, said he and other community leaders had met with school officials last year to discuss what he labeled as “racist” incidents. He said the district only recently began taking the group’s concerns about sensitivity training seriously after the group threatened to go to the media.
Adamson is encouraging residents to attend tonight’s school board meeting at George M. Davis Jr. Elementary School to share their views with trustees.
“That offends every black person,” Adamson said. “The president just made a statement on nooses. The whole country’s taking this seriously. But when we bring this to them, they do nothing about it.”
“The school board and the superintendent act like it doesn’t exist,” said Ronald Williams, a past president of the New Rochelle chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, who also met with district officials. “If this was a swastika, it would have been a totally different reaction.”
According to the EEOC complaint and copies of internal district documents provided to The Journal News by Williams, Johnson was transferred to Isaac E. Young in September 2006. On his first night there, Johnson said, he noticed a stuffed monkey hanging from a noose attached to a picture board in an office used by Carino and two black supervisors.
Johnson said he removed the noose and confronted one of the black supervisors, Kenny Bonds, who he said brushed off his concerns. A few months later, Johnson said he saw another empty noose hung from the picture board and removed it. In July 2007, a third noose was hung, which Johnson removed before complaining to Fred Smith, the district’s deputy superintendent.
According to district documents, the stuffed monkey with the noose had been put there several years earlier by three employees, including one black worker, as a joke with no racist intentions. In the documents, Carino acknowledged that he never took it down and that, after Johnson removed it, he put up the other small nooses. But Carino insisted his actions were not an acts of racism, according to school documents.
Carino was reprimanded, first with a letter in his file, according to district documents, and later, Johnson said, with a three-week, unpaid suspension. Following the first meeting on the matter on July 24 of last year with Johnson, Carino and other district officials, Principal Anthony Bongo sent a letter dated July 26 to Carino praising his “productive and trustworthy” service, but criticizing him for hanging the nooses.
“This was clearly poor judgment and I must officially extend my displeasure and reprimand for this episode,” Bongo wrote, adding: “I appreciate your apology to Mr. Johnson, which I believe was heartfelt and sincere. You have owned up to this as a gentleman, as I knew you would.”
Superintendent Richard Organisciak wrote Carino on Oct. 19, telling him that hanging the nooses was unacceptable, but noting there wasn’t any evidence that he had engaged in “other conduct which created a hostile or unwelcoming workplace.”
“In considering an outcome, I am giving a great deal of weight to the fact that the monkey and the nooses appear to have been isolated acts, rather than a pattern of conduct on your part,” Organisciak wrote.
Williams said he had received the letters from district sources, but the district could not verify their authenticity yesterday.
Johnson said he is considering filing a discrimination lawsuit.
“I felt they were just trying to ignore the situation and sweep it up under the rug,” he said. “As far as they’re concerned it’s done and over with. It’s not.”

The noose incident in New Rochelle is just another reminder that we have along way to go for real race relations in Westchester County. The issue is a greater concern when you have people in supervisory and policy making positions that show actions of bigotry and racism.
We would think after the cross burning incident in Cortland that our local and state politicians can pass legislation that will protect citizens from crimes such as this.
Apparently there is a growing epidemic of racial hatred and bigotry with in the Metro New York area. Oct. 9, 2007, a noose was found on the door of Teachers College professor Madonna Constantine who teaches a class on racial justice. On Sept. 11,2007, a group of White men allegedly attacked several Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) Black basketball players and their coach.
Even African American Law Enforcement Professionals are not immune to the institutional racial bigotry On the morning of Sept. 28, 2007, a janitor found a noose inside a locker room used by police officers at the Village of Hempstead police station in Long Island. Half of the officers serving on the Hempstead Police Department are people of color, 40 percent of which are Black, according to officials. News reports indicate there is suspicion that the target of the noose was newly appointed deputy chief, Willie Dixon who black

EEOC dismissing over 95% of all Black complaints of Race discrimination nationwide. This information is just the tip of the iceberg. The above information was in my sealed law suit. Please google Ricardo Jones EEOC to read more on the above.
Dr. Boyce the way that you have allowed yourself to be taken to task by Al Sharpton on his radio is much like watching a slave whiping from an old roots movie how you allow this man to put you out like that is UNREAL because you are not saying what he wants you to say something and the way that he wants you to say it and because you his enemy are not your enemy the man puts you on the spot attempts to make you look bad attacks you for what other have had to say and have done he puts you on the spot brings in invited guest after having you respone to something that you have wrote not giving the entire content as to what it was that you had wrote it’s sad Dr.Boyce even sadder that I had to write this note to point it all out to you.
President Obama passed himself off as Superman . Now he is just Superman Light. He does not have the ability to Fly . He does have the ability to lie. As for his X-ray vision. It only go for telling the different between his ass and a hole in the ground. He able leap over a lot of accountability in a single bound. Since he can not fly he runs along the ground saying this the best he could do. It kind of remind you of Chicken Little. The kryptonite the republicans have his a pet rock left over from the 70’s.
Lynne and Sepia I suspect are the same person carrying Obama’s water. They have a knack for responding at around the same time.
I checked out Sepia(thought it was Lynne) source on the mandate and apparently she left this out from the author.
“If this actually leads to a world in which large numbers of people don’t buy insurance and tell the IRS to stuff it, you could see that change. But for now, the penalties are low and the enforcement is non-existent.”
Many aren’t going to buy Health Insurance, and you can bet the lap dog politicians are going to do the bidding of the Insurance companies to tighten the law and go after poor citizens who don’t. So much for greatly helping the black community or the poor.
Continue supporting someone who has shown himself to have the ear of special interests rather than the ear of the people who elected him. And continue getting deceived because he’s got the most active melanin since any president before him. If this was George Bush, we won’t be having this debate.
I can’t believe one of you idiots, highlighted repealing don’t ask don’t tell as something that greatly benefited the black community. Shows how much of a joke you are, and how much of an idiot I am for wasting my time with you clowns. Then Val teaches me how laws get passed, but can’t answer for herself why Bush was successful at passing laws and Obama can’t.
@GR Couldn’t have said it better.
This is all very interesting. As Al Sharpton vigorously defending President Obama’s relatively weak body of work, he threw the Black Congressional Caucus under the bus in the process. Sharpton yelled that people had been in Washington for decades and that Obama had only been in Washington 2 1/2 years. Although, such chaos is grossly inaccurate, Dr. West asked Sharpton one simple question. Dr. West asked, “where’s the jobs bill?” This is a very important question.
Val has accurately posted a myriad of accomplishments from the Administration. We may debate the effectiveness of such policies. However, we can not debate this.
A. Barack Obama won the Democratic nomination because he ran counter to Hillary Clinton on the Iraq War and NAFTA, which has single-handedly cost hundreds of thousands of skill/labor jobs for African-Americans across the nation, particularly the South, i.e. textile, manufacturing, etc. On practically every other major issue, there was limited difference for Clinton, Obama, or Edwards (who was left of both Obama and Clinton).
TODAY: The United States increased the number of military boots on the ground under the military policy of President Obama. He was elected questioning the cost (he often spoke about the cost of “lives” and “treasure” for the Iraq War) and as President signficantly increased the cost of war and military commitment abroad.
TODAY: NAFTA is as strong as ever. We all remember then Senator Clinton claiming that the Canadian Prime Minister was assured that NAFTA was just fine under the Obama administration as he bashed everyone that supported the pathetic Clinton era legislation which has factually stripped our nation of jobs.
B. President Obama criticized former President George W. Bush for having “unpaid” tax cuts for the rich. He correctly pointed how this created a strain upon our nation during a time of war.
TODAY: President Obama extended those tax cut and has driven the Federal deficity to heights never imagined just 3 years ago. His commitment to socialized Wall Street was vigorous. In the meantime, he folds under claims that he is socializing healthcare.
Now, we have posters that are actually dumb enough to believe that the fact that President Obama’s financial reform bill brings benefits to our community. It is a sham! Dr. West is completely accurate to point to the FACT that Black folks refuse to hold President Obama to the fire. If this were a white politician who thrived on Black support in the manner that President Obama did, Al Sharpton would be marching (for media attention) in NYC.
This is one of the worst runs in recent history. People that point to unemployment and say ridiculous things like it got high before Obama are just factually inaccurate. The highest unemployment rate under former President Bush never exceeded 8%. Going back to the questions Dr. West posed. “Where’s the jobs bill?” What I see from President Obama is what we have seen from the Democrats for decades. These guys do not want solutions. These guys want a permanent underclass. We are that underclass. President Obama leads the party that leads a perpetual system of “hand-outs” and hollow leadership/solutions.
Val highlights a myriad of government hand-outs. I just want to echo Dr. Cornel West. WHERE IS THE JOBS BILL? Either Pres. Obama is dumb, ineffective, or he enjoys seeing almost 1 out of 5 Black people without a job. I have NEVER witnessed a US President since the Great Depression lead our nation through this kind of unemployment without a comprehensive jobs bill. Under our (Black) President, we have done the following: 1. sent over a hundred thousand troops to Afghanistan (as a multi-billion dollar cost), 2. started another war with Libya, 3. handed trillions to the failed banking industry, 4. handed billions to the auto-industry and has NO JOBS BILL.
Give me a break!
Anthony, the link wasn’t specifically for you…………*geez*
Lynne didn’t you send me a link to a post slamming “intellectuals”
http://weeseeyou.com/2011/04/03/memo-to-the-alleged-black-intellectual-class/
I was referring to that.
@lynee
What page can I find that on?
Who said i watch Joe Scarsborough? What makes you think I listen to right wing media? When has right wing media said anything about the bailouts?. Here is where I got the insurance and stocks link and yes I checked http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8R8baHPr2E
How is it weak sauce? Do you know how stocks work? Stock prices reflect the financial future of a company. All the stock prices were reflecting how they felt about the law. And it was favorable because there were going to make more money.
Who said anything about me being blacker than you? Are you feeling inadequate about your blackness?
“choosing to belive the other man over the brotha man”
This quote shows how stupid you are. What if the brotha man was part of the system? Have you considered that point?
I’m going out, send me that page. I’ll read it, and check it with other sources.
Anthony your reading comprehension skills are pathetic. Exactly where did I refer to you as an “intellectual”?? Dear, are you under the impression that the term “agent provocateur” is synonymous with “intellectual”??
“As I wrote on the Huffington Post a couple of weeks ago, the Obama Presidency has created a divide among black public figures that I pray does not cripple our community.”
Respectfully, I ask, what Black people are following anyone besides Obama? Jesse, Al, and Farrakhan have few followers.
Lastly, I think it would be substantively beneficial to Black folks if these forums, discussions, and whatnot would be limited to the topics of business and economics. I’m so, so, so tired of the religiously affiliated speaking on the behalf of Black interests in the U.S.
Anthony says:
How could you include Health Care Reform on that list? Tells me you didn’t follow the issue. Obama promised he won’t force people to buy insurance. He helped the insurance companies more than he helped any citizen in this country. Before the Health Care bill passed, all Insurance company stocks were at 52 Weeks high. Please be aware of the issues before you speak.
I followed the issue, while it’s obvious you followed white right wing talking points.
The mandate really isn’t a mandate at all:
“‘‘(g) ADMINISTRATION AND PROCEDURE.—
‘‘(1) IN GENERAL.—The penalty provided by this section
shall be paid upon notice and demand by the Secretary, and
except as provided in paragraph (2), shall be assessed and collected
in the same manner as an assessable penalty under subchapter
B of chapter 68.
‘‘(2) SPECIAL RULES.—Notwithstanding any other provision
of law—
‘‘(A) WAIVER OF CRIMINAL PENALTIES.—In the case of
any failure by a taxpayer to timely pay any penalty imposed
by this section, such taxpayer shall not be subject to
any criminal prosecution or penalty with respect to such
failure.
‘‘(B) LIMITATIONS ON LIENS AND LEVIES.—The Secretary
shall not—
‘‘(i) file notice of lien with respect to any property
of a taxpayer by reason of any failure to pay the penalty
imposed by this section, or
‘‘(ii) levy on any such property with respect to
such failure.’’.”
http://docs.house.gov/energycommerce/ppacacon.pdf
Using the insurance company stock price as evidence of them benefiting from healthcare reform is weak sauce talking point courtesy of Joe Scarsborough — a white Republican. (Ain’t it funny how these Blacker-Than-Thou types stay repeating white folks’ lies, choosing to belive the other man over the brotha man?)
You have to do better than a weak talking point. Like Boyce, you’re making blanket statements sans details and facts to support your argument.
@Val Your still holding on to those mini accomplishments aren’t you? Look if that is your expectation well good for you, I cannot fault you. My expectation wasn’t for him to do the same things Bush did, like give billions of dollars to pay of casino type gambling on wall street.
@Lynne,
What is the point of that video? In one breath you call me an intellectual and in another you question my intelligence/knowledge on a trivial matter. Obviously Bush knows has to pass laws better than Obama. Can you explain that phenomenon?
Anthony, obviously your high school civics teacher failed you miserably.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEJL2Uuv-oQ
@ Anthony
“We are talking about a man who was voted in on a clear progressive mandate, only to turn out he was lying. Obama and Bush are miles apart in intelligence, yet that idiot got just about everything he wanted. But Obama can’t. It’s not because he can’t if he tried, it’s because both parties are playing good cop bad cop”
🙂 It just kills you doesn’t it Anthony. President Obama has done more for the black and minority community than ANY President in American history and it just kills you. However, despite all he has done, it isn’t enough because one man can’t do it all. We have too many issues that have long gone without a solution and we all have to participate in in moving our agenda forward.
If you choose not to help make a difference Anthony, then that is your choice. This is a free country after all. Let me know when you are able to find a challenger that will accomplish 1/3rd of what he has accomplished for black and brown folks.
@lynne
Thanks for seeing me as an intellectual but I’m really not. I’m a college student, who prides himself on knowing what the issues are. I gave you a clear evidence how the Health Care bill helped companies more than it did citizens and you call me an intellectual. I give you reasons why Obama is part of the system and you paint me as an intellectual.
It’s a shame that most can’t look past the image and focus on the issues.
@Val
I love how Val hides behind universal truths like “action talks and BS walks.” Really!!! is that what we are talking about? We are talking about a man who was voted in on a clear progressive mandate, only to turn out he was lying. Obama and Bush are miles apart in intelligence, yet that idiot got just about everything he wanted. But Obama can’t. It’s not because he can’t if he tried, it’s because both parties are playing good cop bad cop.
Thank you Phinesse Demps. I am 40 plus years old and have been volunteering in our black community since I was 17 years old. Seventeen. We can all make a difference.
I chose to start a reading is fundamental and homework assistance program. Worked with kids who were struggling in school. As I got older and learned more, I helped folks who wanted to start their own business find out about the process and what resources were available to them. Helped them with their business plan and connected them to folks who could help. In my church, coordinated programs to help provide food and clothing for families in need and encouraged those families to find ways where they could be self sufficient and to recognize that no matter their situation, there is always something they can do to help someone else. I have kids of my own under 10 years and they were raised to know life isn’t about them it is about what we can do to help others.
So while our President can do some things, we have to hold accountable ourselves as parents, our local leaders and the folks sitting in Congress. We have to get past the point of all this bloviating and finger pointing and become a part of the solution. One man can’t do everything. He cannot. And it is disingenuous for folks to stand back and complain but are unwilling to step up and help to move forward a process.
Ain’t nobody going to save us. We don’t need it. We can do it ourselves and areas where we do need the help. . . we can pool our knowledge, pool our resources to help address those needs. Bottom line – action talks and BS walks.
We already know the works President Obama has done for the minority community while he was a community organizer, senator and now President. What are we going to do?
These so-called academics and agent provocateurs (like Anthony) are not worth a damn
http://weeseeyou.com/2011/04/03/memo-to-the-alleged-black-intellectual-class/
I love this quote from the great Harriet Tubman: “I freed a thousand slaves I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.” I am a 54 year old black man and I see no real black leadership.
My first black president is no Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. President Obama is a creation of our media. Black African’s are dying under a so called leader of African descent. Black America always has its head in the sand. The democrats and republicans don’t give a damn about us. There is no black agenda in America. The United States prison industrial complex is open for business. I have not seen any of our new so call Black leaders. Stand up on a soap-box, on a corner in any American city. The America media propaganda machine has created this great divide.
The real Black Agenda Report should be done with real African American people in their own environment. “Let’s see that on MSNBC, NBC, CBS, TBS, BET, TVONE, etc. Black America need jobs, housing and fairness ASAP, not talking heads. President Obama will be running for reelection for the next 22 months. What kind of changes has been made in term #1? This looks like the Clinton and Bush administrations of the past. Change! BS….

@Bro. Ahijah
No one is saying he is the source and creator of all ills in this country. But he hasn’t shown any interest for change. Don’t blame the black caucus, cause you and I know they are spineless. I’ll blame them when he takes the lead and they don’t follow. And he hasn’t done that.
As you concluded, Obama is a fraud, at judging by the way he campaigned.
All that is going on in America today is not Bro. President Obama’s fault or sole responsibility to fix, he needs help just like any other President but is the Congressional Black Congress stepping up to help No, not all of them. What about the House & Senate Demo’s No, not all of them… So… what is the man suppose to do when he has chumps and cow-towers all around him? And not to mention, he has been spineless & afraid to deal w/ certain issues himself especially when it comes to the poor & working class people. He shouldn’t have put himself out there like that as a “Drum major for justice and change,” if he wasn’t ready to take the weight!
@Sepia
@Val
I’m running down your list and I can’t understand how NASA, Gay Rights, two Supreme Court Judges help black people greatly.
Has Obama done some good things? YES. I guarantee you, that if we looked at George Bush’s 1st and 2nd term he did some good things too. Does that make Bush a successful president?.
Obama has proven to be weak on the main issues. From Health Care, to the two wars(and he attacked Libya), Taking money from the tax payers and giving it to the bankers who triggered the crash(just as George Bush did), a financial reform that every reasonable academic has called as not ending “too big to fail”. You speak of FEMA, but did you notice how his adminstration and BP worked hard low-balling oil spill estimates in the gulf? HAHAHA, jokes on you folks believing that their is a difference. These politicians do the have been bought, and they are working against your interest.
What good ole boy network did he end? His Economic team comprises of people under Clinton who pushed for laws that led to the financial crises. Watch “Inside Job” to see how the financial crises happened.
This is not the change we were promised. It’s not even token change for the country, much less black people
Dr. Boyce:
I agree with the previous post by Val and if she had not done that, I would have done the same thing. It is shame that Our Black Leaders are NOT correctly informing the community (locally & nationally), on what President Obama has done for US and the country in general. The majority of Blacks, do NOT understand the political process. We take the time to interview and discuss relationship books but we do NOT spend time to educate (in reference to plenty of radio shows on a national level, that have the time to TALK POLITICS AND DO NOT.), we take the time to discuss IDOL, DWTS, or other things but we can’t/won’t do a 15 minute piece on political issues?…. Dr. Boyce, I agree with you, why is this being discussed on a network other than Centric, BET, or TV-One? We can bring the tv show “The Game” back but we can’t do a NEWS SPECIAL?
For example, I have been trying to get the NCAAP on my radio show to discuss the NCAAP and it’s image BUT because we are so called SMALL, we get no reply. Our leaders are interested in grand standing,over-talking, trying to use big words, instead of REALLY doing something! Time for talk is OVER! Either do something or get out of the way. WE ARE ALL LEADERS AND I AM DOWN TO WORK WITH ANYONE FOR THE CAUSE! NO MORE MEETINGS! PUBLIC ENEMY SAID “FIGHT THE POWER”—which means action, NOT “TALK THE POWER”!….. One last thing, I have had the privilege of having Dr.Boyce on my radio show in Daytona Beach-Florida; Also as a former resident of Syracuse University, Dr. Boyce is NOT just a talker, he actually is out there working and talking. The reason why NO RADIO NETWORK OR TV NETWORK, in my opinion, has not given a TRUE radio/TV show to Dr.Boyce is because he will not compromise! You may not agree with everything he says or does, but it he is actually doing something. Dr.Boyce, please get these leaders together because, honestly, you are the only to get them to listen, shut up, and back on track….like in the old days……WORD!
OMG……I can’t believe Sephia, Val et al., you sound like programmed robots, some of you black folks have been fooled into believing politicians and preachers are your allies. Obama is not black or African-American anyway…I decided to disenfranchise myself from this entire corrupt voting system long ago once I found that Presidents are selected, bought and paid for just like Obama.
I can’t believe I still have to post things like this but. . .
Decisions and legislation from President Obama and his administration that have benefitted the Black community in distinctive ways. with one or two headline crashing exceptions to that rule. That “same” means the President not specifically targeting in public the goals, projects and activities he wants done as satisfying demands from the Black community. The tasks and projects just get done without fanfare and bombast.
As an example, with the 2010 Executive Order and the corresponding White House Initiative on HBCUs, nearly $100 million dollars in new 2011 budget funding became available to HBCUs, along with financial access to regular annual federal support for an expanded list of these schools, all non-available to them since the Lyndon Johnson era. Few but insiders knew. A second example is the Claims Resolution Act of 2010, which appropriated monies to settle the Cobell Indian lawsuit and the Pigford II Black farmers’ lawsuit, although this one was publicized a little more widely than other such Obama efforts.
Other accomplishments that greatly benefit the Black community include:
1. Getting Unemployment Benefits extended for another 13 months so over 3.5 million Americans could continue getting some monies for food, housing and other essentials.
2. Getting payroll taxes and taxes on small businesses reduced so more money is in people’s pockets and there is more incentive for small businesses to hire folk.
3. Signing an Executive Order to implement the President’s Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and directly increasing the federal financial support of HBCUs, together allowing a significant number of those colleges to stave off bankruptcy.
4. Getting the Black Farmers’ $1.3 billion dollar reparations legislation done and signed.
5. Appointing two remarkable women to the U.S. Supreme Court
6. Signing the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010, which drastically decreases the impact of disproportionate mandatory/minimum sentencing for first time drug abusers and those convicted of simple possession. A large number of Black American men and women are currently incarcerated because of these old-school “Rockefeller Laws” and many more were on the way.
7. Signing the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, after having already signed an Executive Order declaring assaults against gays as hate crimes.
8. Signing the first significant piece of legislation in nearly 100 years which called for comparable worth pay in the workplace (the Lillie Ledbetter Act).
9. Ordering FEMA and the EPA to once again report directly to the President, ending the mismanagement cycle for natural disasters and environmental issues seen during the Bush administration (remember Katrina?).
10. Ordering the White House and all federal agencies to respect the Freedom of Information Act, thereby overturning Bush-era limits on accessibility of federal documents.
11. Making significant cracks in the old boys’ network of constant contract procurement by ending no-bid federal contracting, banning tax delinquent and tax non-payment individuals and companies from bidding on federal contracts, ordering the removal and banning of lobbyists from serving on federal and White House advisory panels and boards, and ordering the ‘Open government Directive,’ which mandates all Cabinet departments to advocate, promote and implement public transparency and citizen participation in department initiatives.
12. Authorizing the US auto industry rescue plan and two GMAC rescue packages that essentially saved GM and Chrysler, and thus thousands of auto industry jobs.
13. Authorizing a $789 billion economic stimulus plan, which included 1/3 in tax cuts for working-class and middle-income families, 1/3 to states for infrastructure construction projects, and 1/3 to states to prevent the layoff of police officers, teachers and other civil servants at risk of losing their jobs because of city and state budget shortfalls
14. Authorizing and signing legislation that changes the relationship between credit card companies and the card-holding public banning the raising of rates arbitrarily and without advance notification, especially if customers are paying bills on time.
15. Signing the historic Wall Street reform bill that was designed to put in new regulations and federal oversight to end the kind of abusive practices that helped start and fuel the current recession, and to promote consumer safety through the presence of a powerful Consumer Protection Commission.
16. Signing legislation establishing the Promise Neighborhood Program.
17. Re-funding arts education nationally in public schools.
18. Fully funding the National Endowment for the Arts for the first time since President Carter’s administration.
19. Changing NASA’s current and future mission and tripling its funding.
20. Doubling the monies available for Pell Grants
21. Signing hate crime legislation to cover acts of homophobia.
22. Resurrecting funding and respect for the EEOC, which investigates racial discrimination in the workplace.
23. Tripling the budget to hire more FDA meat inspectors
24. Signing legislation to protect college students from predatory lenders and onerous pay-back schemes
25. Signing legislation to fully fund the VA for the first time since 1956 to honor our commitment to returning and former soldiers.

Lots more where those came from.
My question to you. . . name 5 things that you, West, Smiley done to provide solutions to the issues faced by some AAs in our communities over the last 20 years?
I knew the conversation would be volatile, and I was concerned about the imagery of two black men going to war on MSNBC.
Funny…you weren’t concerned about imagery when West and Smiley sat on stage with Arianna Huffington and other right wing white folks, bad mouthing President Obama.
Sharpton, a man not known to back down from anyone, defended his positions well and also challenged those who “sit in the ivory tower” and talk without much action (I do not consider Cornel West to be one of those people; he believes what he says and acts on it).
How does West “act on it”? Can you name at least five instances where West has ACTIVELY made change in the Black community?
My perception is that Cornel is coming from a genuine place. I cannot say the same about Tavis Smiley, who seemed to have a problem with Barack Obama’s disrespect toward him during the 2008 presidential election.
Revisionist history. President Obama not being able to attend Tavis’ State of the Black Union address because of a prior campaign event that was scheduled, does not constitute disrespect. However, Tavis dismissing Michelle Obama as a a fill-in for then candidate Obama IS disrespectful.
He is also correct to note that the administration has been slow to readily acknowledge African American suffering.
No, he is not. Ever heard of these?
– Passed Health Care Reform which is disproportionally helping Black people afford healthcare
– Student Loan reform
– Finance Reform, including regulating “pay day loans”
– Increased funding for HBCUs
– The Fair Sentencing Act of 2010
– The Credit Card Act that regulates predatory practices
…etc.
Instead of counting how many times President Obama says “African American” or “Black”, you’d see what the man is DOING for our community. But if you did that, you wouldn’t be able to write for the Huffington Post.
Women’s groups, the gay community and the Latino community have gotten high priority from the Obama Administration, but African Americans remain at the back of the bus when it comes to our primary concerns,
Where is your proof to substantiate your claims? Boyce, you continuously throw accusations against this administration but you NEVER provide evidence to back them up!
including mass incarceration and growing unemployment rates of over 15 percent.
Double digit employment didn’t begin on 1/20/2009. In fact, unemployment has ALWAYS disproportionately affected the Black community, but NOW you have so much to say?
Second
According to a recent survey conducted at YourBlackWorld.com, 34.4% of black respondents said that President Obama failed to meet their expectations after being elected.
Interesting that you didn’t link to the actual survey results. That means that you have something to hide, like how many people were surveyed and how many people approve of POTUS. But you will do and say anything to keep appearing on Fox News and Huffington Post. Afterall, being a Black critic of Obama pays very well.
What a cruel game you so called black leaders are engaged in as it relates to addressing issues that disportionately affect black people. Black people are suffering under the policies of this Black President while you black leaders are shuffle about allowing youselves to be reinvented like the rev Al Sharpton front cover of the News week magazine reinvented so that your company with this oppressive black President will somehow be acceptable in thy sight while still courting the good favor of all black people. One of the ways that those disciples of Jesus were revealed having betrayed him was when he asked of them who do you say that I am? another way was revealed when others who knew him also remembered that they also were with him and the last thing that revealed their betrayal was the 30 pieces of silver if you want to know who the black judases are simply follow the script.
@Mojr.
You make a great point I’ll support a 100 out of a 100 chances. But that’s not the point. No matter how much we pursue our interest, we need the government to create an atmosphere of fairness for each American.
Getting back to the topic.
I’m with Mr. West. As powerful interests continue using the president, Obama is using Sharpton., and Mr Watkins can’t call out his friend Sharpton. So what if Tavis Smiley feels disrespected. If Obama was taking steps to fulfill his mandate Mr Smiley would have nothing negative to say, and if he did with no evidence to back up his criticism he’d look like a fool. Rather than bring up how he felt burned over 2yrs ago, how about you speak on how disappointing/ineffective/deceitful Obama has been in office over the same period?
With your conclusion, your agenda is clear, you’d rather take the road that doesn’t offend either Mr. West or Mr. Sharpton. Thanks for muddling the argument. Disappointing but not surprising.
” sitting around and hoping that President Obama will look out for our interests is not nearly as effective as pursuing our interests ourselves”
This statement alone sums up what need to be done. Our communities are in need of leaders that can be a part of the solution in addressing our issues. Mr West, Jessie Jackson, Smiley, Sharpton and others should come up with remedies and stay off of the TV with their foolishness. The whole Black Agenda seminars and conferences put on every year never address solutions. Only who can yell or talk the loudest about nothing-our neighboodhoods are dying. President Obama is not the problem- lack of leaders, representatives or civil rights advocates for the communities that can articulate and provide leadership on blacks issues such as crime, educations, healthcare, proverty, etc are needed.
