(ThyBlackMan.com) Businessman, talk show host and political activist Herman Cain was the runaway winner in a presidential straw poll at the Tea Party weekend summit in Phoenix this February. Tea Party leaders almost to a person said Cain “resonated” with them because he embodied what they want to see for the country, and race had nothing to do with their choice of him to be their 2012 presidential standard bearer.
The pick and subsequent gushing over Cain is a carbon copy of the ancient ploy of ultra-conservatives. They handpick an African-American, shower him or her with praise, make them a fixture on conservative talk shows, give them carte blanche in newspaper columns, spotlight them at their dinners and banquets, and shove bushels of right wing think tank dollars into their pockets. During the Reagan years, a small but noisy clique of black conservatives, including Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell, Alan Keyes, were cultivated and hyped up as authentic black thinkers, activists, and political leaders. There were two requirements they had to fulfill to maintain their position as conservative darlings. The first was to criticize welfare, corporate taxes, government spending (sans military spending), abortion and gay rights. The second was to relentlessly attack civil rights organizations, leaders, and programs. In 2007, a third rite of passage was added. That was to assail then Democratic presidential candidate Obama, and in 2008, following his election to ratchet up the vitriol.
The election of Michael Steele as RNC chair in 2009 was a thinly disguised effort by GOP conservatives to shove a black man into a high profile, top political spot as a counter to Obama. Steele was a conservative who could be relied on to nitpick and ridicule all of Obama’s policies and programs. And since the attacks came from another black man who could say that there was even a trace of racial animus in the attacks? It was just politics, nothing more.
It didn’t really work with Steele. His profligate spending, penchant for controversy, shoot-from-the-lips quips, and media hogging, simply ticked off to many within the party. He had to go, and he did. But the pattern didn’t change; namely hunt up a dependable, core of fresh black faces who could be quickly elevated to national media prominence, gushed over at party confabs, praised for their willingness to attack civil rights leaders, liberal Democrats, and of course President Obama.
The 2010 mid-term elections and the aftermath was a racial treasure trove for the GOP and Tea Party. They got not one, not two, but three telegenic, articulate, media and politically savvy African-Americans. Allen West, Tim Scott and now Cain can all pump out the standard line: that big government, high taxes, and fiscal irresponsibility by tax and spend Democrats are evils that Americans, and that includes African-Americans, should be up in arms about. They will hammer on these themes, and along the way hammer Obama, with little risk that their Obama-bashing can be construed as a thinly disguised cover to vent and spew racism against the president.
West, Scott and Cain, and a handful of avowedly black conservative groups almost certainly will be pushed even more front and center in the media and in conservative political circles as election 2012 heats up. West was cheered wildly at the Conservative Political Action Conference and hailed as the paragon of political sense on taxes, spending, and meat axing alleged too expansive government domestic programs. Cain makes even more sense for the Tea Party. He is the ready answer to anyone who still slams the movement as racist. He gives the Tea Party luster as a conservative group that has absolutely no qualms about making an African-American its titular standard bearer.
Cain has burnished his credentials as the perfect foil to Obama, and the answer to those who call the Tea Party racist. In his speech to at the Tea Party summit, he boasted that he had the guts and moxie to tell Bill Clinton to his face at a public meeting during the 1993 health care debate that he thought government involvement in health care management was a rotten idea. Since then he’s made a virtual one man crusade out of pushing for a national sales tax to radically reduce reliance on federal taxes. Nevermind that a fair tax would be anything but fair, and would be a regressive tax that would hurt small wage earners who will pay the same for goods and services as the wealthy. Or that the absence of any government role in health care would leave tens of thousands more to the un-tender mercies of the private health care market, and insure that tens of millions including millions of lower income whites would remain without any access to affordable health care.
No matter, Cain, West and Scott today, and small legion of black conservatives from days gone by give conservative’s cachet without ever challenging the racism that still pulses underneath of what passes as conservatism. That’s their job.

@Cornel – Yes, your 100% right! I don’t have a problem with black conservatives who are intelligent and sensible but the ignorant ones need to go. Your examples of Keyes and Cain hit the mark. There’s a difference between black and white conservatives, most white conservatives are Klan cheerleaders. They want the good old days when lynching a black man and raping black women was a sport and past time to them. Most of these ignorant black conservatives are filled with self hate and will do or say anything to please their white masters, they feel they might receive some cushy job or position if they do their bidding. They are truly a disgrace to all decent people everywhere
One last point: These right wing whites, and right wing Blacks, try to label progressive Blacks, who speak out against the injustices which still exist in this nation, as “racists.” One thing is for sure, whites are in no position whatsoever to label a Black person as a racist. Black people never told white people that they had to go to the back of the bus, Black people never told white people that you can’t vote. Black people never told white people that you can’t go to this school, go to this movie theater, eat at this restaurant, because you are white. Black people never did these things.
Just because a Black person is suspicious of whites, due to their experiences with whites in the past, does not make a Black a racist. Is a European Jew a hater because he does not trust the motives of a Nazi? He has a right not to trust the motives of a Nazi, because of what they did to his people.
White people, and Black Uncle Remus Negroes, who try to convey the impression that there is a common means to rate Blacks that distrust whites, with Whites that are paranoid and distrust Blacks, are ridiculous. One group hates the other group simply because of the color of their skin, the other group may harbor animus against whites because of what whites did to them. Big difference, and that doesn’t make a Black a racist.
I have had white associates in the past, and liked them, until they pulled that “Nigger” word test on me. That’s when Whites utter the word, “Nigger,” to see how you react to it.
Their famous ploy is to say, “You know, there are White Niggers, and there are Black Niggers.” That’s their favorite analysis. What in the hell does that mean????? I do not like the word, “Nigger,” don’t use it, did not grow up in a household where it was used, and I resent these young Blacks using it.
But why do whites always test a Black reaction to the word by using it?
And as the writer so eloquently stated, the danger of these Yessuh Negroes is that whites are using them against Obama. How could a Black person, with any integrity, allow himself to be used like this? Are such Negroes so avaricious for a buck, that they allow themselves to be the 21st Century Stephin Fetchit’s?
Notice another thing about these so called Negro Conservatives. They always say that other Blacks constantly use the Race Card, but let them get in hot water, and they will pull the Race Card out of their pockets in a New York Minute. Even without getting in trouble, they use it all the time to attack other Blacks.
They try to give the impression that Blacks who are progressive, and haven’t aligned themselves with the modern KKK (Tea Party) are somehow, “still on the plantation” as Allen West, a notorious Uncle Remus, put it on FOX News. And notice how these Toms always only address all white audiences?
Such Negroes are hard to psychologically assess. One thing is for sure, again, they are messed up in the head with the self hatred thing. Should we be surprised that they are so bold and vocal?
No. But these are the kind of Negroes who would have fought on the side of the South during the Civil War.
Another factor, which proves how phony these Negro Uncle Remus banjo plucking grinning shuffling watermelon seed spitting yessuh boys are, is that they all praise Ronald Reagan. Can you imagine that? They bash Obama, and praise Ronald Reagan.
Now Ronald Reagan has been the beneficially of the greatest revisionist history canard in the history of politics. Over 135 members of the Reagan Administration were indicted, or forced to resign for crimes.
Reagan increased the national debt by 187%. America’s books were basically balanced before this fraud took office.
And this scum Reagan literally sold weapons to the terrorist nation of Iran in the 80s, in a violation of the U.S. Arms Export Munitions Control Act, and the 1979 U.S. Arms Embargo against Iran (read the book, Firewall by Lawrence Walsh, the REPUBLICAN Special Prosecutor who was assigned to investigate Iran Contra by the Reagan Administration, a REPUBLICAN).
Reagan was a liar (November 6, 1986: “We have not, repeat, exchanged weapons for hostages nor shall we”) and was endorsed by the KKK in 1980 and again, in 1984, Yet, these Negro Uncle Remus conservative Blacks laud this phony, and literally brag about him around white people.
Reagan also vetoed the Trade Sanctions Act against apartheid South Africa in 1986, met with the Congressional Black Caucus only twice, despite numerous requests, bashed Martin Luther King before grudgingly signing off on his birthday to be a national holiday and overall, made white people feel comfortable about their racism. Yet these Uncle Remus Negro so called conservatives, in order to get in good with Mastah, praise Ronald Reagan, and go along with the right wing revisionist history on this bubble brain.
You Negro Conservatives should just shut your mouths, let your white mastah throw you a banana every now and then, and quit getting mad when folks call you out for what you are.
I grew up in a business family. My father was a highly successful businessman and my mother also worked in the company. Everyone in my family is educated, and no one has gone to jail. But we are not Uncle Toms.
My father, a WW2 veteran, always told me what the conservative whites were all about. He knew them, he faced and challenged them. He knew that they did not support the civil rights movement, he knew that they all had, deep down, anti-Black sentiment.
Now, I do not denounce a Black Republican. Edward Brooks, the great former Black senator from Mass., was a very decent man. But one must understand, these are NOT conservatives nowadays, these are RIGHT WINGERS.
Herman Cain is a disgrace, so is Alan Keyes, Clarence Thomas, etc. And notice one thing about these most radical Black so-called Republicans or Conservatives, they are all really dark. Very swarthy Black people. And they affiliate themselves with whites that basically hate Blacks.
Why do they do it? It’s a self hatred thing, for the most part. They’re black, ugly, and speak in Geechie like dialogues, with the exception of Alan Keyes, who is so phony, that his own daughter is a lesbian.
And Armstrong Williams, another so-called Black conservative, is a homosexual, clearly outlined in the book by David Brook called, “Blinded by the Right.” These are Black men that are psychologically deranged.
It’s a self hatred thing, and the article was right on the point and well written.
This writer is a racist A-hole. How dare he assume that any minority that is a conservative power player is a sell out! A person’s thoughts are not dependent on their race. Also those “Requirements” are required for any conservative.
I dare say the writer is racist
