A true celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday requires material justice, not patriotic myths; disentanglement of the branches of government from political minority rule; and resistance to Christian nationalists forcing their vision of what American is, who is considered a “real” American, and the institutional support for racism baked into the Declaration of Independenced and the Constitution of the United States.

It takes time to rid a black person’s mind of white brain washing. Hundreds of years of this kind of white brainwashing shows up in the strangest ways in those whom we love dearly. A close friend of mine once said to me that she wasn’t going to let me take her Jesus. Her Jesus was white. Black people still need more education, and more belief in themselves.
