Back in the day I was a chapter rep for the GMWA and eventually I worked for Westbound/SOG Records I saw a lot of James Cleveland firsthand he really was the undisputed King of Gospel Music. Growing up in Chicago we could tell when someone in the neighborhood lost a loved one because they would be playing, I Stood on the banks of Jordan on the phonograph. I also recall an incident at the GMWA in Cleveland I was backstage Andre Crouch had sung also the Hawkins Family as well as other singers. While they were well received and appreciated no one as they used to say, "Got the House". After all of them had done their best James Cleveland turned around and said, "Now I'm going to show ya'll why I sing Gospel Music" He went on stage and started singing "We'll go sweeping through the city" and pandemonium hit the auditorium like someone had struck a match and started a fire. Thank you for posting about James Cleveland I don't believe anyone today comes close to his influence.
