I am so glad that R Kelly is being held accountable at long last, and that protecting a predator in the name of racial loyalty has not worked for him. I can see the point about his being underdeveloped, but it is worth mentioning that he was enabled by a pathological degree of celebrity worship, a badly misplaced racial solidarity that has prioritized even problematic black men over black women and children, a music industry that cares about profit over people, and by his employees who either facilitated his seeking out victims or looked the other way when he was abusing them. He was doing all this until he was arrested at age 52, and has since been tried, convicted, and sentenced to 30 years of imprisonment. He must have thought his 2008 acquittal made him untouchable because he got even worse. It is sickening to see grown men and women still defending the indefensible because they obviously think his musical talent outweighs the well-being of his victims in importance.

Parish, you make your point most convincingly, and also reveal the fact that it is a combination of legislated law, theological morality, and mental inventions of the psychiatric community that help to define the legal and illegal sexual behaviors of grown folk and children in America.I have observed that some American women and men have had, and continue to have a hard time defining their femininity and their masculinity, but I am somewhat reluctant to believe that R. Kelly is an “example of black male mental underdevelopment.” I think that Kelly is a product of his capitalist sociopolitical environment which encourages the victimization of the very young and the very old.Kelly’s conduct may be found to be criminal, but it is not at all new when we consider the history of our civilization.

Mental dysfunction is common in black communities. Your article ruthlessly roasts black men over hot coals, but you don’t ask why most black females prefer men who behave that way over the ones who don’t.
