MAYOR BOTTOMS DOES NOT UNDERSTAND crime prevention nor public safety. Neither was ever designed to be exclusively nor primarily a police function. That is why she is at a loss. That’s why she recently stated on CNN that she didn’t know the answers and many times didn’t even know the questions to ask. That is why she does not know what to do just as former Chief Shields didn’t know either.

In 2013 the Metro Atlanta Crime Commission reached out to Keisha Lance Bottoms when she was on the Atlanta City Council with information, a plan and strategic solutions. She didn’t give any of it the time of day. Obviously she was not mayor then but she was an advisor to Kasim Reed and he didn’t listen either.

The Metro Atlanta Crime Commission again reached out to Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms 3 times in 2019 and 3 times in 2020, to no avail on any occasion. And I guess we should not feel bad because she does not listen to the very Atlanta Citizen Review Board that was created expressly to deal with problems between citizens and police either. Nor is the community oriented policing unit of the Atlanta Police Department held accountable for doing their jobs to impact the community in the way they were created to do.

Instead who does she listen to? TI, “Killer” Mike, Reverend Bernice King and others who apparently have no solutions or the problems would not be as they are. And if you are not getting improvements or the results you need, it may very well be because you are not listening to the right people with the right answers and the right approach. That is poor decision-making, poor leadership and therefore poor results.

We suggest that this city learn about what we do. We have worked with the Atlanta Police Department and other departments, civic leaders, clergy, citizens, local city and political officials. We are not novices.

Even the Mayor’s most recent advisory council contains over half of the people who do not have a clue as to how to resolve the problem of excessive force and how broad the scope in addressing police reform needs to be.
