America is, on the one hand, great, and on the other hand, deficient. Slavery, the subjugation of Native Americans, Jim Crow and a long list of other deficiencies, falls on the negative side. Democracy, Social Security, Medicare, the Civil Rights Act, Brown v Board of Education, the campaign against Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Imperial Japan, along with the USSR, fall on the plus side. Today, we are losing the battle to the oligarchs. Beginning with Ronald Reagan, the war on the unions has reduced the vast middle class so that about forty percent of the population lives paycheck-to-paycheck. The wealthy (having purchased the loyalty of Republican politicians) have plundered the Social Security reserves and granted themselves trillions in handouts. Republicans are waging a war against democracy with their voter suppression campaigns. Trump, if there is anything good to say about him, might be the wakeup call that Middle America needed to take back our country.

The summits are a great beginning. However, we must remember that creating more minority businesses requires depth and knowledge of the government and its systems. Academic-industrial partnerships are critical to the development of new minority enterprises. Minority business development systems need to be evaluated and updated. It needs to move away from one’s minority status to producing products and services required in the global economy. We can have minority-owned Microsoft’s Apple’s, billion dollar companies versus today’s million dollar companies. It requires the expansion of research and planning dollars that the minority community does not receive. Let’s be unreasonable and get our fair share of all Federal investments.

You mean the President who was depicted as a dead gorilla when it came to the ACA? The President who had someone call his wife an ape in heels?

I could go on and on, but let’s not confuse progress with “we are there”…
