As noted by Pelvo in his comment, subliminality passes through to the hidden conscious, and lay in the characters and their names, Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed, as well as the Bicentennial, beyond the obvious inspiration of past portrayals.
Rocky Balboa represent ancient Serpent worship, for the character, left-handed, is Italian (Papacy) and Roman Catholic, a servant faith. Christ placed his Church upon Simon Peter ‘Rock.’ Boa is a type of snake. Baal was a false god of child sacrifice. Jezebel, wife of Ahab, King of Israel prophesied against by Elijah, is representative of fornication, idolatry, false prophets and witness. Christ is the child sacrifice offered to the world serpent, the Oroboros. The old world was plunged into Dark Ages to cleanse it of its hubris and iniquity.
Apollo Creed represents the ancient mysteries and enlightenment. The ancient Apollonian Creed is to ‘Know Thyself.’ He represents the counter punch, the shadow self. Each character represents two sides of a whole respectively, as they spar they become stronger until they unite as one. That is the revolutionary spirit of the enlightened, and in essence, America as well.

Subliminal means “(of a stimulus or mental process); below the threshold of sensation or consciousness; perceived by or affecting someone’s mind without their being aware of it.Rocky movies have been very successful in this regard because they go to the very core of American universal thought about how to advance in our society, and in the world. These thoughts are perpetuated through the supposed lifestyle of Italian Americans. Most Americans love to see “the under dog fighting hard to win, and eventually succeeding “. This is an American universal theme that permeates the entire society.We are taught to study hard in school, learn well,find our place in this society, and do well by earning lots of money in our chosen profession.These movies take a dumb, but adorable Italian punching bag named Rocky,train him well as a boxer, let him get used, and beat up by others doing better than himself, and eventually letting him win the fight to the glee of those rooting for him.These movies support a belief in the ultimate success of “the under dog”, not only in America, but also in the world.
