The "sickest" thing about this entire premise is that it is postulated by an MD who blithely ignores the culpability of the medical industrial complex/establishment in enriching itself while quality of life and life expectancy have plummeted for all Americans.
I recommend "The Danger Within us" by Jeanne Lenzer, Maya Dusenbery's "Doing Harm," and a book called "The Medical Malpractice Myth" for anyone genuinely interested in doing anything serious to improve healthcare.
As for racial culpability of an entire generation, I don't accept the "good" doctor's moral supremacy or ability to measure souls or even attempt objectivity.
Dying while white is not the same as being racist, & doctors who blame suicide victims should not be allowed near anyone vulnerable, i.e. patients.
Frontline recently showed staggeringly high death prates from a new & vicious type of black lung. WV was traditionally a liberal state with an amazing history of fighting for workers rights. Coal mining has been domestic colonialism & coal miners have been abused, underpaid, & maligned. Until the left is honest about its own failure to address workers rights or safety it will continue to lose support from poor rural communities. It is heartbreaking that no one is willing to acknowledge that this facile political schadenfreude is classic (though it is adorned in new clothes) victim blaming.
