Mr. Brown; Please revisit your Latin Grammar books and observe that Latin words ending in " a " are feminine not masculine, therefore not suitable for naming a male. A male with a female name is confusing. Please observe that giving an African American child that is not Hebrew a Hebrew name may cause confusion in the child and others who are Hebrew.A name carries certain negative and positive connotations. To date,Hebrew and Christian naming of African Americans connotes more their parent' acceptance of Christian doctrines instead of what was originally meant by names. There should be nothing more definitive and exacting than a proper name.Taking the names of ancient Hebrews and Christians only serve to remind others that this is a person who prefers to name themselves the names originating in other nations and cultures. In ancient American history a slave or freedman or woman converted to Christianity was given a new name like Ruth,Samuel, Solomon,Mark, or Phillip to indicate that they were saved or for the most part safe to interact with.We have much to search out concerning the manner in which white folk named black folk, and how black folk adopted the white folk manner in naming black folk. There are many in my family with Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and Christian names.
