I have to say that this article is an eye opener and very congruent to what I experienced growing up on the South Side of Chicago. I could remember being challenged vigorously by my peers for the reasons why I attended college, and what benefits (mainly monetary gain) college really had to offer. I can recall an incident with one of my peers that not only made me contemptuous, but it also made me self-conscience to be honest. We were watching ESPN and an analyst (I can't recall his name but it's the light-skinned freckled faced brotha) was giving commentary and my friend made the comment, "ol gay ass nigga," but I wasn't sure what prompted him to say this. He went on to say that he was basing it on his tone of voice and vernacular, which would imply that any male who speaks with articulation and diction must be a homosexual. Although it made me look at my brotha side ways for such ignorance, it made me wonder how he viewed me since I was capable of speaking intellectually as well.
