From experience, I would suggest that along with distributing food they help residents start a community garden. This can have multiple benefits–fresh food, time spent outdoors, getting to know neighbors, young people socializing with older people (and both the young and old getting to know those of the other generation as individuals rather than just part of a group), and satisfaction at having started a project, seen it to completion, and reaped a tangible benefit from the effort.

But even it that fit this situation, it’s heartening to see young people giving back to the community!
