Make all the schools better? That’s what the school vouchers and charter schools would do. The real reason so many schools are doing such a bad job at educating their students is that they’re the only game in town–no competition. If parents had the option of pulling their kids out of the bad schools and sending them to schools that do a better job, the bad schools would either have to improve or close. What’s wrong with that? Oh, and “leaving children behind?” Where did you see that the school vouchers would only go to a certain subset of students? That just isn’t what anyone’s talking about.

Education is a privilege, not a right. By pushing charter schools, the system promotes schools where are the desirable kids go but leaves the other school desolate when it comes to the best teachers. Life is not like that. Plus good students and poor students still live generally in the same neighborhoods and interact. Especially in the cases of the straight A girl who like the bad boy about to flunk out.

Make all the schools better and raise the standard instead of creating a new standard somewhere else while leaving children behind. And if the time and energy are invested in the academically deficient student, you never know what they may become. Charter schools give up on mediocre or poor students and public education should not do that.
