McEnroe didn’t say anything remotely similar to what Riggs did. McEnroe simply said Serena wouldn’t make it on the men’s tour, more or less. I guarantee you most people in the sport agree with that sentiment.

I am old enough to remember Bobby Riggs saying something similar about then female tennis champ Billy Jean King which in the end turned out to be a publicity stunt to generate a match between himself and King. Could this be a replay? As for the match between Riggs and King, the lady soundly beaten him. But what did he care? He got paid, big time.

It is IMPOSSIBLE that Serena would be a top ten player in men’s professional tennis. We can estimate how good she would be because she plays with hitting partners who are male, and who dial down their games against her. We can also estimate because there are universal tennis ratings, which put Serena around the level of a male college tennis player.

“Ultimately, comparing Serena Williams as the best female tennis player of all-time as it relates to contemporary men’s tennis players is an insult to her because her resume far surpasses all men’s tennis players currently playing not named Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, or Novak Djokovic.” So who insulted Serena, McEnroe, or the interviewer who challenged him by saying “Some would say she is the best player ever”?

Since when does opining on a subject mean the opinion has to be scientifically proven? McEnroe also said Williams could beat some men–also an unproven statement–but strangely nobody complained about that.

Serena’s accomplishments are great but the interviewer tried to get McEnroe to call her the best player ever regardless of sex. There is a reason the sexes don’t play each other.
