You've hit on one of the major problems of our time, Raynard. The federal government is too big, and controls too much of our society. In fact, I sometimes call it the "feral" government, as it completely ignores the restrictions the Constitution puts on it. Unfortunately, the federal government will never voluntarily reduce its size and control, even when its proven that it has no authority to exercise that control. There's only one option available to us as American citizens to restrain the federal government and get it back to its constitutional limits (well, one non-violent option). That's convening an Article V (of the Constitution) convention to propose amendments. Such a convention is called for by 2/3s of the state legislatures--the federal government has no say in its convening. The convention would then propose amendments just as Congress does, and if 3/4s of the state legislatures ratify them they become part of the Constitution. Again, the federal government has no say in this.

At this time, 10 state legislatures have called for such a convention, and the resolution calling for the convention is before the legislatures of at least 34 more states. I encourage you all to learn more about this movement and to support it if you agree with it.
