While I do agree Eminem is of the greatest dead or alive and may be unmatched lyrically, I also think much of his success is due to his skin color. I know, I know, I'm playing the race card here but hear me out. Many rappers before Eminem have displayed exceptional story telling ability, most of which being grown up in a ghetto area and having to vent their frustration through music for fans to hear. The problem here was, nobody could relate to them. People with mainstream, suburban lives wouldn't pay mind to the music because they just wouldn't fully appreciate where the lyrics originated. There was no connection between the average citizen (white or black) who lived a normal life. NOW, when Eminem came up, not only did he have the skin color that most people were surprised enough to pay mind to, but he had the idea to be the clown of the rap game. He had that "fuck it" attitude that almost anyone could relate to, whether you grew up in a ghetto area or not. Even though Eminem is a lyrical mastermind who hasn't been stomped yet, I believe if he was black, his career wouldn't have left the ground for everyone would have grouped him up with the mainstream "gangster" rappers
