I think one of the big problems with our discussions about racial progress is that we tend to maintain extreme positions. It is true that Blacks in America should have never expected President Obama to solve all of their problems, but it is equally incorrect to ignore to the constant, intentional, and persistent marginalization of Blacks by the dominant culture when it comes to providing genuinely equal opportunity.

The real problem is we fell for the subterfuge of integration. We abandoned our businesses and our institutions to become a part of the Dominant culture. We ceased being a people and became a collection of individuals. It's to bad none of the other races view us only as individuals. Try applying for a job working for another ethnic minority in this country. This weakened our people significantly because we no longer held any common economic interest. We have no longer any incentive or compulsion to pool our resources. It's everyman for himself.

Maybe if we weren't so disconnected, maybe if we had real communities instead of neighborhoods, we would have a general code of conduct that most of us would feel compelled to follow.

By the way, I don't believe that Black people should have expected President Obama to accomplish virtually nothing toward their benefit in 6 years either.

I am really disappointed with the indifference he has shown regarding the violence in the streets of Chicago.

Eric,

The numbers and data that you continue to use are all inflated. With regards to the market it will adjust to its real condition when the feds stop dumping billions every month into it and interest rates go up. That has been going on for the past 8 years to put off the inevitable. Essentially your beloved president has done nothing different than his predecessor. I notice you never touched on unwarranted spying, the NSA, the NDAA, the patriot act, and the Monsanto protection act that were all signed while America was sleeping. So much for the transparent government that we were promised, and with regards to the unemployment numbers, they are b.s. , you know if they calculated the numbers the same way they did in the 80’s they would be much higher. If you don’t believe me, do your own research and answer me these questions; how many people from the ages of 25-55 are out of work, how many are black, and how many of those jobs are minimum wage.

Im sorry I look around and really don’t see anything different than the previous 8 years, maybe its because they both are doing the same things and the only difference is one happened to be white and one is black. And with the state sanctioned genocide that you talk about, well you tend to get killed when you shoot at and assault police. And all the false mourning that takes place every time one of these thugs steps out of line makes me sick. Yeah, the people were real upset, I saw smiles and laughter as they ransacked businesses owned by other black people and destroying their own infrastructure. We act that way and wonder why we are never taken seriously or why businesses will not hire us or invest in our communities.

With regards to cornel, you are the only guy that brings him up. I discuss a lot of issues with a lot of people and I have to say you are the only guy that continues to make him relevant.

Look, what the author has done here is disingenuous to some extent. Nevertheless, this piece begs for a way to truly judge the success or non-success of the Obama administration in a fair and equitable manner. Let us see if we can do that.

The reason I say the piece is somewhat disingenuous is because the author only uses national statistics on a web site named ThyBlackman.com. You would think the author might have used black statistics to make his points. However, the national statistics look a lot better when you exclude black employment and wealth statistics. (African Americans have literally suffered seven years of double-digit unemployment during Mr. Obama’s presidency while whites have seen their rates fall to single digits. As a matter of fact their unemployment rate is almost normal at 4.9 percent for November).

ThyBlackman.com in its “About Statement” says, “This blog was created to unite black men and remind us of our brotherhood and value as men in this society…“ This site is here to remind us that there are many, many positive things to talk about in us as black men.” Yet in writing about blacks, the author writes about black men and indeed black people in the most negative way. This is an attempt to contrast what he sees as our negativity with what he concedes are the positives of Mr. Obama’s record. It is a familiar tactic use by the Obama administration and it supporters, and that is, blame blacks for being poor, disadvantaged and unemployed. If these African Americans will stop doing this or stop doing that, their economic position would improve immediately is the message.

In other words there is nothing for the federal government to do, as it has done for other constituencies ( Examples are what the federal government has done for other constituencies specifically are: 1) wealthy mostly whites and their corporations have been given several tax cuts by Republican administrations through legislation which changed taxation laws; 2) Hispanics have benefited from executive orders and 3) the gay community has benefited from this president literally leading the charge in gay rights). Here are a couple examples of what I am talking about when it comes to blacks and what they need to do without bothering the president, and the federal government:

“First, many of us in the Black community have a pronounced tendency to follow self-serving poverty pimps and fools instead of thinking for ourselves,”
(As if this is a malady suffered by “all” blacks)

“A perfect example of the first dysfunction is many of us literally worship people like Cornel West.”
(As if blacks worship at the shrine of Cornel West - Surely if we can just stop doing this, we ought to be able see how this can lower our current 11.1 percent unemployment rate a point or two which increased in November from 10.9 percent; the unemployment rate for black men also increased from 10.7 percent to 11.2 percent and black women saw an increase to 9.6 percent from 9.4 percent).

As far as the statistics the author threw up showing how the economy has improved, voters just don’t buy it and said so in the last mid-term elections by roundly defeating the president’s party in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The voters judged that Mr. Obama and his economic advisors failed in the category of the economy. The author and the folks who “like” this piece might do themselves and all of us who live in “the real world” a favor and read my piece which states some of the reasons why this recovery is not seen as genuine.
http://thyblackman.com/2014/11/10/3-reasons-why-the-current-economic-recovery-will-fail/

Many of us love this president and want to see him go out in “A BLAZE OF GLORY,” however we know he needs to fix this economy. To Mr. Obama and all the folks in Obamaland, I have said this for last four years, PLEASE PUT A LEGITIMATE JOB CREATION PLAN ON THE TABLE. This is what the public cries for, a job creation plan that will finally bring the 2008 Downturn to an end.
