I remember him myself, and I do know that he did a lot of good in his
52 years of life. The media does not acknowledge people like him enough but is quick to highlight negative behavior among black folks. Of course, that kind of omission gives a distorted picture to folks who don’t know many of us. It’s the same kind of thinking that highlights the murder rate in Chicago, for example, without also highlighting the heroic efforts among individuals and organizations in combating it. Those combined efforts have led to fewer homicides in that city. As one official there said, it’s progress but not victory. Mr. Bridges should be honored whenever black history is celebrated, along with many others who haven’t gotten the recognition they deserve.
