The people against legal migration (Tea Party)are the type of people who fought with the same misguided passion as the ones who fought for the "Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882". That was not that long ago, we'r talking about peoples Grandparents and Great-Grandparents, here. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was in place until repealed by the still very restrictive, Magnuson Act in 1943. These Chinese immigrants did the dangerous backing jobs in mining, agriculture, canneries, fishing and lumber milling. They built the most treacherous sections of the railroads from the Northwest US to the rail head coming from the East Coast. This hard work went mostly unappreciated, because of the racism and strife, it provoked as Patriotic groups began to react violently to the Chinese willingness to work cheaper then the going rate. Newspapers at the time detailed, when Seattle mobs herded the city's 350 Chinese residents to the wharf and onto a waiting steamship. Descendents of these immigrants can now boast of the first Chinese-American Governor and the Ambassador to China.
