You know, it kind of Ironic. The world didn’t even know Elder Hampton. He was a “nobody,” yet he had a lasting influence on my life – even though I was only exposed to him for a year – while the Pastor who baptized me in the “Big Church,” and was a big shot in the Southern Baptist Convention, who was always rubbing shoulders and on television with Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and who had Hank Jacobs and Billy Taylor playing organ in his church, and who I was exposed to for several years, ran me right out of the church when I was only about 14 years old. Even at that tender age I saw that pastor as an arrogant, pompous, and self-absorbed windbag.

My grandparents were devout Christians, and my grandfather was a strong Black man and the absolute head of the family. Everybody danced to his music – even the men who married into the family. When he said something it was LAW right up until the day he died, so I NEVER disobeyed him – accept in one area. At 14 years old I left that church and refused to step foot in it, or any other church(except to attend funerals)ever again, and that was that. Period, and end of story.

When I seek God, I look within, not to other men.

About Religion

I keep life simple by keeping man, or any philosophy other than my own contemplations, completely out of my spirituality. All religions are cults, and they’re all various forms of “voodoo.”
.
I believe that God, Nature, and the Universe are all one and the same. So whatever force is responsible for what we call “existence,” as far as I’m concerned, is God, and that force provided us with everything we need to survive.
.
In short, every person was created to be completely self-contained. Thus, we no more need a “user’s guide” to navigate our way through life than birds need a calendar and compass to know when, and in which direction to fly south for the winter.
.
Our religious beliefs are purely an accident of birth. If I had been born in Israel, I would have been indoctrinated into the Jewish religion. If I had been born in Iraq, my religion would have been totally different, or China, different still. So the fact is, religion is more about regional politics than it is God. Man needs a way of controlling the minds of the people in his community, and religion is that way – “If you don’t believe what I tell you to believe, the Bogeyman is going to get you.”

Thus, there are only two kinds of people in the world – good people, and bad people. And even those who are bad are not “evil” – they’re simply ignorant.
.
It would be interesting if when we died there was a big sign at Heaven’s gate saying,
“ATTENTION ALL! DON’T WORRY, THE ONLY WAY YOU’LL GO TO HELL IS IF YOU TRY TO LIE TO GOD.”
Then once we got to the front of the line God asked each of us just one question: “Do you REALLY believe that a snake spoke to Eve?”

I wonder how many Christians would say yes.

AS a ATHIEST I try to avoid religous subjects ;however like most black AMERICANS I was raised in the church;and almost everyone I know and love including my children are CHRISTIANS.I also understand that black AMERICANS are not going to give up CHRISTIANITY anytime soon.WHEN I comment on religion I try to be positive;although like most aspects of black AMERICA’S life there is not lot of good to talk about.WE black AMERICAN’S are not holding are religous or political leaders acountable to us.I advise black CHRISTIANS to look at other people and how they used the power of their religion to change the condition of their people.THE;JEWS ;CATHOLICS and MORMONS are just a few examples for us to learn from. I don’t think it’s too much to ask of our religous institutions to do for us what other people have recieved from theirs.WHEN I was in CHURCH; JESUS and the clergy who was his representation like ELDER HAMPTON mentioned by the author were servants. DR KING and MALCOLM X both died with little or no financial assets;in fact neither man owned the homes their families were living in at the time of their assassinations.THESE two men literally sacrificed everything they had for free.THE lesson of these men’s lives is that you don’t have to pay a real leader.WE should be ashamed of ourselves for making any of our religous leaders millionaires.

Go to any major city or even in some small cities and especially in the black community there is a mega church amongst extreme poverty. These days every pastor wants a “Mega Church” because that’s what they use to define their so-called greatness while only enriching themselves. It’s a sad reality, but it is the truth. We’ve got “mega churches” and still “mega problems.”
