Smh – I am not even surprised at some of the things mentioned in this article.
From the days of slavery until now, blacks have ALWAYS been the most vehement critics of their own.
NOTE: We are in season 2. Did you want her to develop all the characters at the the same time? I am sure we will get Olivia’s story some time soon.
Smh – black men just need to get over themselves. The bone of contention, I am sure, is just because Kerry Washington’s character is in love with a white man.

Shonda Rhimes said Eventually we will learn more about Olivia Pope’s background and Harrison’s background. So be patient. Why can people especialy women just watch a fictional TV show and not be accused of trying to live vicariously through Olivia Pope.

SMH. Another Black Man who has a problem with Scandal. What’s New? It is very funny how Black Men want to now promote morality and whatever esle just cause a Black Woman is in love with a White Man. I never thought I would see the day were African Americans would be so ignorant and narrowminded when it came to Interracial Relationships.
Olivia Pope is not Perfect. She is a complicated character.

Excellent review of an excellent show. I agree that it is encouraging to see a show with a strong, black woman that is able to recognized and become a role model. It is, perhaps somewhat harsh, but true that we (black folks) have a real identity crises that Scandal portrays very well. What is somewhat harsh, is that without creating a pure fantasy, It would not be any other way for Olivia. I like the observations about the lack of depth of the black characters history and motivations – to me that was the most significant point. It is often assumed that a black person is a book you can read only by looking at its cover. In other words: No depth is necessary, because no depth is there.
It seems to me that, as Brandon shows, that more background information and learning more about Olivia’s goals and ambitions, would transform Olivia into a true cultural icon; a woman, despite being a slave to a system she doesn’t control, still respects herself, lives by a set of standards, and knows the difference between love and manipulation. This show should still be respected for its honest portrayal and Olivia respected for the difficult part she plays in the system.

Let me first say I like the show and watch it but this still is an excellent acticle. I like the show for the realism and how some black women are so caught up in white america that they lose themselves. This show mirrors that perfectly. If these same women would be like this with black men ( real men not thugs), and their families then it would be alot more Michelle Obamas in america. Maybe not first ladies of the white house but first ladies in their homes with their good husbands who are Godly and take care of his family. Your success shouldn’t always be measured by what you do outside. Be successful at home, in your relationships and quit trying to uphold the same system that keeps up down. It may allow you to thrive as a individual but at what cost? The children and the men are being left behind. Thats why alot of so call successful women are single mothers or go home to a empty house. Thats not success

Don’t you LOVE how every time black WOMEN try to do something, black MEN always stand up and support us the way we do them? Oh right, they don’t. This article is a great example of that so keep it up ThyBlackMan, wouldn’t want you to go out of your way to say something positive about us. That is just unheard of. Smh… Scandal is an excellent show and Kerry Washington and the rest of the cast are phenomenal. If you’ve never seen the show, don’t let this boring long winded bunch of crap deter you. Watch it for yourself and judge. I don’t know anybody I’ve let borrow my Season 1 DVD who didn’t LOVE the show by the time the first ep was over :o)

I hope the real agenda of this article is not the crab in the barrel syndrom! It is easy to criticize a show and just write about it. Could you do a better job than Shonda Rhimes, we seriously doubt it!!! I hope your real goal is not to bash at successful Black women because you can’t stand to see them thrive!
