My God, versatile!

Don't bite your tongue. Say what's really on your mind. Lol!!! The only thing you said that I disagree with is it is Tavis that has brought West down. It all started the day that President Obama threw his hat in the ring to run for office in Illinois instead of coming on Tavis' "State of the Black Union" - that was happening the same day - to get Tavis' blessing (check out the link below).

But what’s revealing about Cornel’s character is, after having the hissy fit below - and jumping up and down on live television, saying that by not coming on Tavis’ show meant that Obama didn’t care about Black people - once it became clear that Obama could actually win, Cornel jumped the fence and did over 60 campaign appearances on Obama’s behalf. Then once it became clear that he wasn’t gonna get a position in the Obama administration, he jumped back over the fence, and started doggin’ him again. Cornel is a certified, self-serving, lunatic.

Well stated, Deeann.

The problem is, the minute we start to address these problem we'll invariably have someone complain that we're blaming the victim. We become so accustomed to having to defend ourselves that at this point we even defend our dysfunction, and refuse to face reality.

This is the only subject that my woman and I argue about. Every time I bring up an issue that our people needs to address, she tries to explain away our dysfunction by talking about our history, and how we developed the dysfunction. I keep telling her, I don't care how we got this way. All I care about is overcoming it.

Granted, we have been conditioned, but that doesn't mean that once a dysfunction is brought to our attention, that we're too dumb to correct it. Black people aren't sheep, so we should have the intellect to recognize our programming and change it.

That's why I'm always on Tavis and West, because their message is, everything is everybody else's fault but ours. They're in the business of appealing to our emotions, so the specialize in telling us what we WANT to hear, and never what we NEED to hear. Truth might make people angry, and that could have a negative impact on their bank accounts.

It is not merely a question of "stay in our lane" -- there are enough self-destructive habits and patterns inside the community to hold us back a long time even if all white people everywhere stopped being racist. "Crab in the bucket" syndrome is something we do to ourselves. "The white man's ice is colder" syndrome would exist even if there were other options -- and there are. Until we come to terms with our own pathologies, it is going to be very hard for us collectively to effectively combat the racism that remains. Every problem begins to end when we have dealt with the ones starting us in the mirror; one must gain inward victory before being successful outside. As a community, we are going to have to come to terms with how we hold ourselves back while we simultaneously deal with continuing racism.
