My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of those who have tragically died.

In the wake of the recent death of Dallas Cowboy Jerry Brown in a car accident, why aren’t Jason Whitlock and Bob Costas calling for us to ban cars? Or, since the accident appears to be alcohol related why aren’t they calling for an alcohol ban?

The answer is simple. Because bans like that wouldn’t make sense and neither does the gun control they advocate.

As far as the comment in this article that the radical right went after them, that’s pure political posturing. A lot of ordinary folks thought Whitlock and Costas were being insensitive opportunists for a cause and called them on it. That’s the First Amendment.

There is no clear relationship between gun laws and crime. Among the states with the fewest restrictions on guns is Vermont. It is one of the safest states in the country. The places with the strictest gun laws (Chicago, New York City, California, Massachusetts, DC) have some very high crime rates. The crime rate is a people problem, not a gun problem.

I strongly disagree with the writer above who thinks that someone must be profiting from social unrest and crime. This is a fallacy. It is called the zero sum idea: the notion that if someone has it good, it must be because someone else is being deprived; or the reverse, that if things are bad among one group, another group must be benefitting. This simple-minded assumption rest on an instinctive (but erroneous) belief that somehow all the good and bad in the world somehow balances out to zero. There is no rationale for such a belief, and it makes no sense. Believe it or not, mature people do not like to see others suffer, and get no benefit out of needless pain. The best thing for me as an individual is if everyone around me is happy and prosperous; the worst is if I am surrounded by unhappy, angry people who are sick at heart, or beset by vice.

It is true that there are evil people willing to profit from any situation: the drug dealers, con men, thieves, &c. But even the evil lose in the long run, and sometimes the run is not even so long. Hurting others does not put anyone ahead of the game, really.

It is time that we all exercise humanity to each other, and accept friendship from everyone around us. We all will be better people, and will benefit.

As for handguns, they should be allowed to adults who are qualified by training and a clean record. I am not against reasonable qualifications, meaning training in safety and the law. A clean record is necessary, because the best predictor of behavior is the past behavior of the individual.

A fair and reasonable licensing system for handguns helps society as a whole, for several reasons. It deters crime, because a criminal is then not always sure that he is taking on a helpless victim. Second, it encourages people to avoid criminal ways, which will mean an end to their own gun rights. This is why people who have gone to the trouble to get legal permits seldom commit gun crimes: they are selected in the first place for clean records, and they want to keep their own records clean. That helps even someone who choses not to own a gun. It is a win-win situation for society.
