If we had continued to follow the Garvey plan, I truly believe we would be better off than we are today. I believe this because we would be more independent and self reliant rather than dependent on forces outside our community. The problem with our community is we continue to look and rely on a figure head instead of the plan to lead us and once the figure head is gone, so goes the movement. If we follow a plan that relies on us solving our problems rather than looking for someone outside our community to solve them, we would be a lot better off.

Dear Mr. Clingham,

Thank you for this insightful article that accurately depicts the status of Black America, which resulted from a choice in the 1920s between integration through W. E. B. DuBois & the NAACP's policies and economic self-reliance through Marcus Garvey & the UNIA's practices.

With the removal of Marcus Garvey, a spiritual heir to Booker T. Washington, Black America now finds itself integrated with the right to vote, but without any clear mandate.

It is time to re-examine Marcus Garvey and the UNIA.

But before any re-examination begins, we need to correct a historical injustice against Marcus Garvey.

It is for this reason the Marcus Garvey Celebrations Committee (South Florida), Rootz Foundation, and the Institute for Caribbean Studies have joined together to petition President Barack Obama to exonerate Marcus Garvey.

It is hoped that Garvey's exoneration will accomplish three goals:

1. In the name of justice, initiate the PUBLIC rehabilitation of the good name/character of Marcus Garvey:
2. Honor the legacy hero in the struggle for Black identity
3. Reintroduce Marcus Garvey's ideas of self-reliance, personal responsibility, and success into the body politic.

Here is the link to the petition: http://signon.org/sign/exonerate-marcus-garvey?source=c.url&r_by=4631897

One Love,
