Well said, Terrance — and owing to a provision of the Copyright Law of 1976, Black people CAN start taking control of their music back, next year. No further excuses remain for us to reverse the situation when it comes to our music!

I think one of the key differences between Motown and now is ownership. During and before the Motown era, we owned, which meant we controlled what we produced. Now we’re employees and endorsers, which leaves us at the will of other people, whose only interest is in making as much money as they can off us. They could care less about the values and morals we we’ve given up, all in the name of the almighty dollar. It’s overtime we start to take control of the products and services we use, in order to have the ability to do what’s best for our community, rather than what’s best for other communities.

This is an enlightening Article that diagnosis the symptom but not the problem. Too many black children are from “fatherless” homes. Statistics show an alarming percentage of children from fatherless homes live in poverty, become high school dropouts, are chemically dependent and represent the penal justice system. Until we restore family the black community will not thrive as a group and there will continue to be as 2Pac wrote, the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete.

It is up to us to boycott destructive music by not buying it, by not giving interviews to gangsta rappers, by not showing their videos, etc.

AMEN and thank you… there are a bunch of us out here trying to get and keep the great music of our people’s past (and that which honors that high and nourishing tradition in the present, including some rap music that has not been commercialized and corrupted) into the ears of today’s young people, and you have highlighted the importance of that work.
