As women today are bombarded with reality tv images and portrayals of women in a less than flattering light, it is so refreshing to hear and see Miss Jill Scott glowing and giving us her best
This is an artist who embodies the duality that is woman: soft but strong, mysterious and revealing, sexy yet demure, graceful but can take it to the streets if necessary. Her music transforms and transcends the mundane and profane lyrics and lifestyles projected by many of today’s female artists. I am a strong believer that we should not look to artists and celebrities as role models but with Jill Scott, if I had to look for inspiration from that group, I would definitely set my sights on her. Uncompromising in her beliefs and talents, she has handled record label disputes and industry slights with a natural grace that has made her success even more deserving.
Women artists come under a harsh scrutiny and often fall short of the expectations that the music industry and its fans project upon them. However, Jill Scott is a wonderful example of how never losing sight of your dreams, personal integrity or your talents can both empower and sustain you. You can see the light that is Jill Scott from her beautiful smile to her poignant lyrics. She has a song called “Rolling Hills’ where she sings,
“Maybe you don’t recognize what you got between your eyes; So I’m gonna set you correct so you can get what you should get. It’s that ‘spirit of discernment’ that serves as the light in Jill Scott’s life. It’s that same discernment that this writer admires and aspires most to receive. It’s the guiding light in Jill’s music, her poetry, her life and it’s the light that casts such a beautiful glow on the listener of this beautiful spirit that is Jill Scott.
