Perceiving reality from the perspective of melanin challenged people will get you nowhere. Chocolate City was not a place. It was not even a time. For those of us who actually lived in Washington, D.C. when George Clinton told us about the "White House, but that's a temporary condition too" know Chocolate City is a FEELING. That feeling was not because of the majority population of the city. It was because the people who fled to the "vanilla suburbs" took all the negative energy with them.

Reading this article may make some believe times are hard for people of melanin. In fact that is only a view of the melanin challenged. Right now melanin, the aromatic biopolymer that gives people of melanin their physical appearance is worth over $350 a gram more than gold.

That's not all. Apparently nobody was looking when "Chocolate City" upgraded. Reed even mentions it here. "Chocolate City" is now "Chocolate COUNTY!!!" Having grown up in Washington, DC during the time of Terrance Johnson to see the county where most people of African ancestry would not dare tread be a place where the African American population is the majority is almost mind boggling. The number of those who are affluent also astonishes those who know the history of the area.

Nothing against Denise Rolark Barnes or the Washington Informer, but maybe that whole contracting debacle is an indication the Informer may need to upgrade its appeal to a wider audience. Then there would be no issue with denying the contract.

Washington, D.C. has 301,000 Blacks and PG County has over 500,000. That is over 800,000 black people!!!But let's get one thing straight. Chocolate City never stopped being Chocolate City!!! Washington DC is still 49 percent BLACK!!! Black people are still the largest demographic in Washington D.C. Black people in Washington, DC may be less than 50 percent of the population but no other group of people is higher than 43 percent and that is when the melanin challenged people who call themselves white are counted along with the ones who speak Spanish.

Black people have been the majority population of Washington D.C. since the 1950s and that hasn't changed in over 50 years.

I agree with Terrance. Use the examples provided to us by the Asians and Jews. They focus on building their own to the point of "Greed" and exclusion. I noticed that Asians will come into a Black Community, setup business and hire only themselves.

Where are we!?!? As one Brother noted in another column: we shop at others instead of our own. Here we need to do business in a different way.

It was noted in a survey some time ago that Black America has the economic power of France but they are fragmented. YES WE CAN!! GET TOGETHER!!

Black people have lost their way when it comes to power in this country. We’ve bought into this American dream, which has become a nightmare for a lot of us. We squandered away all the opportunities we fought for in the past 60 – 70 years. All this because we went in the wrong direction when it came to controlling the power that we gained. Instead of consolidating our power by building up our communities all across the country, like what every other group does, we moved away from each other to live by people who really didn’t want us there.

Even to this day we build up other groups communities by spending all our money with them instead of with our own. This is because we don’t really have a community anymore. If we are to build our community again, we have to unite as a people, just like every other group does. Until we do, we will always be taken advantage of because we lack the power that most communities have.

Black Unity means financial independence and happiness
