I trully don't understand, that if we know about all these obstacles mentioned above and below, in our way to being successful in this country, why we continue to rely on these same people for our livelyhood. We are a nation within a nation and all our resources, phycally, mentally and even spiritually, are to the benefit of the same people who enslaved our ancestors. We are not Americans. At least we're not treated like Americans, with the full benefits that most whites receive. Yet they still benefit from our mental and physical labor. There's something wrong with this picture. We must start to do for ourselves if we are to ever survive as a community. This is not progress in my opinion, we are going backwards as a community, and the proof of this is the lack of unity within our community. Just because half of our community is doing well or maybe not since the financial debacle, means we made it. As long as we continue to rely on others for our financial and mental happiness, we will always be in this situation and worse.

I strongly agree with this article. Oprah and Condoleezza Rice learned to read at the age of 3 and look where they are now! I learned how to read since the age of 5 and I finished high school at 16. I could have even finished at 15 if my parents agreed to make me skip another grade. I studied law. As a Black woman I encountered psychological violence and discrimination to prevent me to finish my law degree. I have to admit that I was very upset with the older people in the Black community who didn't prepare me for this kind of hatred and didn't give me the tools to fight back. I had to figure things out by myself. To break this cycle of silence, I shared my experience with younger so-called colored people.
