Mr. Green, interesting and thought provoking article, you ought to write a book about your experiences. That said, what you’re saying is (if I’m understanding you correctly), what people have been saying (and not just about African Americans) for forty years, boys need mentors and strong father figures, we need better schools, etc. We know where we want to be, but we don’t seem to know how to get there, do you have any ideas?

Now, granted, I’m not black, but I’ve worked for and with a great variety of people including several black gentlemen, all ex-military, whom I have thought very highly of. It does seem that the military can provide a good structure and ladder for African Americans to advance, but since that is a self-selected, and pre-selected (via the ASVAB and other screening methods) sample, how can that be translated to the wider community?

I believe that many of our people need a life coach! Many successful African-Americans have four to five mentors and I am talking about adults so, imagine the younger people, how lost they can be without guidance?

Mike these are powerful questions that forces both the young men and the adults in their lives to seriously contemplate. I will definitely add your insights to my own fathering and the work i do with African youth. Much appreciated article.
