He’s addicted to fame and will do anything to maintain it, growing increasingly desperate in middle-age. All he saw was an opportunity to get his mug in front of millions of eyes. Remember Eminem dissed him afterwards by pretending he didn’t know Elton was gay, to make sure the duet wouldn’t be seen as a peace offering. But Elton deserved it.

As a refresher, the original mission of OWN as stated in Discovery’s and Harpo’s press release was to target “women, men and their families with a purpose and a passion to celebrate life, to inspire and entertain, empowering viewers around the world to live their best lives.”

In Oprah’s own words, she intended to launch a cable channel with “mindful” content instead of the “mindless” drivel that dominates today.

It’s amazing how mission statements can change when one is reaching for a rating’s lifeline.
