Fascinating piece, thanks for writing this. My wife is 5’8″, and weighs 272 lbs.
We lock horns frequently, but not how you might think. My concern with her obesity is tied in with her vital signs. I demand that her blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar, glucose level, cholesterol, etc., be tested every six months. My wife is less concerned with this than losing poundage. The only problem is that, while she may go on a diet and lose 19 pounds in two months, within weeks she had gained it back. It’s as if her natural weight is between 270 and 280 pounds. As long as she stays under 280/85, all her signs are within healthy range. When she goes over 285, wham! And, oddly, when she loses weight, her blood pressure and heart rate goes up. Naturally, she is frustrated and full of self-reproach. I want her to be happy and relaxed about her body, but even more important is that she is healthy at whatever weight she is at.

I enjoyed the meat (no pun intended) of this article and the implications of self confidence and self respect. More of our young Black women need to feel confident and have more self respect not matter what size they are.
Teaching at a elementary school and HBCU I see and hear how others talk about
our plus size young ladies. These statements are cruel and inhumane, the very sad part is these statements are coming from their so called friends.
Black on Black hating is demeaning and culturally destuctive, but it happens every day. Personally I love our plus size women, because they do have more self confidence, personal drive to do better in their lives.
I know more Black women with Master degrees and PhD’s that are plus size than the sisters that want to look like a Black barbie.
The truth is we all loose when we hate on each other..

So what you’re saying is that you are entitled to making everything about you once again. This is not a stupid article, this is one that bears discussion. The existence of this one does not negate the importance of the other, what you need to do is write your own damn article and stop making this one about you.

Your response is very humorous and you seem to contradict yourself with your statement. Speaking out when hypocrisy occurs is not an attempt to silence anyone’s voice but to bring awareness of double standards that are being applied. Nobody should be judged only on looks, appearances, social-economic status, size etc. In other words I refuse to “hold my tongue” whenever I see or hear BS, racial bigotry or any stupid comments.

Where are the articles about sistas who pass black men by that appear to be blue collar for what they think is a white collar man. Or the articles on sistas who pass black men who drive a Toyota for a guy that’s leasing a Cadillac. Where’s your article for black women who pass by black man who dresses conservatively but run to a clown wearing bling and looking like a thug.
