Yes, it is quite stressful. And that helps explain why there are so few Black professors in academia. I think much the same is true of other occupations. And the smaller the number of African Americans in a given occupation, the fewer the role models, and therefore the less the incentive for young people coming up to go down those career paths.

I really enjoyed reading it. It felt as I was starting my first class and that all those thoughts were rushing through my head. Being a new teacher on any campus may have some anxieties and I’m sure being a black teaching in a non HBCU might even heighten some of those anxieties.
