I cannot say I am surprised at West. It appears personal; perhaps because he did not receive an invitation to the inauguration. If we remember he began to downplay President Obama - with his good friend Tavis Smiley who was probably the impetus - when he campaigned against Hillary Clinton. Both have disrespected the president even before he was elected. Tavis calling him "that cat" and West agreeing. West' calling the President a "black puppet" is unwarranted. Surely, IF he is an educated man, he can pull from a more educated field in his choice of words. I think he is one who has a personal grudge. He has no experience and has produced NOTHING in leadership of Black people. He spews a venom that is easily recognized. That was one of the reasons freedom from slavery took so long; own fellow slaves on the plantation. But, this is good so that we can CLASSIFY him for what and for who he is. Everybody has a knowledge base. He's exhibiting his; we watch as he stumbles.

"not taking a stand for President Obama in the next election means that the Republicans are going to take over."

Not entirely true. We can all rally around someone else who's going to bring the change that Obama promised. Stop putting out the defeatist ideal like everyone else that oh if Obama fails we have a republican. NO fools, primary him or go 3rd party. We need a 3rd party, Obama has shown that they care about the interest of the richest people in this country.

"we must be sure to take the energy from this debate and translate it into productive activity"

Not voting for Obama and backing a stronger progressive would be a productive thing to do.

I believe that both men have the Community's interest at heart. However, at this juncture, Sharpton's approach is likely to pay more divident than Cornel's. The reason is -and this is my calculation -that Obama cannot do a lot for any particular community, in his first term, given the enormous burden that was left by the previous President; and also the fact that four years are not enough to put policies in to place and see them bear fruits. From a strategy standpoint, Obama is our best chance to get anything significant do in this time for our community; but he has to do it in his second term for fear of being preceived as favoring our community and also wanting to return the favor of slavery. With a wife like Michelle, I believe he is going to come through big for the African American community...so to brother Cornel, I say cool it a bit....
