I can't hold my tongue and I must respond to the following statement made here:

"Secondly, I’ve always believed it to be a mistake for Malcolm to allow his wife and children to be the target of violence coming from those who wanted him to die. It is fully understood that during that era, nearly everyone was under pressure to get married. But the truth is that a soldier on the battlefield has to be careful about who he puts into harm’s way. Some might consider it to be selfish and myopic on the part of both Martin Luther King and Malcolm X to risk the lives of their families (perhaps against their will) and to leave their kids without a father. Their sacrifices are certainly appreciated, but one can easily understand why their wives may have been agitated by their predicament."

Most people involved in the civil rights movement had children. My mother had six daughters when our house was threatened with bombs. What was my reaction as a six year old? For some reason, at that young age, I understood the importance of what my mother was doing. I wasn't afraid to die. If my mother had died, I would have been heartbroken. I had no delusions that we lived in a safe world. My mother, and others like her, were struggling to make it safe. We've got a long way to go.

Another hatchet job. This book is ghetto scholarship at it's finest. Replete with unsubstantiated 3rd hand sources and unnamed sources. This book does nothing to add to the discussion of who Malcolm really was. It is full of rehashed assumptions you find in other books about Malcolm and the NOI.

Manning Marable does the same thing white scholars do, they take an opinion, assumption, or unsubstantiated source and over time it turns to a possibility, then a probability, then a fact.

If you don't know then say you don't know. I'm tired of these ivory tower negroes who benefited from Malcolm and Dr Kings legacy critiquing things in such an unscholarly manner. Lord knows if they ever actually interviewed or asked people who were actually in the movement. This clown actually had the nerve to insinuate people involved in the killing who are still alive and were not involved. Please will you negroes take the Doctors off of your name you are not doctors, you are negros who white people bestowed a title on. A doctor can heal, treat, and improve after his analyzation. You negroes are glorified ghetto reporters and snitches.

The only flaw that the book & your commentary have is that it is opinion based trying to pushed as a probable fact. Instead of making assumptions about what could have happened, focus on what you know did happen. It is not unlikely for a man or woman to remain faithful when a relationship is strained. Either way, speculations about the unknown are taking away from what we do know. He tried to reinvent Malcolm into who he assumed he could've been. Any one of us could've done that in a negative or positive light. Why is it necessary to try to "humanize" one who is already human? Why is it so hard to believe Malcolm was who he said he was? So much so that you'll adopt a 3rd partys estimated account for his life instead of just going with what you know, especially when many of Marables interviews were conducted with enemies of Malcolm. That's not a credible witness. I don't think its a question of believing he's perfect. His autobiography clearly says he wasn't.

I think it's important for Dr Boyce Watkins to not view the life of Malcolm X through the lens of his own insecurities. I find it absolutely astonishing how certain "academics" can boldly hurl accusations against Malcolm X, under the cover of "wanting to discover the true Malcolm". If they really wanted to do that, they should try looking at actual evidence, as opposed to merely trying to mould the image of Malcolm X to suit their own desires, ideas and twisted mentality.

For those interested in reading a more academically worth review of Manning's "Malcolm X", I would suggest that they read the following articles:
