I started working in 1960 at age 8, by assembling bicycle wheels for $0.50 each. On a good day, I'd make $7. From age 8 to 18, I bought my own clothes, saved for a bicycle, and bought my own school lunch. At age 16 I bought $400 car, got a better job, and completed high school. My parents provided housing and medical and the family dinner meal (And there was always home made pasta and tomatos in big pan in the refer for snacks). When I broke my teeth, there was no money to fix them. Went to military, and studied every single night that I was not on duty, completed 32 college credits thru standford, got out of military as E-6 in 4 years, and went to college on the GI Bill. Took me 5-1/2 years to get thru school as I had to work to pay for rent, food, books, medical, and tuition. I was never able to get a scholarship or student loans, as those all went to minorities. Got of of college with a BS (took me 10 years of working to pay for it). Worked for 35 years as an engineer and never have collected one dime of social benefits until retiring at age 62 (now collecting my SS check). When I hear the endless stories about why folks can't do this or that or change their life because someone does not give them money, I realize that the first help they need is to learn to be self reliant and take on the challenge of solving the problem. My read is folks complain to much and expect other people to grant them something. That concept needs to be abandoned, if you won't help yourself, the process of improving wont' start up.

If you realy want to read about the black community and what it will take to fix it, what is wrong with it since slavery, the difficulty blacks have with interacting with each other in intimate realtionships and so so much more, everyone should read the book, I Am Not A Slave by a Eugene LaCorbiniere. Its the best read of the year. It goes into exact detail of the problems of the black community.

Please, people kill me
always saying stuff is Free
where my student Loan bill is over 50,000
I don't qualify for most scholarships

The education system is so screwed up and yes i blames them
for screwing up My education.
Why is it that, i finish over 2 years of College
all of a Sudden some bull crap take place and i have to pay
10 thousand or more just to get back to School
to finish what i started.

Why do people have to sell their souls to make it Big
in the music industry.

I will not waste my breathe and time on this
but you get where i'm coming From

There's many other Black Women who wasn't able to finish school because lack of funds and the system build you up to tear you down. We don't have parents who are willing to co-sign on Loans and take time out to help us. The Financial Aide system, either wont answer the phone or return messages

People always want you to work for free and when you leave them hanging
all of a sudden they have to find a way to encourage you.

Then people act like you Lazy but want you to kiss azz for a Job
Then talk more crap if you decide to get a check.

Life moves forward.

One BIG problem in the black community is that many do not take advantage of the FREE education/opportunities that is available to us.

This is one of the reasons Hispanics and other minorities are moving ahead of us in this country.Others come here and take advantage of the educational opportunities for themselves and their children. They work darn hard, and will do the low paying jobs to get ahead. They live several families under one roof until each does better and moves on.

We can complain all we want, but until we are a more educated people we will never get ahead, and others will continue to move past us. Decade after decade many of us are still in the same position, and crying about what someone did to us, but of course not doing anything for self!

Unfortunatly, the "opportunity" that many black folk buy into is simply waiting for a check each month, along with a medical card and food stamps!
Apparently, this type of hand-out is all that many seem to want or need. Of course when these types of "programs" are cut black folk are crying the blues because this is their life line.

We have to stop placing blame on what happened years ago. We need to acknowledge that history, but continue to build ourselves up through education, and hard work. You can't continue to do the same things you have done in the past and expect a different outcome.

By now, most should realize that the government is not going to give you your 40 acres and a mule! Get it for yourself!

Black folk WAKE UP!
