(ThyBlackMan.com) The 2018 iPhones including the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR were the major attractions at Apple’s September event. CEO Tim Cook took to the stage and revealed the iPhone XS – “the most advanced iPhone Apple has ever created.” We also got to see the iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR during the event. Here’s everything you need to know about these 2018 iPhones.
The iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max
The back and edges of the phones are made of a surgical grade stainless steel and the front features an edge-to-edge glass display which is the most durable glass in a smartphone, claims Apple. The iPhone XS is available in three colors Gold, Space Gray, and Silver, and is certified with the IP68 rating, which means it can be submerged into 2 meters of water for 30 minutes. The company has also tested the phone for different liquids tests, but we do not recommend you to do so. The iPhone X can easily tackle normal spills, but don’t expect too much.
The iPhone XS features a 5.8-inch OLED display for which Apple’s marketing term is ‘Super Retina’. The pixel density of the iPhone XS display is 458ppi which is the same as the original iPhone X’s. The display resolution on this big screen is 1125 x 2436 pixels and is also the same as the original iPhone X. You can play HDR movies with Dolby vision HDR 10 support.
One of the most interesting improvements in the iPhone XS is its camera quality. The HDR images produced by the phone have 60 percent higher dynamic range than the original iPhone X. The bigger phone, the iPhone XS Max features a 6.5-inch Super Retina display. The biggest display on an iPhone features 1242 x 2688 resolution with 458ppi and 3.3 million pixels.
Both the phones feature 3D touch, Face ID, tap to wake, True Tone display, and dual speakers. As expected, the 2018 iPhones are powered by a 7nm A12 Bionic chip. Apple uses a 6-core CPU and a 4-core GPU on the iPhone XS and XS Max. With this approach, Apple has reduced power consumption with the new technology and (up to 40 percent faster) and you can expect these smartphones to perform 15 percent faster with the new core architecture. Other than the 2 performance cores, the 4 cores are designed for power efficiency and reduce power consumption to 50 percent. The best thing is all the six cores can run at once giving more power to the user.
On the A12 Bionic chip, the 4-core GPU performs 50 percent faster than the A11 chip. Last year with the A11 Bionic, Apple introduced a dual-core neural engine, but this time, they have increased the number of cores to eight which means you can expect better machine learning from the 2018 iPhones as there’s a dedicated machine learning engine available on the A12 Bionic chip.
If we compare the A11 and A12 Bionic chips, the former can process 600 billion operations per second, and the latter is capable of handling 5 trillion neural engine operations per second which is a massive step up. The iPhones now support up to 512GB storage capacity.
The camera system on the new iPhones features dual camera support for two 12MP lenses. The one is a wide-angle camera and the other one is a telephoto camera supported by Apple’s true tone flash. On the front side, there are two cameras. One is a 7MP RGB camera and the second one is an IR camera. Apple also introduced a new camera feature called Smart HDR. What this new feature does is it can capture photos with zero shutter lag.
The battery on the iPhone XS can last for an hour and a half, more than the original iPhone X. The phone also supports dual sim. Users can keep two numbers and two different plans on their iPhone. The iPhone XS starts from $999 and the iPhone XS Max is available for $1099.
The iPhone XR
The iPhone XR comes with an LCD display and is designed with aluminium and glass back. The iPhone XR features a 6.1-inch edge-to-edge Liquid Retina display. The LCD display offers 828 x 1792 resolution with 326ppi. This smartphone also runs on the A12 Bionic chip. It features a single camera system on the back that sports a 12MP shooter.
The front camera technology is the same Apple uses on the other 2018 iPhones. The iPhone XR’s battery can last for one and half hour more than the battery of the iPhone 8 Plus. The phone comes in six colors white, black, blue, coral, yellow, and red. The iPhone XR starts at $999.
All the other features on the iPhone XR are the same as the other new iPhones including the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max. The 2018 iPhones are now available for pre-order.
