(ThyBlackMan.comIf you don’t love what you do then you are going to end up hating a massive portion of your life. We work for more than a third of our total time on this earth, and so many people spend that time doing something that they don’t like, that makes them stressed and is completely the wrong thing for them. Think about when you were a child and the dreams you had – too many people never make it to their dreams. Of course those dreams of being a dragon or a fairy princess aren’t always going to be the easiest to reach, but hey! Meghan Markle is all set to become a princess, so why not?

A career should be fun and rewarding and should contain a level of excitement. That doesn’t mean that everyone needs to be a skydiving instructor, but you do need to find something about the work you do that makes you feel eager to go back tomorrow, and not just because it pays the bills. Excitement at doesn’t have to be one of those heart stopping moments every single day – not everyone is built for that, but just a thrill when something happens that makes all the bad bits of the job worth it. Because every job has bad parts – but the key to it all is that you love everything else so much that the not so great bits don’t matter so much any more.

Doctor

What can be more rewarding than saving lives on a daily basis? This role is a hard one and takes a tonne of training to succeed in – and it doesn’t end when you graduate from medical school. Being any sort of medical or health care professional is a role that you have to throw yourself into and love every aspect. You can’t be a doctor if only half of you is invested in it. Before you can even attend medical school, you need to be able to pass the MCAT, and If you don’t have the passion, it will be very difficult. Make sure you are ready for this by taking some online MCAT prep courses. If you are eyeing medical school in Australia and the United Kingdom, take GAMSAT prep courses. It’s a lot of long hours studying and long hours working, but have you ever heard a doctor say that they regret the route they have taken? For every person you can’t help, there a fifty more that you can.

Pilot

Why not see the world for a living? Granted you’ll mostly see the world’s airports, but you do get the odd change to stay over in different countries and see some of the world’s amazing cultures. Ideally you need to attend one of the top aerospace universities – you can’t just stroll up to a plane and practice, unlike Phoebe Buffett would have us believe. Whether you’re flying commercially, privately, teaching it, or fighting a war with it, flying is an amazing experience and one that only a few get to do as a living.

Doula

A doula isn’t a role everyone is familiar with, it’s basically a professional birth partner. They are trained in the basics of delivery and labour and are there to help someone become a mommy. How amazing would that role be? You literally get to help bring life into the world. You can take it a step further and train as a midwife and deliver babies all day every day.

Midwife

A midwife has one of the best jobs out there – but it does come with a lot of responsibility, and the very least they have two lives on their hands at one time. But they also get to bring life into the world. Just like being a doctor, you never stop learning in this role, and you have to go through some intensive training to get to the point where you can deal with everything. But you’re speciality is birth, and where there are still many things that we don’t know about the miracle of birth, a midwife knows more about it than anyone else; it’s their whole world and their whole job. And they are incredibly lucky to do it.

Youth worker

Working with disadvantaged children, with kids who have been abused or abandoned, or with kids in the foster system, will never not be a rewarding job. These children need help, love and stability, and you can be the one to give them that. ‘Youth worker’ covers everything from volunteering to a social worker, there are so many levels and different routes that you can take in youth work where you can help different groups of kids in different ways and still have an amazing impact on their lives.

Guide dog trainer

Training puppies to help the blind- need we say more? Well… yes, but just to explain a bit more. A guide dog trainer is predominantly a volunteer role and is a full on one. You always need to keep the end goal in mind or you will end up with 100 dogs in your home. You initiate the training of the puppy through until they are a year or eighteen months old. You take them to classes and work through daily training – which includes visiting hospitals, restaurants, offices – any environment they might have to deal with when they find their forever home.

Vet

Veterinarians are amazing – they know as much as a doctor and don’t even have their patients (who come in hundreds of different anatomical structures) telling them what hurts or didn’t feel right. They work off behaviour and But feelings and work absolute wonders – some of which are creeping into human medicine thanks to vets like Dr Fitzpatrick, also known as the bionic vet, who has invented countless surgical practices and hundreds of implants that vastly improve the quality of life for an amputated animal. There are even elephants out their sporting fake legs, allowing them to live an almost normal life in a sanctuary after whatever horrific event cost them their limb in the first place.
