(ThyBlackMan.com) New phones that fall in a particular series take baby-step improvements. In the Android realm, this year remained focused on certain factors: Snapdragon 835 chipset, 4 to 8GB RAM, bezel-less design, dual camera setup, and glass and ceramic build. Manufacturers bring one or two game-changing features to keep the smartphones feeling unique and fresh. With the Xiaomi MI Mix 2, the company continues to play it safe by bringing new changes while keeping the core experience the same.

The Chinese company brought the “Concept Phone” named Mi Mix, the original phone from the series. Unfortunately, the idea of concept phone didn’t go well and the overall design of the phone was not successful as it didn’t make the phone practically usable. At least not for everyone. The Mi Mix 2 is a big leap forward in terms of design and with that, the company is making sure that everyone would want to love it for many reasons.

The biggest change in the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is the display size. The original phone sports a 6.4-inch display with 83.6% screen-to-body ratio, but its successor, the Mi Mix 2 is very different. The new phone has a 5.99-inch display with 80.8% screen-to-body ratio and better resolution and display quality. With the new design changes, the Mi Mix 2 appears to be more appealing than its predecessor. The Mix 2 features very thin bezels on the three sides, while the chin is also shrunk. It’s an ideal smartphone for multimedia consumption – neither too big nor very small.

Just like its predecessor’s camera setup, the front-facing camera in the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is also integrated into the bottom. This is a kind of compromise you need to make because those who never used such camera setup will feel the inconvenience of holding the phone upside down to take selfies. It appears to be very awkward when you are using applications like Duo or Skype for video chat.

The good thing about the rear camera is that it comes from the Mi 6 and not from the original Mi Mix. It is not a very solid boost, but still, you’ll feel the difference. For the original Mi Mix, the camera turned out to be the biggest disappointment for many users. Fortunately, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 users wouldn’t be dealing with the same camera. The new phone has a 12-megapixel sensor with a single f/2.0 lens. Xiaomi hasn’t joined the dual-camera bandwagon with this phone.

The Mi Mix 2 is a well-thought-out smartphone and it looks far better than the mobile phones like OP5. The company is also offering a special edition phone that comes with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage capacity. There a 3400mAh battery that lasts for a day and sometimes more depending on how you use your phone. The good thing is that the phone supports Quick Charge 3.0, meaning that recharging the battery is fast.

The Mi Mix 2 runs the MIUI 9, which is the latest version of the company’s custom interface for Mi devices. The device runs Android 7.1.2 Nougat. The MIUI 9 is still buggy and the company will most likely release updates for the same.

For now, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is available only in some markets, but the phone supports 42 LTE bands and will also be available in many regions around the world. The fact that the phone will work with almost every carrier around the world makes it a great choice for those who want a powerful phone without spending more than US$600. The after-sales support can be a problem for people living in places where the company doesn’t offer service support, but if you are in the service area, this phone can be a great alternative to other expensive phones with same hardware available in the market.
