(ThyBlackMan.comDear Corporate Democrats,

Let this article serve as warning. Let this shot across your bow serve as a notice that your ship is about to sink and that you would be wise to jump off now rather than to go down with your corporately financed yacht. You can no longer threaten us with the worst case scenario in the era of Donald Trump. The worst has already happened. You can no longer hold that red gun with your blue hand to our black heads. Pull the trigger, if you will.

We, the Progressives, are not suicidal. We are not racists and we are not sexists. We support Nina Turner, Tulsi Gabbard, and a whole host of Progressive Democratic women of all skin tones. It would behoove you to drop the blatantly formulated attacks that you have launched in your effort to shape public perception of Progressives as middle-aged tantrum having white boys. That strategy didn’t work for you last November, It won’t work for you next November, and it won’t work for you in November of 2020 either. Allow me to explain why.

We are civic minded Americans who understand that the corporate wing of the Democratic is fundamentally failing and is fighting to maintain its status quo and fatal flaw. The Democratic Party establishment as lead by Bill and Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and now apparently Kamala Harris, brags about its fundraising prowess to a group of Progressives who ultimately view that very fundraising as the fundamental problem with our democracy. It is the problem which must be solved before all others can truly be addressed earnestly.

It is our desire to remove corporate influence from every strata of our government, thereby removing their ability to poison our water, pollute our air, miseducate our children, usurp our finances, and deny our affirmative healthcare. We only desire a government of the people, for the people, and by the people. We do not wish to substitute the people with the corporations. We understand that the American people have absolutely no ability to influence the policy of this nation, especially in this post-Citizens United world. We understand that only publicly financed campaigns will return the government back to the people and will compel our elected representatives to represent our best interests and not the best interests of their donors.

Barack Obama failed to decline political action committee (PAC) money leading up to his 2012 campaign. Citizens United was decided by the SCOTUS under his watch and he should have been able to interpret the downstream impacts of that decision. His reelection campaign failed to understand that they would have been able to utilize the refusal to take corporate PAC money as a virtue and they missed a golden opportunity to set the Democratic Party on to a winning course against the GOP. Instead, they played the game. They failed to have the vision and the bravery that it would take to understand that they could have easily used that refusal of PAC money as a motivator for crowd sourcing. They failed to return the government to its rightful owners.

So here we are five years later and Donald Trump is President. As we breathe, the gains of the Civil Rights Movement are being rolled back and black children in Flint, Michigan are being poisoned by their own drinking water. As we breathe, the War on Drugs is being ramped back up and black families are poised to be torn apart by urban assault. As we breathe, we are living under the threat of global thermonuclear holocaust because their strategy of trying to beat the GOP at its own game is an utter failure. These conditions have arrived despite the corporate Democrats playing ball.

The people who play ball with the post-Citizens United legacy of corporatism cannot be trusted to keep their promises. We remember that the public option was never proposed in a serious manner. We remember what happened to the single-payer bill in California last month. We remember that Kamala Harris took a contribution from Donald Trump’s Treasury Secretary and apparently looked the other way when she was directed to prosecute him. We do not have short memories. This is not a matter of purity, but a matter of political will. We know that your will is only to be elected and then to serve your real employers; your donors.

We understand that the moneyed interests of the Democratic Party’s donors will always come before ours because they are the ones who finance your power. This is the paradigm that must change and you show absolutely no willingness to change. In fact, you double down. You brag about your fundraising prowess as if it is not the very slap in the face that we wish to cease. Simply put, you are not allowing us the simple power to choose our own representatives. In fact, you are acting as a council. You are acting as overlords whom with their money get to tell us who to vote for and you’re doing it three years away from the next general election. Our lack of power is rather obvious and downright painful to us.

The fundamental question that needs to be asked is this: Why would anyone donate billions of dollars to a political campaign? They do it for a return on their investment. Your donor groups, PACs, and SuperPACs are nothing more than shadow governments who get to determine your policy before you ever step foot into your office. You know it, we know it, and Steve Mnuchin definitely knows it. We cannot self-govern this way. It is oligarchy. It is quite literally one of the pillars of fascism which sets the table for a man like the current President to come to power. On July 4, 1776, the United States of America declared to the British monarchy that it would not live under such tyranny and 241 years later, the Progressives of that very same nation are declaring the very same thing to its evolved bicameral oligarchy. We demand our power back and we will have it. An America with such income inequality and outright corruption is not an America that we can continue to live with and we will allow it to crumble if that’s what it will take to return the power to the people. You can call us purists, you can call us racists and sexists; but what we are, are patriots.

Yours truly,

The Progressive Left
