All I do is win, win, win no matter what
Got money on my mind, I can never get enough
And every time I step up in the building
Everybody hands go up
And they stay there, and they say yeah
And they stay there, up, down, up, down, up, down
Cause all I do is win, win, win…

Donald Trump should make All I Do Is Win his official theme song. President #TwitterFingers is winning! He wins when he wins; He wins when he ties; He wins when he loses. It’s time to admit that we are playing his game by his rules.

Don’t be confused by the “Make America Great Again” rhetoric; this isn’t a team sport. Donald’s wins are his alone. None of his victories are likely to trickle down to his constituency, and they don’t seem to mind. Many of his supporters are comfortable vicariously winning through him. This is what many on the left- and in the media- fail to realize.

Halfway through his first year in office Donald Trump hasn’t allowed 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue to change him. There were prognosticators who thought the weight of the office would humble him: they were wrong. Donald is governing the same way he campaigned. The only people surprised by this are those in denial of how banal everyday politics is to his base. They didn’t send him to Washington to be bogged down with technocratic idiosyncrasies. Donald was sent to “shake things up” and “drain the swamp”. The fact that nothing is working the way it should is a political accomplishment and another win.

Donald Trump famously said, “I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters”. This statement is reaffirmed with every new “controversy” he finds himself at the center of. Trump’s most loyal supporters don’t care about Russia investigations. They don’t care about Twitter attacks. They don’t care how much golf he plays. They don’t even care about his Medicare, Medicaid, or social Security lies. They don’t care that the office of the presidency is being “diminished”; for many of them, that happened with the election of Barack Obama.

In the last six months, some really smart people have wasted a lot of time and energy crafting persuasive arguments about the abnormal nature of this administration. I hope they were compensated for their efforts. Making an argument in which all of the rhetorical devices are strong, the syllogisms are based in solid logic, and the analogies are easy to understand is worthless if the people they are directed towards aren’t invested in challenging their beliefs. Trying to convince 2nd graders wrestling is fake would have been a better use of that time and energy.

Working-class white voters will be adversely affected by Trumpcare when it eventually passes, his tax cuts when they are enacted, and the continued dismantling of the social safety net. News flash: they don’t care! The economic pain many Americans are living through is a direct result of 40 years’ worth of working -class white voters giving political power to candidates who’ve made getting access to healthcare harder and dismantling unions easier. In a post-fact America, this fact matters less now than it did during the Bush years.

Donald Trump may have pulled off the greatest political magic trick in American history. Not only did he get elected running the most toxic campaign in modern history, but he’s governed with the same lack of regard for decency. His coalition of Evangelicals, Rustbelt conservatives, and moderate republicans are his accomplices. They’ve chosen to suspend their principles in order to defend his behavior. The same Trump supporters who required perfection from President Obama have adjusted their Judeo-Christian values to accept Donald Trump’s many character flaws. None of this makes sense, but who believed it would?
