Three Necessary Attitudes for Trump-Proofing your Dreams.

(ThyBlackMan.com) Recently, on the heels of the most unanticipated political outcomes in American history, I had a brief conversation with a stranger. I asked, “What’s your number one goal for the New Year?” With her head bowed, she cumbered, “I have no goals”. Naturally, my coaching instinct kicked in as I quizzed her on why she had no goals for the New Year. She replied with three words: Because of Trump.

Certainly, this woman was not alone in her general malaise about our incoming president. Much of America – perhaps sixty-three percent – are feeling anxious and uneasy about the direction this administration will shepherd our country. That the future of our great country is in flux is an understatement.

Anxiety aside though, your dreams still matter! It becomes ours to recognize that people in far worse shape than us were able to sustain their dreams and aspirations and become what they were destined to be. Regardless of who occupies the White House, you remain the chief builder of your house! Here, then, are three necessary attitudes for Trump-Proofing your dreams.

Keep Your Eyes on the Big Picture

An old Negro spiritual says, Life if filled with swift transition, naught of earth unmoved can stand. Build your dreams on things eternal. Hold to God’s unchanging hand. Dreams are like puzzles; if you keep your eyes on the big picture, you will more readily assemble the pieces. The same holds true in this context; no matter who occupies the White House, you can build your dreams with reckless abandon and an unwavering confidence. Always hold to the belief that something bigger is at work – whether it is the community you are building, the business you wish to launch, the cause you contribute to – that what you do is inextricably woven into a larger narrative.

Not only that, if your dream comes from a pure heart and your intention is clean and you seek positive results, then you are an imperative part of that ‘something bigger’.

Don’t Be Afraid to Restrategize

The venerable Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense. That’s the spirit you need in the face of change and challenge – to get up and charge into the new day with vigor and enthusiasm – no matter what obstacles have been placed in your path. Do not be afraid to set the sails in a new direction. Regardless of policies which emanate from a government, you are the captain of your destiny – it was given to you by the Creator at your birth! Redo the business plan. Take a second look at your demographic. Focus on a new area seldom tapped by the competition. Unveil a new product or service. Nothing can conquer you but your attitude!

Dream Big. Act Even Bigger

Do you know what the number one killer of dreams is? It’s not lack of capital; it’s rarely lack of investors and it is surely not the lack of a well-grounded strategy. All of these elements are important. But the number one killer of dreams for the average person is the lack of belief. Most people simply do not believe they can do what they imagine doing. When you believe in your dream, you become invincible; what you once thought to be impossible becomes possible. “It’s possible”, are the two words Les Brown advises as the mental and spiritual framework for making our dreams come true. When those two words seep into your subconscious, your actions become even bigger than your dreams. You become like that little locomotive from child lore, “I think I can. I know I can. I did it!”

Nevermind who’s in the White House – keep building your dreams!
