(ThyBlackMan.com) are some mistakes you can make to show that you’re old-fashioned, and there are other mistakes that might cost your organization a hundred million dollars.  Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling was recorded on the phone telling his girlfriend to not associate with black people, at least not in public.  This was one of those expensive mistakes.

According to TMZ, the owner feels that being around black people deflates the value of your brand.

Yeah, it bothers me a lot that you want to promo… broadcast that you’re associating with black people,” he said to his girlfriend.

The owner said that he doesn’t hate minorities, and that his girlfriend can do what she wants with them in public.  But he then says on audio that he doesn’t want his girlfriend to publicize her friendships with them.

The statements came after the woman posed on Instagram in a picture with Magic Johnson.

Here are a few more jewels from Mr. Donald Sterling’s conversation:

– “It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to?”

– “You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want.  The little I ask you is not to promote it on that … and not to bring them to my games.”

– ”I’m just saying, in your lousy f*cking Instagrams, you don’t have to have yourself with, walking with black people.”

– “…Don’t put him [Magic] on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me.  And don’t bring him to my games.”

It’s interesting that Donald Sterling’s remarks were revealed the day after someone sent me a video with the rapper Chamillionaire stating that Michael Jordan told him that he doesn’t take pictures with black people.   I won’t talk much about Jordan (his actions speak louder than words – he has hardly done a thing for black people except take our money), but what I’ll say is that there are quite a few people in corporate America whoDonaldSterling-2014 see the black community as “Financial mistresses” – They expect the mistress to give them everything, but don’t feel compelled to give anything back.

Part of the reason that a man gets away with exploiting a mistress is low self-esteem.  She may not expect anything in return for her “services,” and is Ok with being a second-class citizen.  African Americans are the most prolific consumers in America, spending our money down to the final penny:  We have saved entire corporations from economic disaster, kept the Oprah Winfrey Network from going under, and single-handedly taught Nike how to sell the same damn shoe every year to people who can barely pay their rent.

But while we are fiercely loyal at giving our money away (much to our demise), we are not entirely savvy about expecting something in return.   I get tremendous pushback when I argue that those who’ve earned millions from the black community (i.e. millionaire hip-hop artists or major corporations) should be expected to give something back.  I posit that low self-esteem makes many of us content with being financial mistresses.  A man will take everything from his mistress, and even appreciate her presence.  But he doesn’t want to be seen in public  with her and always considers her to be secondary to the people he really loves the most.

The bottom line is this:  Donald Sterling must be made to pay for his feelings toward African Americans.  No conscientious person should watch a Clippers game or attend one.  Of course we also shouldn’t purchase any Clippers jerseys or other products, for every dollar spent is putting a dollar into the hands of a man who doesn’t respect us.  Even if the ownership structure changes, our attitudes should not change.  If Sterling feels that the African American “brand” deflates his own, then we should show him what a deflated brand really looks like.

Also, I’m curious to see how the NBA itself responds to these revelations.  African American athletes contribute billions to the NBA and NCAA through their talent and labor, and it would be nothing short of revolutionary to have a prominent athlete use his platform to speak on this issue.  Small moments of strength are what have historically transformed America into a better nation over time.  This is NOT the time to be silent.

Finally, we must realize that Sterling just happened to be the guy who was caught on tape saying what quite a few organizational heads are saying behind closed doors.  He is not alone in his bigotry and I’m sure he’s made these remarks around many of his friends, and his friends either overlooked his comments or nodded their heads in agreement.  This is how money is used to purchase our integrity, and this is what makes us weak.

Black people are still in a battle for our humanity.  There are many people in America who still see us as running, jumping, rapping, apes who are better off in a prison cell.  There’s really no way around this reality.

So he told his black girlfriend to not bring black people to games, and she blackmailed him with an intentional recording. She obviously egged him on.

    She deserves jail.

  2. toomanygrandkids says:

How do you contribute money to the NAACP and talk garbage on black people? Well, he won’t be receiving that award. I’d say that’s a plus. It’s been reported that his wife is suing him for embezzelment. Wonder what that’s about. He was probably stealing from her to supply his girlfriend/mistress all those gifts.

The best thing that could happen is that somebody else buys this team. I don’t believe those players are going anywhere.

  3. hush says:

It appears that this man was also set up. What he said pails in comparison to what we say everyday about ourselves.

  4. ROBERT says:

IT turns out that we can learn a few lessons from this story because apparently MR STERLING wasn’t speaking as a white man but as a JEW.

THIS fact will be looked over in AMERICAN media but in ISRAEL these things are highlighted.

THIS also effects us because this man was a donor to the NAACP and was about to receive a award from them.

IT;S also important to know because JEWS have replaced white AMERICA as the rulers of this land and we need to know just what they think of us.

PLEASE read the article from ISRAELS view and look at the video.

This is much to do about nothing. So what this Jewish guy doesn’t want to be associated with blacks.

  6. ROBERT says:

LET’S be realistic people and think ; how does this effect our lives; this is just a racist NBA owner.

THE media loves these stories because it diverts your attention to real issues concerning our community.

YOU will also notice the sudden appearance of so- called black leadership during incidents acting as though this is a major crisis for the black community.

PEOPLE we’ve been seeing this trick for thirty years now; let’s quit falling for this ; the only reason our so- called leaders exist is to lead us into these senseless issues.

THE only way to deal with people like STERLING is to do what MAGIC JOHNSON suggested and never go to a CLIPPERS game again!

  7. Realman2 says:

The big problem is that these Ignorant black million dollar slaves aint going to do a damn thing. It’s like this everywhere, I remember Major League Baseball owner Marge Schot said a lot of racist things about black ball players. Negroes did nothing then and aint going to do anything now except shuck and jive in these bigots faces.

  8. toomanygrandkids says:

Old white dudes like this are pathetic and the masters of having many faces. And according to reports, this isn’t the first racial incident. Supposedly, he made these recent remarks to his mistress. If that’s her in the picture above, she looks bi-racial. I’m sure she has black relatives. So for him to have bi-racial/mixed/non-white mistress goes to show how confused this sugar daddy is.

You can easily tell that she’s with him for his money. He’s definitely not an old handsome white man, that’s for sure.

The LA Clippers should now realize what type of owner they play for. I can’t wait to see how the NBA handles this situation.

  9. jdgwisd says:

The comedian Paul Moody succinctly identified the roles of NBA ownership and players in a joke years ago: “Look at my ni…… jumping. Jump, jump, white daddy makes you jump jump, awww jump.”. This issue will will fall victim to the 21 day African american axiom: For a few days there will be sound and fury, but nothing substanative will come from this issue.

  10. just allah says:

to those black folks that always go around hootin and hollerin how they got a direct line with god, but still are the only people in this country that get shafted in the ass in every way by others, let this be another so called “moment” for you. that u get upset about, and then go back to the daily business if playin in a system that plays u in every way everyday. PS don’t expect al sharpton or jesse jackson to call for a boycott because they won’t, they my threaten one, but will never call outright for one, because jesse jackson comes from the t.m.r. howard school of civil rights, and al sharpton being a prodigy of jesse jackson just continues the tradition, and the tradition is to play on ur hurt and anger and make a back room deal that has nothing of benefit for you what so ever.

Why for the love of Christ, do people react so emotionally to something that goes on behind closed doors all of the time? Talking about waiting for the NBA association to investigate before action can be taken is as crazy as wanting Hoover to stop cross dressing back in his heyday. Mr. Sterling is just one example of elitist bigots that exists in our modern day society. Racism is not dead and has not gone away whatsoever. The cover story on this is that he is being blackmailed by an ex, thus the tape being sold to TMZ. Whatever was said on the tape is real and was meant with a vengence.

Magic should not only go to the game, but sit on the bench with the Clipper team as a sign of non violent protest and to serve as an example of not letting words of nonsense get to him. He did nothing wrong in having a photo taken and to just give in to the request is cowardly. The team has more important issues awaiting them for the moment and will have to deal with this later rather than sooner. Our quest as a race to be accepted equally is not ever going to be a reality as long as people like Mr. Sterling can say one thing in public and do another behind the scenes. He should be given the podium with the other racist bastard that was fighting the government over land being used by his cattle. Somehow, he went from grazing rights to civil rights asking why N’s could not be happy picking cotton versus being subsidized by the government.

All of our lives have been filled with ignorant actions and comments such as these that do not promote anything positive whatsoever. The right to free speech is cool as long as no lines are crossed to incite negativity. Fox news turned this fool from hero to goat soon after and tried in vain to distance themselves from their initial support platform after the racial comments aired. As Johnny Mathis would say, too much too little too late. Back in the day a comment aimed at a white individual would have resulted in a lynching, beating, and any other degrading treatment that could be inflicted. But these guys and gals seem to be able to voice their opinions without any corrective action being taken, much less a sincere apology or repenting from making errors in judgment. Meanwhile, we are still singing we shall overcome and hoping that the LORD will take care of things.

Good grief world what are we becoming by being tolerant of all of this BS. Excuse me while I lower my blood pressure by venting because I for one am not going to hold back speaking the truth about these bigots. They exist in every venue of life we have and pull most of the strings to make things happen in the corporate world as we know it. It is time to grow up and let the world see that we are not only are equal, but have been somewhat superior since the beginning of mankind if our true contributions to the world would be known properly. We have allowed our true identifies to be stolen and replaced by descriptions of being inhumane.

Not true, as we are the most tolerant and forgiving race of people on the planet. We do not die as we multiply and will forever be a force to be dealt with on a fair basis. Treat us how you want to be treated and most folk would be surprised to learn that this was all we asked for in the first place. Peace out, Papacool.
