(ThyBlackMan.com) We’ve heard more than once that money talks and BS walks. Well this obvious means nothing to the Internal Revenue Service. Lauryn Hill the singer, song-writer, rapper, producer and actress was on the IRS’ radar and she was tagged and hit.
Lauryn Hill is well known for her solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Since the break up of The Fugee’s, Lauryn Hill dropped out of the entertainment world and public eye for a while. Her last recording MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 received both raved reviews and harsh criticism. Hill has been sporadic in the public eye and with her music. It seems that she no longer sings songs of love, but rallying cries of injustice, racism and female empowerment. Hill has even ranted against the very music industry she was once a part of.
Lauryn Hill has occasionally performed at music festivals and even there her audience displayed dissatisfaction because of her erratic performances and behavior. Not only has Lauryn’s professional life appeared to be a little off balance her love life seems to have issues of its own also.
Hill’s tumultuous romantic relationship with fellow group member, Wyclef Jean led to the band’s spilt up in 1997 to focus on solo projects. Lauryn Hill went on to have five children with Rohan Marley, the son of reggae legend Bob Marley. Sadly, the sixth child’s birth was somewhat a controversial one. Rohan Marley the father of Lauryn’s other five children denied fathering the last child. To this date the father is unknown.
And now to add insult to injury, Lauryn Hill has pleaded guilty to tax evasion for failure to pay federal income taxes. Hill, a member of the former group The Fugees is no longer singing love songs, but tunes of a jail bird. July of this year Hill began serving a three-month prison sentence.
On May 6, 2013, Lauryn Hill was sentenced by Judge Arleo to serve three months in prison and will face three months house arrest afterwards as part of a year of supervised probation. She had faced a possible sentence of as long as 36 months. However, the courts took into account her lack of a prior criminal record and her six minor-aged children.
By this point Lauryn Hill has fully paid back $970,000 in back taxes and penalties she owes. In the courtroom, Hill said that she had lived “very modestly” considering how much money she had made for others, and that “I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them. I had an economic system imposed on me.” Hill reported to the minimum-security Federal Correctional Institution, Danbury on July 8, 2013, to begin serving her sentence.
Let’s hope regardless of her ancestral linage that Lauryn Hill makes the right decision in following the law of the land next tax season.
