(ThyBlackMan.com) National Teacher’s Week was over two months ago, but what I have written below is not any less relevant.

Dear Parents,

Please know that we understand that you have the day-to-day responsibilities of being a parent to your child, but all I would like to offer is a simple request for you to consider that we, as teachers, in actuality do care for your child. I cannot speak for the teachers who are in it for the paycheck or for those who have inappropriate relationships, but I can speak for the group of teachers who sincerely care and want the best for your child.

With the laundry lists of requests parents have for teachers, I would like to offer a few:

Please take an active interest, instead of pointing the finger. There are actual teachers who care and endure the politics and red tape year after yearTeacher discussing book with class because they care so much for your child. Many parents are quick to say what teachers are not doing x, y, and z, but I ask: What are you doing as a parent to help your child progress in school? I do not know how many parent phone calls I have made to inform a parent about his/her failing student and I am met with: Why was not I told sooner or what do you want to me to about it? These posed questions, in spite of the available ways for parents to receive grade updates and even attendance updates, are unacceptable. I understand our climate in today’s world has changed but what has happened to homework being a priority each night before television, phone, and internet. I had to sit at our kitchen table every day, before I could do anything social related.

At what point are we going to work together to ensure student success. I am not a baby sitter. I am a teacher. It is not my responsibility to teach child manners. I am supposed to reiterate what has been taught.

Before pointing fingers at the school, ask yourself if you are doing your all to be informed.

Our children are paying the cost.

At what point do we stop wearing out our good teachers and losing them? If our children are the future, then what good is our future if they aren’t getting the fundamentals at home that will help them to be successful in the classroom and in life?

Sincerely,

A Concerned Teacher
